I wrote something.

tl;dr nobody in the anime community is a critic

but maybe they should start being critics

When you aren't directly connected to the creation of the artform and the community is hostile toward the role, attempting to take the role of the critic in the anime medium seems like a case of extensive work with little to no gain. In an environment where the vast, vast majority of the community views such perspectives with disdain and the criticism has no chance to be seen by and affect those within the creative parts of the industry, is there really any value in the role? Especially in comparison with the amount of effort required to gain that role in the first place? I doubt you intend to imply anybody can become a popular anime youtuber or figuratively stroll into ANN and be accepted a regular writer. Further, for those outside those positions, what meaning is there in the furtherance of knowledge if it cannot even be readily passed along, other than self-gain?

That is, unless your article was aimed solely at those already in those positions, which wasn't apparent if it was the case.

Barring some sudden change in the stereotypical Western view on animation, I believe what you speak of would need to take root on the Japanese side before it could truly be successful here. If the Western anime fandom saw that Japan took the artform seriously, then more in the Western fandom may he willing to reciprocate. As is I am not aware of any attempts at professional criticism on the Japanese side even amongst those outside the industry, though I admit this could be due to varous issues of which the most important is the language barrier. Supposing that I am not simply ignorant, however, the issue then becomes how Japan views its own artform-- which is to say it is to this day still largely looked down upon as a medium for the degenerate.

If animation as an artform is stripped of its legitimacy by the all of the cultures that create it, what hope does it have of being viewed in a meaningful light?

Thus I think your view is too narrow. Before we can criticize the critic or his absence, we must first criticize the cultures that prevent the medium he would work with from being viewed as capable of carrying deep meaning in the first place.

Worded differently, does the critic give their medium its legitimacy by convincing the people, or do the people allow the medium its legitimacy and, by proxy, the role of the critic? Both sides are necessary for what you claim anime lacks.
All these concerns are addressed in the piece.

Did you not read it?

Over Heaven was a decent read. It was nice to see some insight into Dio's plan, as well as bs explain some things like why only Kakyoin and Polnareff happened to have flesh buds or the whole casket problem.

Also mfw
After that, I put on the stone mask; I would cease to be human. But
surprisingly, perhaps the thing that spurred me to do it was that man, Speedwagon.

The King's Avatar's first episode was waaaaay too serious, like, lmao.
The eSports struggle is real.
It didn't look awful so it's watchable but will probably wait to see if a Japanese dub pops up before watching more.
I'm a bit on the fence about this type of MC but there's stories where he'd work and Japan could use some branching.

All these concerns are addressed in the piece.

Did you not read it?

Yes, I read it.

...

Okay, let's try a breakdown.

The purpose of the article as per the opening statement is to establish the legitimacy of criticism in the anime medium.

The first part of the article is mostly spent talking about the purpose of criticism, defining what a critic is, and acknowledging some of the core issues with criticism in relation to anime that I mentioned in my response, namely the the hostility of the fandom to criticism (and its comparative acceptance in other mediums) and the lack of connection between the role of the critic and the creator (as is the norm in other mediums). Yet, you say that criticism can still offer a different perspective on the medium and note how Shelley and Sidney defended poetry as an artform in their day, and how that is largely absent from the anime medium.

The second part examines whether there is anyone unrelated to the creative aspect of the medium within the anime community who fulfills the role of the critic. You note that "...there is no mechanism where a critic imparts something new that moves beyond its own discourse but can still be irrevocably called the critic’s own" in the medium and that pieces of criticism that dominate discourse in the community are thus rare. You say that this is as much the fault of those who have a platform upon which they could create such a mechanism (yet refrain from doing so) as it is the fault of the community for being hostile toward the role. Thus, there are no critics.

We're on the same page up until that point, very close to the end of your article.

You conclude that since there appears to be at least enough belief in the role of the critic that some would defend it, more should take on the role of the critic in the interest of meaning and knowledge.

This conclusion appears to completely ignore everything that lead up to it, which is why I may appear to be regurgitating stuff you already talked about back at you. The issue is that you still haven't established the legitimacy of criticism in the medium, something that needs to be established in order for the fandom at large to accept the role of the critic. If criticism cannot interact with authorship, then its only purpose is to promote and influence discourse. Yet, the majority of the fandom is essentially anti-discourse. How is that to be remedied? Will not the would-be critics end up expending large amounts of effort for little to no gain?

Worded differently, with so few who are pro-discourse within the community, why is the formal position of critic necessary? You yourself note that, say, Pause and Select's series on the nature of the usage of the apocalypse in anime is largely ignored.

Something deeper within the community would either have to happen first, or there would need to be a single place where all of the discourse-minded people in the fandom gather. Otherwise any additional meaning or knowledge a would-be critic would unearth, along with the heavily limited resulting discussion, would quickly stop spreading and eventually be forgotten. There's no permanence with such a small portion of the community to sustain them, and their presence alone will not demand a larger portion of the community to recognize them.

In short, to successfully defend the legitimacy of criticism in the anime medium, one either needs to make a case for it that would make sense to those who are essentially anti-discourse, or all people like yourself and myself need to be gathered together in one spot.

Without any indication that either of those two things are likely to happen, I therefore question the value of the role of the critic in this medium even though I am very much for discourse.

I think yeah which is probably why there wont be a season 3 since theres nothing to promote with the anime despite having loads of material un-animated.

I'm not dying for more cause im not the biggest fan, but i wouldn't mind another season if it did happen

man tales of berseria is really damn good, i dont think it will top xillia 2 story wise but this is easily the best tales game since veseperia. I just wish it was harder cause god its easy even on harder difficulties. The combat is great but the mid combo switching once you get it down can just absolutely destroy bosses once you learn the character's movesets. it feels amazing to pull of though even if it makes some fights a joke and it does require more skill than persay ludgers win everything chromatus mode. wish i didnt get backed up with a fuck ton of work by due by monday cause i want to beat it soon but it may need to wait until tuesday.

It really is a shame that zestiria's failure holds its head over such a great game, like it doesnt detract anything from berseria on the contrary playing zestiria actually improved berseria. But thats where the problem lies, there are so many really hype moments that they do utilizing the lore and events of zestiria and its just a damn shame that zestiria wasnt more worth it as a standalone experience to make it and berseria feel like a juggernaut pair. Hopefully this is the return to form for the series and not just a one off return to quality, but given how the next game is going onto new consoles and is abandoning the engine they made for zestiria/berseria I imagine the next tales is going to be a while off. I'm expecting it very late 2018 to 2019 at the earliest.
