This buzzword has been so overused that I'm starting to get confused and not knowing what does it actually mean anymore. Does it mean that the anime was just "very serious/dense"? Or that it tackled in a unique way very interesting social, political, religious, humanity-related issues? Or that it was thought-provoking for any reason? Or just that it felt "weird" and/or was full of symbolisms and metaphors or other content hard to understand at first glance and extended an invitation for the viewer to interpret all of it in their own way? Or all of the above? What anime is indeed deep and what isn't deep? |

I would go with "All of the above." Usually when describing something as "deep," I think people are referring to the themes (or at least I usually am) as having something more than what's seen at first glance, and tackling (or attempting to tackle) themes that are usually considered "heavy." I think the symbolism and all that are secondary when I use that particular adjective, though I try to avoid it. |

Deep anime is basically 2deep4me stuff.. Aka any anime that has complicated themes / heavy stuff that might be a little hard to get for some people.. There is generally no comedy in these kind of shows and often relies on heavy psychological stuff.. Aka mindfucks. |

Its very much under the surface. No but seriously. It's supposedly "smart" ones that make you think and take themselves way too seriously. Some hidden message or deeper meaning, etc. But what do I know, I'm new to this. Maybe it really does mean its just far underground. |

For the average anime guy? Either an insult or this: For me? Something that tries to explore a theme or another in some meaningful way under its fictional story. PS: isn't "deep" in english a mean to designate something "profound" (to think about) as well as something mysterious/hard to understand ? @Clebardman I didn't know until now. Not a fan of this picture, I had to read it multiple times just to decode those internet blabbers (and I have to translate "moar" into something understandable) Is this mocking people unsatisfied/enraged by the end of Evangelion TV? |

A deep anime is a term used by many to describe how the story of the anime is mature (somehow complicated) and dedicated to adults most of the time .. for example , monster is the the most mature anime you can ever see .. deep story , serious animation and some adults scenes |

It means something that pierces into your very soul. It takes out the core of your being and rips it out, and says "I know who you are". Try watching 'Welcome to the NHK!', which if you're a neet, should rip your heart out. For a lot of people feelings of love are common, so slice of life is a pretty big genre as the depth involved in the passionate feelings of those in the story is what people want to see. Those people want to know that they're not the only ones, and are likely to enjoy a series that most closely represents their own situation. So what's deep for you and me can be two different things. You rated FLCL poorly, which to me is great at showing the inner struggle of a boy trying to find his place in the world, as well as NGNL, which explores a reality in which people who are extremely capable are still considered without merit in today's society. |

Obligatory 'well they go pretty deep in hentai' joke. Personally, I would say something that challenges a particular set of beliefs/world views. Just having a lot of blood/drugs/whatever other adult themes are what some people use to define deep, but I don't think it's very accurate. Also it's kinda of subjective as it depends on what you can relate to/speaks to you on a personal level. I have to say, for me anime is something fun I like to watch before I go to sleep. I don't want anything I have to think deeply about. That's what books are for to me. I find it hard to take any real profound meaning from anything animated. I'm sure there are 'deep' anime but I'd rather just stick to trashy rom coms tbh :P |
'I love you because you're you. I'm happy that you're whole. I don't care if there are sides of you that I don't know, or don't like. If that's who you are, that's fine. As long as you're whole, that's enough for me.'-Kouko Kaga |

It's highly subjective imo so there's no single correct answer. For me, it's a show that's not only trying to simply entertain me but I feel like it's also trying to make me think about more serious themes/concepts and is actually successful at doing so. So yeah it depends of how you perceive it. |

Depends on who you ask. In my opinion, something which has good character development, and occasionally throws a bit of realistic drama in to change the mood is "deep." But, to a lot of young people here, they'll probably say deep is "weird, dark psychological stuff," but I disagree with that. Weird stuff is just weird stuff. It's not "deep" at all. |

my impression is it contains themes/motifs that relate to social/cultural/historical events or ideas that shape the way we think and try to subvert them. They explore natural inclinations of human thought, and take a self aware approach. Basically, they relate to real life stuff that has already happened, and not idealistic/fantasy stuff that you want to happen. that's the best I can explain although "deep" is a vague word so it might mean something else. |

Basically just an anime that explores it's themes in a profound meaningful way.whether it does that through comedy or through a psychological lense is dependant on what themes the show tackles. Also the symbolism is really secondary but it could be helpful in getting the point across or presenting the themes in a more clever way. That's pretty much what "deep" means for me. |

