Yeah, it took a while, actually, to type down the analysis for this episode… been too busy to make one, though I finally got the time! Just like the previous episode, I really liked this one too! Though instead of being calm and wholesome, it was calm and a bit comedic in many parts! That said, this episode also felt the most psychological thus far. I'll go over why.
The episode itself starts with a-

AWW, LOOK AT THAT WHOLESOME TOGAME SMILE!!!
Alright, that ain't the first thing… we right away see Togame & Shichika at the next sword wielder's place, and Togame was trying to beat a game of Shougi against her so that Shichika may battle the sword wielder. That said, the sword wielder is disappointed that Shichika is gonna fight her WITHOUT a sword, and she instructs him to wear armor and use a wooden sword. We eventually learn that the sword wielder's name is Zanki, and that the sword she wields happens to be the only one without any sort of poison.
Togame reveals that coming up with a plan to beat her is seen to be quite tricky since using strength and skill is believed not to be enough to overcome her. She also recalls how she had such potential in Shougi during their match at the start, and how it's a shame Zanki chose swordsmanship over Shougi, leading Togame to believe she'd be such a formidable opponent. Her belief in such is definitely something to remember when it comes to Zanki herself. Speaking of which, Zanki eventually visits the two and admits that the fight with Shichika earlier was quite unfair, since she believes that Shichika was just THAT weak with a sword, and she's willing to take him in as a student to learn how to use one.
We then see that Shichika is getting excited to learn how to use a sword. Still, Togame begins to raise a sense of jealousy since Shichika is gonna be with another woman for a while... hence, when he left to go to the dojo again on the next day, Togame stayed since she believed she was gonna be a distraction for him, as she probably believed that her cuteness would be so much of a distraction for Shichika... but he denied that would be the case at all, which rises Togame's jealousy even more... and Togame says she's only staying in their place of stay mainly to come up with schemes anyways... and Shichika just accepts and leaves.... Of course, the jealousy rises even more... well, someone seems to want attention!!! :3
And that's why Togame eventually decides to go out and visit Shichika during his training! BUT, she comes across the two during moments that seem quite sus to her, she believes he's making out with Zanki instead, lol!!! Togame's jealousy obviously increases even more, and she even gets irritated when she hears Shichika mention how his day went during training.
In one of those nights, Shichika reveals that Zanki's dojo trains in using a sword for life. Rather than using a weapon to cause conflict, the dojo teaches students to avoid conflict; that's why Zanki wouldn't even kill a fly. She's definitely the pacifist, but we eventually see how exactly Zanki uses the way of the sword, in which it doesn't involve her causing any conflicts against others, no matter what...
...and then we cut in another day of training with Shichika...

(holy heck, every anime swordsman needs to take note of this pose... Shichika poses a REAL threat with this one!!!)
On that same day, Togame decides to surprise Shichika by bringing him a big rice ball for him to eat during a break from training... that's pretty sweet! :)
But instead of being the one to surprise him, SHE'S the one who comes upon such a surprise 'sus' moment instead!!!!!

Ok, I find it hilarious that they use the same OST track from Nanami's scene killing the Bee Maniwa in Episode 4 JUST for this entire misunderstanding sequence!
THAT SAID, even though I thought the moment was funny on the first watch, the second viewing made me feel sad for Togame since you realize she's someone who doesn't like feeling alone, especially when you take into consideration her past and such... and, again, these are stuff that makes me see a lot of myself through Togame as well, in which I can also get jealous at times and be misunderstanding in certain situations, and I don't enjoy feeling along so much...
Now, we reach the part where Zanki speaks with Shichika and admits that she's training his first student, and I really enjoyed this entire conversation.
