My mean score is 5.5, which is smack down on "average" on a 1-10 scale. 4-6 are the most common numbers I use because most anime are about average, and it takes a lot to convince me something isn't average (whether it'd be for better or for worse). I don't pay attention to MAL's active user rating (which negates the silent majority who just come and score 7+ on popular shows and leave), so I can't say whether I'm harsher compared to these users here. |

Well, if you look at averages, the median score on a 1-10 scale is a 5.5. My average rating is a 5.91 which is pretty close to the median. Hence, I would say I'm neither harsh nor generous. Ignoring the numbers for a moment, I would consider myself a critical but fair reviewer. I give anime the scores I feel they deserve. Which may be low, high or in between depending on the anime. |

I'm pretty generous when it comes to scoring. It really depends on how much it keeps my attention. I usually drop a lot of shows (i probably should add them to my my list) so it generally depends on the story. If the art is great like Made in Abyss or Berserk then I'm definitely reading (at least until the story gets boring). |

Fairly generous. Each show has it's strengths and weaknesses. And if I truly hated something more than likely I wouldn't have rated it at all. But they really gotta blow my socks off to get a 9 or 10. |

I'd consider myself to be a pretty generous scorer. I'm not hard to please when it comes to anime. I mostly expect an entertaining show with lovable or interesting characters but I can make exceptions. Even anime considered to be "bad" would probably get no lower than a 7 from me but it just depends. |

I usually just give a 10 to something I found resonated with me pretty well and leave it at that. I don't quite watch anime super duper often anymore. If something got me to sit down and watch it for a while and made me want to sit through the whole thing, it's probably a 10. |

Well, realistically speaking, shows are not made to try and be bad; they must be good enough that they profit off of it. Really well-produced series are 9-10. A good enough show would score a 7, an 8 if I really enjoyed it. A "mediocre" to me would be 5-6. 3-4 is just a show I didn't like and has little value, and 1-2 are only really there for shows that don't have a point of being made. Although looking at my stats, I have 15% rated as 9 (which may be a teeny bit too much), so I'm pretty generous. |

I can still bring scores down depending on my enjoyability. For example, "Hamelin no Violin Hiki" started out as a 7 but as I kept on watching, I brought it down to 5. On the flip-side, "Koisuru Asteroid" started as a 7 and then pushed it up to 8 and same goes for "22/7". Personally, I do let a lot fly depending on how much I enjoy particular show. In regards of Death Note, I'm not really fond of the last couple of episodes of the Anime but still, it scored high 8. The only thing that I've ever given "1" was Neon Genesis Evangelion: End of Evangelion. So, where do you stand? Are you generous or are you harsh depending on you average score? I consider my self pretty generous. If I enjoy a show, it is at least 6 |

I guess generous cause my default and most average score is usually 6 and I happen to higher up the score if the art was really good or if I had a really fun time watching it, also I usually try to line my scores up with how the scores on mal's work, where the lowest of scores are usually around 5 and the highest are around 8 or 9, its extremely rare to see an anime below 5 stars, usually the bad animes are at 5 and 6 And my average score is also pretty high cause I generally dont pick stuff I know I won't enjoy |

It's quite amusing how people with high average scores consider themselves generous. If one's average score is, say, 7.36 and they rate something a 7 that means below average ... and effectively is a negative vote. There is a difference between an 8 handed out by somebody with a very high and a very low average rating. Because the value of a vote is ONLY the difference between the vote and the voter's average score. Most rating sites normalize this with trivial math, matter of time before MAL will do it too. Be smart, and don't ruin your average. The anime you really love deserve this so your vote has impact. |

Pretty generous I'd say, you would have to do something ridiculous to completely turn me off for me to rate it below a 6, at that point I would have probably dropped it. Usually anime is entertaining enough for me to give it a 7, if it has a lot of layers to it then 8 or above (given some exceptions) anything a 5 or below was either straight down the middle or just really bad, but there haven't been that many shows that I have felt that way about, at least so far from what I have been watching. |

