Wouldn't mind another 6 episodes like these where they're still facing goblins, the last thing I want is them rushing this show with no attention to any other characters or the world they live in. Great episode.

A hat? Against 3 foot tall goblins? Might want to prioritize that cod piece there Bucky.

So Mary has PTSD whose only symptom is being anti-social. Okay, whatever.

6 episodes down. We're at the half way mark.

despite how slow this show may be, I can't help but to get the feeling that it's going to down really fast (down as in depressing and dramatic), unless they're trying to shape it into a split two season show with 12 episodes each

I don't give a fuck about her circumstances: they might be sad but that's no excuse for her shitty attitude. She's essentially been acting like a bitch, B.I.C.T.H. (and in that order) and not much else thus far; I really don't see how little sob story is supposed to make up for her being genuinely mean with every single fucking member of the party. Even goddam Ranta almost seems tolerable compared to her.
Emotional distance is fine, but that? That's just being a gigantic turd. But it's alright folks; since she's a cute girl with a tear-jerking backstory, all shall be forgiven and forgotten by next week.

Fuck it, I didn't like this episode.

ps: also RIP in pepperoni, Grimgar budget: that little sequence around the 14:30 mark was all kinds of not awesome.

You're missing the point.

She wasn't being mean. We're seeing the plot through Haruhiro's eyes. This episode was about Haruhiro coming to terms with his role as a leader, and actually paying attention to the other people in his party. If you consider her saying "Don't care" when someone asked her what her favorite food was, I'd think you're thinking of the wrong word. That's being dismissive. Being mean would be saying something like "oh you like chocolate, that reminds me of shit every time I see it. I hate it." I don't know. I need practice being mean.

Mary's just being dismissive. You can tell because Yume and Shihoru don't particularly dislike her, and Shihoru's still trying to be considerate of her.

Mary only comes off as mean because she doesn't want to form any close bonds, but she can't help but protect people given the opportunity.

If Mary was a guy I would've had a better opinion of that character because of this episode.
I'm not talking about what this episode was about or how it was relevant to Haruhiro's struggle to find his place as new leader. I was talking about a specific aspect of the show (mainly a certain character) that bothered me enough to bring the whole episode down (at least in my eyes).

When I say all shall be forgiven by next week I'm not just talking about the main cast but also (and mostly) about the audience and its general attitude towards that type of character (especially when they're female).

And frankly, the whole bit about Mary just being "dismissive" rather than "mean" seems more like you're arguing semantics than anything else. Don't know about you, but I'm not sure anyone I know would ever see someone acting like her as anything other than unkind. She is dismissive no doubt, but when you add to that a harshness and rudeness and tendency to ignore, antagonize or shut down people at the slightest remark, then forgive my french but you have all the ingredients of bitch.
And let's not act like the other party members don't think she is a rude person: almost everyone says that at least once about her.

I think we could have a better discussion without all your not-so-subtle remarks about why the male audience likes Mary :P

I can only speak for myself, but I like her because unlike the other two girls, she has a strong presence that's not related to how often the "camera" looks at her boobs and/or legs; also, she trash-talks Ranta the most, which is extremely satisfying given that he's the catalyst for most of the cringeworthy LN comedy.

Unfortunately the show messed up the presentation of her backstory, RIP.

Ah, my assumptions on Mary's past were right. Seems like she's acting all cold and distant with her new group because she doesn't want to form any close relationships with anyone in it. She doesn't want to ever experience the same feelings of anguish as she did with her first group, so she tells herself to distance herself, even if she doesn't want to. Overall good episode, a slow one as always, but more depth is always welcome.

It's not semantics.

If someone's mean to you, you feel hurt. They're attacking you to hurt your feelings. Mary is not doing that. She doesn't say things to make someone else feel terrible, and that's where I don't see where you're coming from.

Maybe I'm too nice, but I feel like a bitch is something a lot worse than what Mary is. A bitch is someone that plans shit underground while keeping nice exterior. Someone who does shit to hurt other people's feelings just so she can get her way.

Mary is honest, direct, and dismissive. That's what's most important about her character, and what I feel the show was trying to convey.

Kinda feel the same way about it cause with another 6 episodes the only way I can see it working is going down fast pretty much. I'm worried that they will end it without full closer and ruin a good thing.

Yeah, I'm pretty curious how it'll turn out. Despite what people may say about this show, I really enjoy this more than most shows because it's not flashy and they take the time to develop the situation.. though the same time being they may be developing it a bit too slow for a 12 episode season. half way through and still on goblins... I can't help but to wonder if they're still on tutorial island haha

Really good episode!

And I've got the feeling that we're about to enter the meat of the show, for Mary will truly join the group (btw, when they're saying friends, shouldn't they be saying comrades instead?), the teamwork is improving, with Haru learning how to be a leader and Ranta, while still a obnoxious little shit, at least do something other than the final strike.

