@MegamiRem It was Emperor. And have you missed the ep. 4 preview? He will ask her to heal Lihua (the other top consort).

Is it just me or does this show kinda remind me of “Raven of the Inner Palace”? I mean they are both set in ancient China & within the Inner Palace but this third episode is definitely similar to one of the early episodes from said show. 🤷🏽‍♀️
@SRNCotaku Yes, it remembers a less mystical, more feet on the ground Koukyuu no Karasu. Jusetsu brang me the same pleasurable feeling.

I knew it would be incredible but it exceeded my expectations since i didn't even read the manga/light novel, I only saw the trailer.
It was a very good start, I'm excited for what's next.

Don't you worry :) ... this one made me chuckle. In case you missed it, she is experimenting with snake bites on her own arm.

Secret333 said:
She doesn't seem to have any direct family so no attachemnt there. [...] Who's the old man taking care of her? Idk and I guess I shouldn't care cause Maomao doesn't seem to.

Where did you get THAT from? Not only did she worry when she was abducted that her foster father would be worried - why would she worry if he was eating properly if she didn't care? Thing is that once you're in the inner palace you are not free to leave. She does care, but there's nothing she can do on her own during her contract.

What kind of "motivation" do you expect from someone in servitude? You have next to zero freedom to pursue your own life - for "motivation" you need freedom to do what you want to do, so rather let us agree on "interests". Maomao showed initiative in her attempt to rescue the consorts and their kids, while she tried to remain anonymous and not stand out.

In the end, the narrator explicitly spelled it out for the less observant viewers in ep1: Maomao is curious, has a insatiable appetite for knowledge and a "little bit of a sense of justice". Within these confines she tries to remain hidden without standing out as much as possible.

I don't know what you mean by that. If you're saying her experimenting with snake bites on her own arm is a flaw then it isn't. Maybe you could make an argument for recklessness but until the show punishes her for that it'll be what it is right now, just a way to explain her knowledge and immunity to poisons.

You and I have different definitions of "Worry". Getting kidnapped is a distressing situation but you wouldn't know that based on her response to it. It seems to me like the show wanted her to be in servitude, but had to explain her knowledge so she had to start with the freedom to obtain it. Her getting kidnapped feels more like "This is how she moves from this enviroment to this one. Ok now the show can start". The only thing I could think of to explain her attitude is the fact we catch up with her 3 months after she's kidnapped but that doesn't explain her carefree attitude to the whole situation while getting kidnapped. They had to walk through the city to get to the inner palace and the whole time her mouth is free but she doesn't try screeming for help? What a calm and collected child!

The simplest motivation for someone who wasn't in servitude since the beginnig of their life is to get their freedom back. Maomao seems to have that but then that's seemingly gone once she has the freedom to make drugs again. We're not watching someone try to get out of their current situation, we're watching the daily life of apothecary.

Yeah I get that. I never complained that she doesn't have a personality. My concern is rather that this would be all she'd have for the rest of the show. I've seen a few characters like that and I'm afraid I'm seeing it again. If that fear is proven to be unfounded then great!

@Ri-KoRin Wait, so when you read the manga or the original source, you never speculate about what would happen or contemplate how you would like it to proceed? You just read the text, put it down, then eliminate all thought like a Buddhist? Sounds boring.

3 EPs in and we're already done with the dancing consort story. It's a 24 EPs season, and the show already hinted at Maomao's crooked pinky a lot this EPs. Will we get to Rakkan's story this season? I mean, it's 24 EPs....

I really hope not, since doing so would mean cutting a lot of other materials....
@uncleqrow nvm, just watched the PV, yep, we'll have Rakkan's story this season.

How much materials are they willing to compress for this?

Overall not a bad show so far. This episode provides some character nuances and has a happy ending that doesn't feel too cheesy or naive. The vibe is comparable to the royal palace drama fantasy "Bird of the Inner Palace" from last year. But again compared to that show, the Apothecary Diaries feels more grounded and realistic.

Personally this was one of the more memorable chapters for me from the manga, and I'm glad they adapted it so well. I had really high expectations and think they did okay on episode 1 & 2, but this episode really got me impressed. The story will just get better from here though, so I hope they keep the anime quality as well.

After watching three episodes, I really liked The Apothecary Dairies and Maomao is such a likeable protagonist along with pretty boy Jinshi. The animation is great and the soundtrack is really good.

So Concubine Fuyou's sleepwalking dance was just a ruse for her to get out of the castle and reunite with her childhood friend who was serving in the military. It seems that the Emperor himself has approached Maomao with a sudden request.

The first batch of actual "feels" from this anime came this episode. I was kind of caught off-guard too. I didn't quite expect the Fairy tale ending for Lady Fuyou. She was a smart lady, indeed. The music hit at the perfect time. Even though we barely knew her, I felt happy for the outcome. Also, loved the moonlight dance scene. I can understand Maomao's astonishment upon viewing. Maomao was as great as ever and Jinshi still creepy as hell. I don't know what to think about this dude yet.

This was a beautiful episode. It's so much quieter and softer than the other two. I love that Fuyou was able to be with the one she loved and I wonder about Maomao's comment about "what kind of medicine would it take".

And of course, Jinshi and Maomao's dynamic continues to great

Yinghua is so kind and beautiful, it's adorable to see her crying every time she sees the bandages on Maomao's hands, hahah.

And, thank you for the sweet love story. It was heartwarming to see them enjoying their time together ♡

Anyway, Lady Lihua and her servants are so troublesome. The preview of the next episode doesn't look so good.

Loving this show so far, it was definitely well worth the wait. These first 3 episodes really do have me invested in this show now and I think I'll be watching until the end.

No idea about flowers, but clearly Maomao does, and the way she used floral symbolism in her explanations like that I did very much enjoy.

Seems like knowledge of her being an Apothecary is spreading though, just gotta hope that information doesn't get into the wrong hands.

I liked this Fuyou story. Girl was playing the long con just so she could be with her childhood friend. I’m glad it all worked out in the end for those two.