Something that tries to convey a message. Not the same thing as "serious", though. Darker than Black is serious but it doesn't transmite anything aside from mindless action. I'm fine with anything that is genuine. For example, both NGE and Assassination Classroom are storys about growing up and finding your place in the world. They walk by a totally different path, but in the end they still try to convey a positive message (and i love it). It can also be used as a offensive word towards anyone that doesn't like the popular anime of the season that just exists for the sake of existing. Y'known, "you hipster 3deep5me" meme. |

Deep anime are anime that most people only here of and enjoy when they are very deep into the anime genre. Just kidding no one uses this definition, although it does technically hold some truth. Let's cast aside those people who misuse "deep" to justify anime which heavily uses (and often abuses) the shock value of violence, blood and death first though... Personally I find that people usually describe "deep" based on the setting and themes explored in an anime, so it's got nothing to do with how well-executed an anime is. In other words, "deep" has got nothing to do with how well the anime can engage the viewer. Sure anime being deep alone can engage some, but there are deep anime that are just plain boring for most people. |

I found this on some website about literature, if it helps: Depth The concept of depth as a value begins with the idea that we are historical and symbolic beings who are formed largely by culture but who also have common human needs, and who experience life with the complexity that I have just referred to. Depth is the word used to capture the representation of the symbolic and historical meaning of life: to explore the hidden forces of which we are seldom aware; to invoke, often through images, the ways in which we think and feel that are not usually represented in common speech; to disclose and dramatize the often hidden effects of history and culture. There is more to us than our surface, more to life than our physical sense of it. For a work of literature to have depth is for it to create a sense of this, to define some of the forces and feelings which give resonance to our being. |

A 'deep' anime is basically 1. A show that offers something other than surface level entertainment. It communicates some idea for the audience to chew on. 2. It offers said something in multiple layers. It will use every element of anime(animation, etc. etc.) to its advantage to communicate its idea as complexly as possible. It's not really hard to get lost on using this term. |

I thought when someone referred to a series as "deep", they usually mean that it's mentally engaging. It makes you think, either through philosophical topics or anything that's considered to be a topic for seinen anime. Honestly, it's way overused. Basically to label complexity nowadays. I prefer to associate it to works which makes you ponder, though, and not necessarily complicated. For example, Tatami Galaxy is a kinda deep show, but really simple in execution. |

"Deep" is something that makes you THINK. Here are some "deep" questions to give a idea; > What is the meaning of life? > Why do we exist? > Does Nature shape our personality more than Nurture? > What is true happiness? > What make you, you? > Who decides what morality is? > Is there a supreme power? Those are "deep" (philosophical) questions. Now, when a anime series decides to explore these questions/topics, depending on how well the writers do, the anime can be considered "deep" The reason I say "depending on how well the writers do" is because philosophy, mental conditions, and things of that nature can be very difficult to discuss let alone write a story about. Example of a failure? Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series tries (and fails) to create a engaging story centered around a boy with multiple psychological disorders. Unfortunately, they tried (and once again failed) to have said boy resolve his inner demons (psychological disorders) by asking himself/having a discussion with himself(?) about the meaning of life and what makes someone a individual. Long story short, in the end, it was all just a bunch of philosophical babble coming from a 14(?) year old. None of it went anywhere. |

When I think of "deep", I think of something heavy- not something necessarily complex in narrative form or plot, but rather something that plays around with the psychology and emotions of its characters (as well as the audience), and where almost every interaction holds some sort of meaning- everything in a good story should do something. Then again, there's a fine line between being deep and being pretentious. So series like Monster, Hunter x Hunter, Honey and Clover, Rainbow, Koi Kaze and March Comes in Like a Lion would be anime I'd class as "deep". I'd class stuff like Mouryou no Hako, Mawaru Penguindrum, Sasami-san@Ganbaranai and Subete ga F ni Naru as being more on the pretentious end of the spectrum (even though I do like a few of them a lot). I thought Kuzu no Honkai, Psycho-Pass, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu just tried too hard for me to get really immersed in them. As in they started good but seemed to have bitten off more than they could chew and just spiralled into mediocrity imo. It's ironic but I think the more simple a concept, the "deeper" and more thought-provoking it becomes. Throw in too much drama, too many bizarre concepts or too many characters and you end up with a great big mess and a 2deep4u sticker because you'll just lose your audience. |

The question now is: Do these questions create a dark and painful air? Or does the dark and painful air facilitate in making you think of these? |
