Weed is a VERY rare thing in anime, considering Japan's strict laws. Nothing is too taboo for Ikuhara. Gotta love him.

When they do mention weed in anime, it's usually a scary story of a bunch of people going crazy and killing each other because they got high haha

see for example detective conan episode 219:
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=471069

What I want to know is are there really run-of-the-mill teenage drug dealers like Kuji in Japan? Or is Ikuhara basing him on stuff he saw in the US and in foreign media?

also, I’m hung up over the fact that the cat swallowed the bag of weed whole like it swallowed a plastic bag that can’t be good

After they fought the zombie you can see Nyantaro shitting and a few shots later Kuji says "I'll take back this bag of herb", meaning that the cat shat out the bag of weed and Kuji retrieved it from the poop. So don't worry, he's safe.

Ok that’s good but oh my god is kuji rly gonna sell this bag of weed that was shat out of a cat 😭😭

Too much self-indulgence and random acid trips, a lack of narrative focus and character motivation. Now here are some questions that people will say, "it will all be explained later on" - and even if they are, I am more so questioning the creative decisions, like why? Why are there zombie kappa? Why does Keppi need little kids to steal their shirokodama (in the form of prostate)? And what is up with the two cops, who randomly seem to have the power to create zombie kappa? Pedestrian dialogue, more song, and dance numbers, reused scenes and loads more of the author's grossness for its own sake. The whole deal about the anal fixation thing (Japanese Myth) is already disgusting and tiresome and we’re only at the beginning. Are we seeing the directors's fetishes here? Because he's taking that concept to a new level. To enjoy the show's themes and symbolism, you have to go through kappa's molesting each other's buttholes, you know, that cinema-narrative dissonance.

zombie are "dead". Desire is your life. Modern people often lose their true desire and fall ill, in other words, they die. Otter cops give literal death to those almost dead people. I supposed I am one of those "almost dead" half-zombies. If we fall ill/ become zombie, we start to steal someone's desire. "I want to take" was the theme/title of ep2.
kappa is an amphibious creature. They live between something and something, water and land, dead and alive. Kappa zombie is a ghost of unsatisfied modern people.
Otter cops also give us an advice about the modern mental disease in the lyrics of the dance scene.
Why Keppi needs those kids? You already saw it in Penguindrum as frog-kun's story. The problem of our world should be handled by ourselves. It's metaphorically our own problem because it's a problem of "desire".
Anus is deeply connected to desire even in psychoanalysis. Feces is one of object petit a" examples that Lacan mentioned in his theory. It can't be seen from outside, but any of us have it. It's totally natural for us to feel disgusted because our desire is disgusting. We fall ill because we look away from it and try to make do with something else.
Kappa was chosen because Ikuhara thought he had to talk about modern people's desire. You don't need to understand the mythological items to start watching this show.
Some of your questions are like asking "Why does fantasy needs magic? They should just do it with the real modern technology". It's just what Ikuhara thought to be best for conveying the message like above. Haruki Murakami did the same thing. Countless theatrical writers did the same thing. It's nothing special. just a common technique to tell a story. We don't even need the word "magic realism". In more popular examples, Tomohiko Morimi has a similar style. No one asks why the protagonist's house has a parallel universe gimmick in Tatami Galaxy, right? But the meaning of parallel universe in that series is obvious to the viewers.

- when I said "and even if they are" I was meaning if someone gave in-universe justifications, but what I am really questioning is the "creative decisions" which is out-of-universe. To repeat my last sentence, to enjoy the show's themes and symbolism, you have to go through kappa's molesting each other's buttholes, you know, that cinema-narrative dissonance.

Then, you already answered your question. You made a reason not to enjoy one show and complaining it. What is the point?
You're saying that you won't like anything but what you decided to like.

So does Enta have a crush on Kazuki or Sara-chan?
Is Kazuki just cosplaying as Sara-chan or is he Sara-chan?
If Kazuki is Sara-chan then why did he refer to her as the "real one" when his brother said something about liking cats?

I legit think this anime will have a score of like 8.20 by the time it ends, I'm really hoping this gets popular because I really like it so far.

It's super implied

it's really confusing to use novel narrative trick in visual fictions.
Owari Monogatari did a good job to adapt it into an anime, but even that episode was not so perfect.