I believe that I'm a generous scorer. I haven't given any anime less than 5 scores YET. To me, The ending is what matters. If the endings good, then I'll give it +2 points. I believe that if i didn't like an anime, it doesn't mean that it was bad. It just means that it wasn't my cup of tea. Even if i wanna give a bad score to anime, i don't (Most of the times). inim said: Maneki-Mew said: My heart says that my ratings, plus minus some taste related variations, are very close to anidb.net's normalized ratings. Which means they are on average about 2 points below MAL's ratings. Which is perfectly fine, I maintain my list for myself and not to counterweight what I consider a broken rating algorithm on MAL. anidb.net displays both, rating and not normalized numerical averages, and MAL long term has no option to do the same. Otherwise, eternal rating arms race and inflation renders the scores completely meaningless.inim said: Generosity is an illusion, because each time the average is changed as well. (...) The psychological problem of numerical rating systems is that you create "value" out of thin air, and that makes people think they can be "generous" at no cost. You can use the two of us as examples. We have > 70% affinity, on over 220+ shared items, with an absolute rating difference of 1.9 over our shared set. If you look at the affinity formula, you'll see that it also has that calculation of the average and adapting absolute scores relative to your personal average before comparing. It basically compares the deltas of your ratings to your average rating and not the raw numbers. That means our lists are pretty similar, except for the fact they are shifted by 2 in absolute terms. You are free to use 7 as "average", but I personally prefer to use 5. And that's pretty much the only difference we have :) As for bad shows, I don't really watch too many bad TV shows because like you say they take long. But I love trashy 20th century OVAs, and rating range 1 to 3 is pretty much where they are. MALGraph has a good plot in which you can see how much watchtime you spend in each of your rating classes. Me too spent most absolute time in 7s, disproportional much time in 8+s (because longer shows tend to get higher ratings from me), and very little time in my 1-3s. But I have many 1-3s because most are shorts and OVAs. Again, this makes perfect sense to me. And a 6 is not "just fine". Only 326 of 798 (40.8%) anime on my list have a rating of 6 or better. On your list 706 of 1002 (70.2%) have ratings of 7 or better. Which means my 6 is "worth" more than your 7, relatively. And after normalization, only relative difference matters. Maybe I'm cursed because I have a college degree in science and not psychology, but to me that all feels very natural :) I export my ratings to anilist and anidb, so I don't work around the lousy MAL formula. I deliver very good raw data in the sense that it is well distributed, and leave it to the servers to make the best of it. Some do better, some do worse - but why would I care? Mathematically yes, but there are is a meaning behind the numbers and since 5 literally means average, I use it for anime that were pretty forgettable for me and I somewhat regret the time I spent with themt, , but they are still not so bad that I would rate under 5. Maybe because production values of art, animation and music, or if I liked a specific idea. Mostly a score under 5 or 4 is just unfair in my eyes, if the anime has at least in the production and art department pretty decent quality. If I rate 4 or even lower, which I rarely do, then because it met the adjectives that describe the numbers. Like I said: It's not really about the statistics, or that you should adapt your score to a gaussian distrubution. People's opinions on the media the consume and their behavior or taste aren't so mechanic like you described it. And since people aren't machines, you have to force yourself to get a gaussian distribution with a median of 5. And then it's a "lie", since you don't actually think that so many anime you rated with 5, that means average, are mediocre for you. Most people just don't consume everything they get, and they don't watch a dozen anime per season (it's something you could see in this forum etc., but most anime fans still don't). So they already choose what's right for them and get naturally a higher score out of it, because the anime they watch is already presorted. And if they do ... well, like I said, it's their business, if people wanna waste hundreds of hours on a medium just to find most of it bad to mediocre. I will always think it's an unhealthy consume behavior and I personally don't understand it. I don't know either, why people care about how their distribution looks like, so much. If your opinion and enjoyment on it match with the word that describes the number you want to chose, you got your score. And I don't think 10 is a masterpiece per se, because that term is vague anyway, but I have quite personal reasons for 9s and 10s, so they are the anime I out for myself above others. Ofc I got my "top favorites" and fandoms, but if people want to know, they can ask personally. The scores are just a first orientation imo. |

Mathematically yes, but there are is a meaning behind the numbers and since 5 literally means average, I use it for anime that were pretty forgettable for me and I somewhat regret the time I spent with themt, , but they are still not so bad that I would rate under 5. I think you fixiate too much on numbers as symbols. Assume for a moment you hadn't 10 steps, but 100 or even 1000. So your "this is a strong 7/100" would become a 76/100 and a weak one a 66/100. The more, the merrier. The numbers describe an order. X is better than Y if it has a higher number assigned. Having only 10 steps is too little, and obfuscates the idea that you just order from best to worst (with the option to put more than one anime in each numeric slot). But, you don't even need to see the numbers, they are just a clumsy kludge. My thinking about the list is based on the idea of "order". If I had to pick 20 anime I had to watch for the rest of my life, I could safely say "all rated 10 or 9" and would be done. When answering forum questions of "give me good sci-fis", I just go trough the list and pick all rated > 7. The point is I consider the way I organize my list very useable, it's a tool. The numbers have no real meaning, they are an imperfect vehicle to describe an ordered list. Actually I'm a huge fan of rating by ordering, which is not used much but superior. You basically just insert a new anime anywhere you want and deem fit, by this pushing down anything below one rank down. No "rating numbers" are needed and visible, you just rate relative to what you already know. Numbers can be assigned in many ways if needed later. Again, this is part of how I rate, if I'm between two ratings, I look at anime below and above and if I find "no, this new entry is definitely not as good as X Y and Z I have in the higher number", it goes to the lower option and vice versa. Long story short: I don't see numbers, I see an ordered priority list. |
