The lengendary Araki Tetsurou, director of many good animes (Attack on Titan, Death Note, Guilty Crown) does not disappoint. What a masterpiece! Amazing visuals, sounds, music, potential plot. 10/10 for first episode.

Whoa, you added one anime too many on there. Guilty Crown was a rip off of so many other anime and horrible, predictable. Only thing good about that show was the OST. G.C. showed he is not a good director when the source material is original, which is the case for this show as well. It would be kind of hard to make this show fail because they are using a tested and proven formula that worked in SnK.

apparently the Guilty Crown script was already bad, and he managed to "save" the anime by giving it music, visuals, style. if the same script was given to another director, I don't think we would have the same G.C.

Really good start to the series.
Of course the apocalyptic setting with humanity scraping for survival isn't anything new. I feel it was executed fairly well here, Though I think the Kabane onslaught should have been triggered differently.
Why would they just lower the bridge without so much as a check? Especially in such dire times.

The way the MC stopped the virus from spreading was seriously crazy though I don't get why the virus completely vanished. Even if he stopped from going to his head it did cover his chest so by that logic shouldn't he be at least half infected? Or rather he should have been infected since from what they say the virus's point of interest seems to be the heart.

The Soundtrack and animation were awesome.
The Kabane scenes were gruesome and I loved it.

As long as I get a decent explanation to all my questions, I'm sure I'll end up liking the series.

The only logic I see for the virus retreating is that the virus must have a very short life span so it rushes to take over the hosts system, in this case it failed so it ended up dying. However I'm pretty sure we'll get a more unrealistic answer down the line.(Or no answer)

That's quite probable. Well hope we do get an answer in the forthcoming episodes.

It would be kind of hard to make this show fail because they are using a tested and proven formula that worked in SnK. G.C. was rife with Deus Ex Machina that was never backed up by the plot. Just like how they lowered the drawbridge when they should have been cautious; it gave an excuse for the story to progress that way. I will admit that I was taken aback by the visuals and epicness that was presented, but given this director's track record with original source material (Guilty Crown), don't get your hopes up. This is very over hyped right now and rating will drop in the future more likely than not.

Just thought I'd point out, he didn't write the script/story of GC or this anime, he's just directing. The failure of GC's story lies with the script writer, Tetsurou probably did the best he could given the situation. Okouchi I believe is a much more capable writer, so I think Iron Fortress will have a much stronger story than GC.

I though this series might be a fundraiser for AoT 2 but OMG did they prove me wrong.

So in this season, White Fox has Re:Zero, Bones has BnH, Deen has Sakamoto( aka Swagmoto) and David Production has JoJo along with this from Wit Studio.

I might be jumping the gun but I think this season could turn out better than expected for some people.

Its sad that people who don't know any better will label this as AOT clone, when its nothing of the sort. Its a zombie apocalypse story in steampunk Japan.

Then again AOT was not that original in the first place, so it makes sense for those less well-versed infiction to compare things to it

Anyway this was perfect first episode:
- Legit good worldbuilding and intriguing and unique dark world. Love the steampunky aspects and the whole "train stations and trains" aspect of it.
- The zombies are creepy as hell.
- Some great politics and social commentary about the setting.
- The art direction, be it in beautiful character designs or the landscape, is breathtaking.
- The main characters are actually likeable and have actual brains. Who would have thought? I do like the fact that the MC can actually think and plan.

5/5 for first episode.

If you can rationalize the two pictures above you will realize plot wise how bad the first episode was. I will not say more.

Everything reeked Shingeki no Kyojin. But I gotta give credits where it's due. I think the MCs are likable so far so it's still watchable. After the first impression, I am not gonna give this more than a 6.5/10 if it doesn't improve.

I am thinking virus has parasitic nature. It goes for the host's brain via blood vessels.
So by cutting off or lessening the blood flow to the brain like he did, he made it hard for the virus to reach it, thus causing it to detract.

I think it is quite likely that the virus has phases like cancer - so you have the phase when it spreads trying to reach the brain and the phase when it gestates like a tumor.

And since this is a medieval japan setting, nobody bothers to actually experiment upon it or figure out what it is and just calls it a curse. And there being no way to counter-act it most likely is preferred since it allows bushi to stay in power.

Yea the setting of this series meshes very well with the concept they are pushing.
Plus it also seems that just killing these kabane is extremely difficult for the basic infantry so experimentation is very risky, plus the fear factor.

Plus I'm curious if he's really cured or if he's like a carrier now. Either way this series did a way better job than most when it comes to their "infection."

No salts here. Just stating the pudding. In open broad daylight, they make a train stop to make sure it's safe and even inspect the people on board stark naked for injuries and in the darkness of night, they lower the bridge to let it in without a second thought when the train was not even on sight. You may justify with the dumb nobody who lowered the bridge though but yeah, there was his superior giving instructions as well.

Xenocrisi said:
You must be the one who gave 3 out of 5 right? Huh.

If that is difficult to figure it out when I said my initial impression was a 6.5/10 then it will be difficult for you to fathom the two pictures I posted to rationalize.

My observation is that the first train came EARLY/off schedule, so they stopped the train for a bit to confirm. Notice that right when the second train is arriving in the night, they state that it "actually came on time this time". The point that they "even inspect the people on board stark naked for injuries" is irrelevant to the argument since there was no chance to do that.