Isn't the plates of hope that enta got first is gold, and the second one is silver? Maybe they need to collect 5 silver plates of hope to turn it into gold one.

The whole concept is pretty interesting, but it's been used in a rather unimaginative way up to now. We are constantly reminded of the characters' motivations and connections but we aren't given any reason to care about any of that. The zombies are especially hazy since they are only briefly mentioned in some part of the episode as having something to do with the episode's main theme (boxes, now cats), so it's like they come out of nowhere. It's not enough to have an alluring premise if the outcome isn't paying off.

I've only watched a bit of Mawaru Penguindrum before this, but judging from what I watched, MP did a way better job with the characters and even its concepts very early on. The way it is now Sarazanmai feels a bit rushed and messy, which might be because of the short length. It's not bad in any way, but I don't see how it is impressive as some people are saying.

I mean, when people say things like 'gosh didnt know this was a yaoi' people act like that's more acceptable than saying 'hey didn't know this was gay'. it's the same thing

The fact anything gay is branded as yaoi dismissively is annoying in these discussions

I totally get you actually. People seriously need to stop equating regular gay romance with gay porn, society already equates gayness w/ fetishization enough, people really need to know the difference and understand that queer characters don't exist just for pandering, they exist because we exist in real life. Hell, as much as Ikuhara explores queerness maybe he's expressing his own sexuality. Btw yaoi fangirls are annoying w/ that shit too calling everything gay 'yaoi' and thinking everything is fanservice for them to fap to. Ugh. I like yaoi and that shit annoys me.

* And yes people definitely use their hate for 'yaoi' to sound less homophobic while being homophobic

Tbh, for me it's totally relative to what else is airing. The other shows I'm watching are RoboHachi, OPM season 2, Sarazanmai, Fruits Basket, Demon Slayer, Carole and Tuesday, We Never Learn, Fairy Gone, and AfterLost. Demon Slayer and Fruits Basket are interesting but none of those are as bizarre as this. It's the only show that catches me off guard every episode, which I love.

I don't know if that's how it is for other people considering a lot of people are watching sequels to series I don't care about (Ace of the Diamond, Bongou Stray Dogs, Attack on Titan), but this is the only show I'm actually having fun watching. Again though, it might just be that this is a kinda weak season

I dropped it at episode 2. And unfortunately I can't tell you why I hate it because I dont know why myself. It's just that every fram of the show makes my blood boil for some unknown reason. I just get mad when I watch it. Kind of the same feeling I had when I watched Cells at Work. I dont know. Maybe the show just isn't for me.

That was glorious, the soundtrack in this show is really fantastic and powerful, it has a presence on its own.
Let's be honest, those cops' dance should have been the opening, it was just too good, not only that, but it also puts what this show is all about in a fitting description.
This show actually has a deep layer to it behind all of its immense weirdness, I only got to see a clearer version of the side of the picture it tries to draw.
The scene after the end credit caught me off guard, I was not ready, I was never expecting something like that from this show, I'm just not a fan of that. I hope it's nothing too serious though. I reminded me of the scene at the end of the first episode of School Days.

It’s got a trans person and gay scenes of course it’s going to get bombed with a low score

I don't like Enta!!! I wish he wasn't part of the trio.
That said, I am very curious about what made Kazuki start to crossdress. It appears to me that his relationship with his brother could have been good even without the Sara connection so I am waiting to find out exactly what led to that.
Anyway, I enjoyed the episode.

Another ‘WTF’ episode really!

I’d a feeling Enta had secret feelings for Kazuki, and fudge he actually does! The ‘meowhat?’ totally summed up my thoughts there. I’m really curious to know more about Kazuki and his precious younger brother, there’s definitely something more there. Also, Kazuki mentioned something about the ‘real dish-girl’, hmm. On the other hand, Kuji is doing all this for his elder brother too. And it seems as though the two police officers are behind the zombie-acts, that dance was just .. incredible in so many ways xD, this + those reused ‘Sarazanmai’ act scenes just made this an even more weirder episode. Will this increase in weirdness continue to the very end lol?