This conversation is the part that shows why Zanki has got to be the most interesting sword user in this anime (aside from Nanami, though she technically wasn't one in the start, so, y'know...). This moment is when you realize that, yeah... Zanki truly is the one sword user who feels most human among the rest... I mean, she was the one who acted strictly to Shichika for him to have the proper needs for a sword fight to fight fairly, instead of going all out just cause she has the upper hand. While the others go ahead and fight on Shichika, Zanki wants things done correctly and fairly. She also wants to treat the passed-on legacy of the school's ways, rather than make things seem half-baked just for someone's convenience. It's also interesting to see how the sword she posesses had no poison at all, meaning that she was able to use it without having the thought of corrup power consuming her... but, poisoned or not, I also get the feeling that it's overall a metaphor for people who use weapons that can corrupt ones soul and use it for just corrupt power VS those who can use such weapons with controlled ideals and only used for justice. That's why Zanki uses the Outou Nokogiri sword to improve herself—she actively removes her own negativity and chooses to avoid conflict, which allows her to attain true kingship. During this conversation, Zanki also highlights the difference between duty and individuality. Even though she was tasked with wielding the sword, she loves Shogi and wishes she could have pursued a life built on love instead. Still, she keeps saying that becoming a swordsman has helped her grow, but she nonetheless wishes to stop this passing direction that she herself doesn't want to go, since it's not what she wants… Yes, Zanki was someone who was passed down the Outou sword as the next head of the school, and it was then her responsibility to keep the sword's legacy… but instead, she just asks herself, "Why do I need a sword?"
So, Shichika returns to the inn where he stays and meets up with Togame again, only for her to be still jealous of Shichika being with Zanki that Togame brings up that she finally got a scheme that'll be able to defeat Zanki without needing to know any sword training that Zanki attempted to pass on to him... cool, she can act all emotional and such for an amount of time and still eventually come up with a scheme after some time... just like me sometimes, heh...
That said, Shichika had to admit that he already knew Zanki's lessons that a scheme that involves winning through a fluke would be a bad idea since he technically shouldn't be an amateur in using a sword anymore... hence why Togame decides to-

SHE KISSED SHICHIKA ON THE LIPS!!! AWWWWWWWWWW, I LOVED THIS MOMENT!!! IT ALMOST MADE ME CRY (Even though she kissed Shichika to make him forget all the time he spent training with Zanki, lol)
The next day, Togame convinces Zanki to fight Shichika one-on-one, in which she agrees, but that Togame would have to then give up on the Outou Nokogiri sword if he were to lose... and before they were to do the match at all, Togame faces Zanki off through some games of Shougi once again!!!
And then, before the fight, Shichika claims that if he can defeat Zanki, having him as her student was all worth it in the end... only for Zanki to notice that Shichika was holding his sword wrong, LOL!!!!!
Anyhow, the fight commences, and we see how psychological it ends up being... for Togame begins naming Shougi moves, making Zanki focus on and imagine them, as she tries to compete against them as she stands in front of Shichika during their 'duel.' She gets so focused on the imaginary Shougi game that she completely loses focus on the sword fight, and Shichika manages to land a single blow on Zanki, even if he still falls in the process, lol!!!
Anywho, the scheme made Togame & Shichika win the sword, and they get themselves to prepare to leave the village. As they converse with how the whole situation went, we see how Zanki has actually accepted at one point for Shichika to actually fight against Zanki through his own method of sword fighting towards Zanki who was using her method... though, we don't really see that moment at full to happen... and, according the the preview for EP 10, it seems we're gonna have some moments that still has Zanki??? It could be a round that we didn't see after the fluked one.
Even if that isn't the case, Zanki nonetheless gives the sword to Shichika and Togame, and the legacy is meant to be over for the school… but Zanki mentions that the legacy won't die, because the legacy doesn't come from inheritance of a sword… it comes from oneself! What I liked about the final scene with her talking to Shichika as she passes the sword to him is that the shots are mainly going back and forth to Shichika and Zanki, but once she says the following quote, "I would be honored to face you again. Until then, I will look forward to your coming, and continue to watch over the Shinou Issou school's legacy," it then show a shot of Shichika with Togame next to her instead… which can make the viewer interpret this scene as two ways:
1. Zanki was still talking to Shichika, and she's gonna keep the legacy by teaching others the way of a sword that isn't with the Outou itself…
2. Zanki might have said that comment to Togame instead, meaning that, to keep the legacy alive, she's gonna make the school more of a place for Shogi since that's what she loves (Evident with how she enjoyed playing Shogi with Togame herself.)
But here's another thing I gathered from their conversation after Shichika defeated Zanki in the duel: Zanki explains that wielding a sword becomes a curse when it makes someone weaker, especially since she already believes that using a sword should help people improve themselves by shedding their negative traits and avoiding conflict. So, her thinking that it's a "curse" to grow weaker with a sword means that Shichika can't improve himself or let go of his flaws to grow as a person. But here's the interesting part: if Shichika is a sword himself, and we watch him change and grow a little in each episode as he learns new lessons during his journey, doesn't that show he is already improving himself differently?