Unless the virus is an actual parasite, I think he is a carrier. Its very likely. Just like with chemo and cancer, it should only be a matter of time when it tries to spread again.

But it also presents interesting idea - his survival COULD be detriment to those in power - because if he survives this and manages to find a way to counter-act it completely, then the threat of infection becomes not deadly. Suddenly this threat this danger, can be stopped from spreading. Suddenly there's a way to treat it and suddenly they can't just jail anyone or kill anyone under suspecting of being infected.

I could see bushi and shogun and various political aspects of the show being interested in him dying moreso than surviving.

I'm not even a big fan but had to say SnK clone is SnK clone, at least in the first episode. Zombies/Kabane instead of Titans/Kyojin. Some scenes were almost identical to SnK, that you immediately recognized it at first time. Some OST too. I knew that the second train will be filled with kabane, and I really hoped it won't follow SnK's scenario, but nope it had to be destroyed wall/entrance. Too similar. Amazing explosion though.

Mumei's bodyguard was really stupid. At least when you're bitten, contribute something like killing some kabanes or saving some people, instead he committed suicide just like that. Useless.

What I love is the warring state period combined with modern technology setting. Other than that, generic and filled with plotholes. For now, it's a big meh. ( ̄__ ̄)

Ohh that could pose an interesting story arc, especially since the weapon made is easy to handle for the masses. Though I think it would depend on how many of these stations are still active and if there's any nomadic people out there.

They may just want to kill him and steal the credit for the weapon thus becoming pseudo gods and be in control through praise and blind loyalty.

Some scenes were almost identical to SnK, that you immediately recognized it at first time.

Same director. He has certain quirks he shows in all shows, even Death Note.
Some OST too.

All of Sawano's music sounds the same no matter the genre or story type.

I knew that the second train will be filled with kabane, and I really hoped it won't follow SnK's scenario, but nope it had to be destroyed wall/entrance.

Zombie outbreaks are not limited to SNK.
EVERY. SINGLE. ZOMBIE. FICTION. has a scene where zombies break through the barricades.

Mumei's bodyguard was really stupid. At least when you're bitten, contribute something like killing some kabanes or saving some people, instead he committed suicide just like that. Useless.

I find it confusing - you are praising the show for the period setting yet seem to know nothing about it. Ritual Suicide was generally viewed as honorable way to end yourself. You can even see Mumei staying to watch it happen in this episode.

- Looks like I'm the only one who finds the story to be... not as interesting as it could have been. But it's still a solid 1st episode, because at least it introduces the setting, the MC, and settles the vibe.

- Kinda disagree with the minority of people saying the animation and the visual are inconsistent & kinda weird.
(or more like: where the hell dd you watch it? On what computer spec? This anime demands goods graphic card else the animation will be horrible + lags. (it does not look that gorgeous on my laptop, but works absolutely fine on a much better PC I borrow later.))

- Won't comment on OST. We all know.

The only minus? Looks like an elitist show that usually will end up having twist they will call good and I will yawn at it and they will start defending this anime like standard fanboy/girl and keep their unjustified pride of a delusion that they think they got better taste than most and start insulting people and becomes even worse than SJW and this thread becomes annoying as hell and then I need to buy more chips and waste some more money and time watching and commenting and laughing at people while I sit back with my own SJW pride that is as s*** as the people I'm laughing at.
Well, but we'll always love more arguments. Debates & arguments always give you more knowledge.

Its kind of sad to be honest.
AOT rips off a lot of by-the-book zombie genre memes and tropes. It was basically a mecha show set in zombie apocalypse. The only really different thing was that zombies were giant.

I mean the idea of cordoned off makeshift stronholds of civilization, zombies breaking through the barricades, a protagonist fighting infection, etc. Shitloads of zombie movies used those tropes for decades. And yet within anime community all of that suddenly is treated as if AOT is the only thing that had it.

I guess it has something to do with the fact that a lot of anime fans aren't well versed with products outside of Japanese animation and video games. Though, I agree that producers try to capitalize on AoT craze, but not to the point where Kabaneri becomes a clone of AoT.

I go as far as to say that any real capitalization is more of a flaw with the production staff - both the director, Araki, and the composer, Sawano, are basically one-trick ponies with tendency to reuse a LOT of their usual elements in their products.

The studio no doubt capitalizes on that, but I doubt most of it is intentional by the staff - these guys simply always do the same things where they are involved.

But then again, how much of that is "its because of AOT" and how much of that is because its zombie genre tropes?

I mean its not like political intrigue and conflict between survivors is that rare in zombie genre. Neither is scifi experiments on zombies.

Art and OST are really great stuff. MC is also pretty hardcore. I was expecting him to blow his arm off.

Not a fan of zombies, but I like the world they choose (post-apocalyptic industrial revolution Japan). I hoped they would make something out of it, but I discovered it was using this stupid format of half-series.
The drawings were nice, it would have look so great with cellulo *_*

A bit sad when the hero strangled himself, I was pretty sure he would cut his arm before the blood flow goes further. Expecting an explanation soon.
The zombies threat seemed real (even if I don't feel it after so many movies) until a little noble girl "killed" one instantly.

Just hoping they won't be contradicting themselves inside each episode. (a n original animation first episode should be better thought before it goes into actual fabrication)