Comedy this episode was gold though, I’ve to say. Hand-holding scene there between Kazuki and Kuji was freakin’ hilarious and the Enta/Kappa Heir Hand-holding was the best moment of the episode! I’m really liking that Kappa heir, seeing him took out that towel and slap his butt there was ridiculous! Some of the soundtracks used were a perfect addition too, so props to that!

Watching two episodes of this in a row is just a no-no, lol.
One episode a day and the weirdness is already at peak level.

Another great episode, lots of details about characters and their relationships. It also established the narrative structure, with a clear short-term goal and a bit of repetitive sequences, just in Ikuhara's fashion. Though they differ a bit from the previous ones. For example, note what Keppi riding the kappa trio to the Desire Field passes by. Cat drawings and writings saying that Sarazanmai is about taking risks and sharing consiousness. It's different from what we say in the 1st episode.

- Haruka seems to be terminally ill. He's always shown sitting, and Ikuhara is not new to the "ill sibling" trope. Moreover, in the beginning of ep.1, during Kazuki's mysterious sequence with the otter sign, we see a drum with kappa stickers slapped on it, and the kappa looks dead or something like that. Is it related to Haru(kappa)?

- Enta is surely not the most patient person, throwing that golden dish away like that, haha. It wasn't even supposed to be his, I guess. Keppi didn't have time to finish his speech about the dish.

- Tooi sems to have screwed up with the weed stuff and got disclosed by somebody, hence the waterboarding scene.

- Why are the boxes messed up? Enta has Tooi's, etc. I wonder what's behind that.

- Enta's phone case has a football player doing the show's signature pose, cute

- As someone has already pointed out, Enta's sister posing in a photo looked like a Candy Candy reference, and Nyantarou's outfit is colored like the trans flag. Also note how Kazuki cut Nyantarou's ear and then look at the poster...did he castrate the cat so it looks like a different cat in case its owners find out? Or was it already castrated and Kazuki just cut its ear? Either way, that's wild.

- I like how willingly Kazuki turned around to prepare for shirikodama extraction, he just accepted his fate haha.

- Keppi seems to have red eyes. At least they're like this every time he open them.

- So far, Kazuki is the only one to leak his hidden desires/secrets. Why? He was also the only one to have received the silver dish.

- "Squeeze out every drop of your desire". That's h o t. The whole dancing sequence coupled with the otter song was amazing, though there's stull much to learn about Reo and Mabu. They seem to be fulfilling the role of bears in Yuri Kuma Arashi, though it's just my speculation. And there was something really resembling the famous elevator scene from Utena. "The future belongs only to those who connect their desires". I'll remember that. But what's their purpose really? Are they after people with "unnatural" desires? After "desire extraction", those people lose the only thing "connecting" them to this world (their weird fetish, like cat fur or boxes) and die, either literally or metaphorically, turning into kappa zombies, and fight kappas. Is this how otters and kappas fight together? I'm very curious about Reo and Mabu!

- Finally, do I even need to mention how attractive Kazuki looks in his Sara outfit?

LMAO he stole the poor cat!!!! Hahaha ma boy is crazy. Wtf is the problem in the relationship with his lil bro? The brother seems chill and like the only thing needed is for Kazuki to just be a normal brother. Seriously so far I don't understand what's the deal there.

And boy oh boy, that kiss at the end O.O Nyantoro had my exact reaction. Never imagined I'd see a gay kiss in the anime (not complaining, that's pretty cool, I like it)

I got weird vibes after watching this up to this point, I guess Kazuki is just a trap crossdressing freak who wears it especially for his brother, still a weird way to make someone happy–I was hoping he was actually connected with the idol but I guess not.

What's more weird is that they're always going inside, that... ugh... just to get a "desire". Everytime I see it makes me think "it's disgusting". lmao
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

This show is meh at best, a bit freaky/weird but that's ok I like weird/freaky anime but what I don't like is the re-use of animation/jokes etc and this show is a bit of a master on this subjects.
Another thing I dislike is this. Japanese animators/creators/studios stop making boys in your shows look like girls! A boy is a boy, we have an outie, not a innie. Let's make the MC little brother look like a girl, let's make him and his older brother be confused about certain stuff is not like he's older brother doesn't have a screw or two loose.