And I don't know if I'm to only one having seen that, but what does Mary means when she says "I don't remember for how long I've been fighting"?
Does that means that she "appeared" in the tower like the others? If yes, how often is that, how many soldiers are like them, do they ever recover their memory one day, does it happens anywhere else?
So many questions...

Yeah I just don't want to see it end without a second series and without full closer that's the only thing that worries me. I mean look at the sacred blacksmith or like claymore there's other examples out with animes that just cut off without really having an ending.

Well, let's see:

I've looked around and technically the definition does not include any the implications you're making about the word ("evil" seems much closer to the definition you're trying to give, actually) in your first post, so I don't think I'm wrong for using the term to qualify Mary's overall unpleasantness and nasty attitude. I also never said nor implied that she's doing what she does to hurt others, because she clearly isn't (just as Ranta isn't being an utter prick just for the sake of triggering his teammates), and my bad if the use of "mean" led you to think that way.
But I will keep using that word or the word 'bitch' to describe her character as long as she doesn't do a bit of work on herself.

As much as I hate SAO, Mary's character makes Kirito look good. At least, Kirito had the decency to go solo in SAO since he's scared of losing people again but still he cooperates in boss fights. Mary, on the other hand, kept joining other parties but acts like a bitch and gets kicked out. Why can't she be like Kirito and go solo since she can't handle people? Oh right she's a fucking priest and she can't go solo.

Looks like the party is finally able to hold their own against a few goblins.

Communication issues with Mary still ensue out of every small incident.

But it's nice that the party finally learnt why Mary has that melancholic expression, Pretty tragic story but it's wasn't exactly something unexpected.
Hope the party can get Mary to open up them soon.

Meanwhile I always thought Kobold's were weak/average monsters xD

Won't someone please save us from Ranta?

I get that people want to be polite/don't want to rock the boat in their situation possibly, but I'm just not sure why no one says much to Ranta about being so friggen obnoxious. Just a little something, so he'll at least tone it down for later episodes, come on. The whole beginning scene was just so obnoxiously dramatic for no reason-- they animated the guy as if he was asking what happened to someone (who died) or something. Dang.

Then again, I kinda figured that the whole group kinda has minimal courage when it comes to social interactions? Just staring down Mary as she walks into the place, awkwardly approaching Mary to grab a bite to eat with them-- I can see this group having difficulties approaching Ranta about his behavior, but man it's painful. They could at least say a little bit when a certain situation comes up instead of just sitting there and taking it.

I like the fact it tries to explain her battle strategy or I would complain about that. I only wrote about 2 things:
- it simply recycles the deceased leader story. In a very short span (in the anime at least).
- I understood why she won't get closer, and it made perfect sense. I pointed "the scene where she's been asked how she wants to proceed in battle" and she aabsolutely refuses to answer, despite the fact she does not wish to live her traumatic experience again. How is a vague "battle planification" talk a thing to establish closer relationships? It would even prevent what she fears.

For those other points:
This anime introduced me to a novel I did not know, I consider reading it now. In other words, it did its job, and I am pleased.
Random behaviors? Yes, I think too.
Minimal backstory? It is a start in the good direction, I am all for it. ^^
Somecomplex past? I am all for it if it serves the story.
Plot talking, slow? You got me! I would love to watch that. ^^
This isn"t cliché, it is a basic narrative schema used all over the world through many eras. What you build on it will be good, bad or cliché.
A side stuck in hisWays? Perfectly fine: his role is to complement another character, to help in his development.
No problem either with the "genius" character, as long as it is not the permanent solution to all problems, and the writer should not expect me to believe the character is a perfectly regular kid.
Fan-service? Why not when it is not invasive or done like it is an absolute requirement (the mandatory underwears/curves scene, the camera uselessly taking a certain position without any visual impact/meaning)
The use of tropes? Why would it be a problem? It allows the creator to show his skills when he goes beyond the trope, tweaks it, transcends it. Again, a trope isn't a bad thing, what can be bad is what you make of it.
oy
Finally... I am not a masochist. Two little problems with a character and a lack of idea for one thing won't prevent me to enjoy something I did not throw in the mud (I merely thought I could point out three little facts here, based on the thread name)

Thank you for reading me, despite my grammar.
PS: I feel like I won the lottery. None of your lines seemed about what I wrote, yet I was the chosen one among every other person who clearly "attacked" Grimgar.

I laughed at Ranta's reaction to the misunderstanding of what Yume and Haruhiro did.

I really wish Mary would lighten up and be more friendly. But I understand the reasons for why she is how she is and it makes frogive her a bit. That is a horrible backstory having half of your friends die. She won't be wanting to get too close to them so she doesn't have to suffer through the turmoil of her friends dying again if it happens. I feel bad for her.