If anything, he seems to be sharpening up each month with lessons and views that he is most likely gonna become a fully sharpened sword by the end of the journey... so, would it really be a curse for someone like him at all then???
Idk, it's all an interesting concept, for how can a sword use a sword at all??? Heck, saying this is basically 'how can a person who's sharpening up themselves with new lessons and morals be able to self-improve and rid themselves of personal negative aspects to grow and become a better person???' Can Shichika rid himself of the inner demons he still has, or are they something that seems to fade away instead??? Or is it that he is getting rid of his inner demons, but once they're gone after being sharpened at their fullest, he's gonna stay 100% perfect with no flaws at all??
...or maybe I'm seeing the metaphor incorrectly... the metaphor itself, instead, is that he himself can't refine himself without others??? Like, here's the thing: a sword can't refine itself; it needs someone else to sharpen it, guide it, or use it in a meaningful way... self-improvement is real, but self-improvement isn't solitary... growth is relational, in which we become better through others... which, in this case, Shichika was never able to sharpen himself entirely while being alone in an island with Nanami for so long... but Togame is the one who was able to sharpen him throughout their journey for him to actually self-improve!!! Hence, that's possibly the whole idea of why a sword can't use a sword at all: a sword can't sharpen itself; it needs other people to sharpen it properly!!! (omg, this anime is so dang poetic, I love it! :3
Still can't wait to hopefully see the reveal on why Shichika can't hold swords literally next episode though.)
The episode then concludes with Togame and Shichika walking back toward their inn as they discuss what the previous general's original purpose for collecting the swords might have been. They tease each other a bit before entering the inn, creating a nice warm ending—until the episode reveals that their next destination is Togame's hidden birthplace, which she apparently hasn't visited in 20 years.
20 years??? Shichika was right... she really does look much younger... whoa..
Then the episode ends, and... woah, this ED song though...
Yeah, this ED song became my new personal favorite after ED 4... and the thing is, the song does not have the same tone for the overall episode... not only did the song itself bring themes of what happened in this episode, but it serves as a warning to how this journey is nearing its end… Compare this to how EP 5 did it… that episode was also meant to be comedic, mainly because of how heavy EP 4 went, and the ED for EP 5 had a lovely, joyful song sung by no other than Tamura Yukari herself!! Here, however, the ED song doesn't hold back despite the episode being more comedic. It warns the audience that the journey won't feel this light anymore. Soon, the endgame will begin, and everything will get heavier. We're also about to enter what's considered the fourth and final volume of the Katanagatari light novels, which covers chapters 10–12—so there's that as well!
But, yeah... endgame seems to be near, and the preview for EP 10 definitely shows that… for the preview shows that Togame will come by her hometown as a child, Shichika seems like he'll remember her sister, and Togame might get some reconciliation with her father before he parted away… which means that EP 10 is most likely the point when the end for this entire journey in will soon behold… oh boy... ;_;
Yeah, like the previous one, this was also a fantastic episode, and definitely the most psychological one so far!!! I really liked Zanki, and I love how she avoided being poisoned by the sword and showed that people shouldn’t let intense cycles continue for too long—they should break them and start a new, more meaningful one. She ended the cycle of being a sword user for a dojo so that she could pursue a life with Shougi! Plus, she was surprisingly funny sometimes!! I loved how she showed a lot of character compared to the other users! But, dang... ngl, this was probably the quickest episode so far… like, it's the usual runtime, but it felt much quicker for some reason… dang, I wish it could have felt longer or something… I loved the dynamic between Togame & Shichika here, despite Togame feeling mostly jealous throughout the episode, and more Zanki would have been nice as well! (Idk, she became my 4th favorite character in this anime ngl… she was such an interesting yet fun character who, again, seems to will have more time seen in the next episode... so, yay!!)
Ranking the placement of this episode, I'd say 7>8=9>4>3=1>6>5>2
Yeah, idk... I really liked this, and the previous one, to say they're both equally great... and, yeah, I'm gonna get to the final three episodes soon during this winter... I was hoping I didn't need to make another long pause like what I needed after EP 7... but work and responsibilities took the best of me over this range of months, so it actually took me a while to write this discussion response in the first place... THAT, and I'm also a bit nervous to end this nice journey with Shichika & Togame... I'm gonna miss them when this anime's over!!! :(
Even so, the final three are near, and I'll watch them all within each month in this season... here's to the end of the journey... |