They handled the episode relatively well, but these episodes are starting to feel shorter and shorter every week D:

Mary x Mogzo I have a feeling that isn't ever going to happen cause the big guy always seems to have the worst luck and I have a feeling that he won't last long and is probably next on the death row. Hopefully I'm wrong, I'd rather someone dies like uhh........I dont want to say Ranta, it's too obvious x_x

The tragic backstory was pretty generic, but I still really want to see what kind of effect it has on the group and smiling Mary was too cute @_@

Hands down the best episode of anything so far this season barring maybe ERASED Ep 2, which it is on par with at worst.

For me it was rather weak episode. Somehow it lacked focus and impact. Mary's background was as standard and bland as it could be and. Somehow this episode was neither interesting nor emotional and compared to all previous episodes rather disappointing. I would expect this show to present relationship between Mary and the rest of the party much better. So far it looks like another "melt the ice queen" cliche. Hopefully the change in Mary will be slow and gradual instead of "instant friendship, just add compassion" type.

Episode that does not change the narrative rhythm, it was slow and slower; however, blends well three key factors, namely: insight, action and plot. The narrative is Mary centric, in the dialogue, but in fact the story focuses on Haruhiro and on group dynamics, overall I am satisfied with the progress made by history. The drawings are not bad, but there is a quality not excellent, an entirely different dough soundtrack, beautiful and catchy. The new opening is not bad although there is some fanservice inside

Holy shit, are these type of comments ever going to end? Does no one understand that the pace of this show is supposed to be this way. It's not SAO. If you want that, go watch SAO.

Just because the pace is intended doesn't mean it isn't bad. If the characters were better then sure, go ahead and spend more time on them. But they're all terrible and one-dimensional outside of Haruhiro. I'm wondering if you even realize this is only 12 episodes. Because for a 12 episode anime, this is simply T-O-O S-L-O-W. Go fanboy somewhere else.

I have to recognize that this show is slow but I really like it that way.

Although after all this dialogue we finally see a real development in the characters. Haruhiro is turning into a really good leader, Moguzo is now being relevant, Ranta is still annoying but he's useful, Shihoru is finally using her skills right and can speak to the other party members , Yume (<3) is showing her interest for Haru (I hope this is not the only important thing she's get to do in the serie) and Mary... Well, at least we know what happened to her (although it was a predictable backstory), but from now on she's gonna be more attached to her partners, I hope.

Seriously I cant be the only one who noticed Mary wearing fingerless gloves and black stockings that mysteriously appear in one shot then disappear and reappear in the next. Same goes for the bow changing size on Yume back.

What sometimes raises my blood pressure is the unbelievable noobines of these guys though. Mary on the other hand knows her stuff. That said my only real problem here is Ranta and he needs to die, now. The return of Moguzo is a good thing, hope to see more of him in fights now that he finly gets a helmet.

Besides that the anime is okay-ish. It's different than the typical fighting anime but its fine. I wonder how it will turn out given they only have 6 eps left. It would be nice if they could exterminate that big ugly bastard Kobold who killed Mary team. Even better if Mary could terminate PTSD.exe and return to her normal programing. Haruhiro becoming an actual effective team lead would also be nice. Ranta could be eaten by something but I guess thats asking too much.

As for pairings no idea at this point. ShihoruxManato looked like a thing but it triped a death flag so now, it could be YumexHaruhiro, but it might as well be YumexShihoru lol what a twist that would be. Or it might as well be nothing. This doesnt seem like a romance anime anyway.

We got a 3:3 ration so we could teoretically pair up everybody
Maybe like this: Mary with Haruhiro, Shihoru with Moguzo and Yume with Ranta? (poor Yume) Lets switch it to YumexShihoru and MoguzoxRanta rofl
NVM Im just babling.

OMG. It would be fun. Poor Ranta ending up with "flat chested" Yume. LOL
Given how he constantly mentions it(despite it not being true) he might actually have feelings for her. He pays too much attention to that. He doesn't really say Shihoru is busted - he uses the fact to point out Yume is "flat". Haha. Cat is out of the bag, Ranta!

It is only weird in the anime because the anime decided "Hey let's just change the look of all the characters and at the same time destroy some stuff that happened in the light novel because of it".

In the light novel Yume has a flat chest, in the anime she doesn't because fan service.

This was a good episode. There was actual character growth that wasn't too thrown about. We are also getting to know a characters background more than others ala Mary's past explanation. He's also taking charge as the leader and showing good sings that he may have what it takes.

I'm still hard set that the red head needs to die and be replaced. I can't stand that asshole. His high school perverted mentality is ruining it for me. And bullshit. You know damn well there's something brewing between the two of them. lol Also, me tinks that Mary may like big, tall, and gentle.

Was I the only one that noticed that the walking scene had the archer chick going side to side but not having her body animated? HAHAHAA

Finally,

I don't know anything about Mary

Staring Ben Stiller. Out this summer.

Fantastic episode, the slow pacing is really perfect. I'm happy that we saw Mary's past. She tries to keep her power for the real difficulties.
Haruhiro is a good leader :)
