Wow. Now that was one very awkward situation xD
Waiting for Rei to like... I don't know... have emotions? lol.
I don't get why people didn't like this one, some of the responses were funny as hell. Especially Shinjis calling bullshit on his father doing a good act.
I thought the episode was really good. Sure, its a bit slow, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Personally I really like this so far, looking forward to the rest.
Yeah, personally I'm enjoying the slowness so far. I'm sorry, but not every episode has to have a big awesome battle. Evangelion seems to be paying more attention to it characters, doesn't surprise me after watching Top wo Nerae.
"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."
Awkward moment.... yeah that was very awkward. Rei reacted differently than I thought she would. She's really close to Shinji's dad apparently. Things are going slow but good character development.
I'm just coming off of Ghost in the Shell so this seems like it's moving really slow and is boring the hell out of me. I will continue to watch it though.
I wonder if there's a deeper connection between Shinji's father and Rei. She's obviously very fond of him.
Rei's actions seemed reasonable in my opinion - if the only person you cared about got insulted like that by someone who barely knew him, what would you do?
(And since Rei doesn't seem like the type to shout "Urusai!" at the top of her lungs...)
Anyway, episode was :/ for me. Focus on character development is nice, but this is slice-of-life pacing for an action-type show. I was hoping for more info on Rei, because all that's really learned this ep. is "Rei likes Shinji's dad. A lot."
Why does Shinji's dad ignore his own son and prefer Rei anyway? "They're both not adept at life" or whatever doesn't seem like a good enough explanation.
Note: I haven't watched Evangelion before; that's why I sound so speculate-ey.
Kind of enjoyed it, Rei seems to be a very introverted person, but how come she gets along with Shinji's dad so much? And why was she emotionally unstable at that time, when she wasn't able to synchronize?
Now this is what I'm talking about. It's time to let the evangelion pilots to get the screen time. For the past 4 episodes Shinji had been hogging all the screen time. Good thing to see another evangelion pilot even for a short period of time.
Okay so Rei is really an interesting person. I have no idea why she acts like that but when she's infront of captain Ikari she acts like a normal girl. What's the deal between them? Are they performing incest acts in the dark? This is just not right. Ikari acting all caring and loving towards Rei and not to Shinji? Is she like Shinji's sister in another mother? Lol.
Oh and the best part was probably when Shinji came to Rei's house. Guess what happened? He touched Rei's breast in their first encounter. Damn son Shinji's a player I'm telling you. Too bad he got rejected TWICE. First was when Rei stormed out of her house while Shinji was talking and second was when she bitch slapped Shinji, lmao.
Rei reminds me some kind of zombie. Shinji... well, he is Shinjiish as always. I dont mind slow pacing, I am kinda enjoying it. End yeah, it seems that Shinji is trying to destroy EVA intentionally :D
AirStyles said: So... Shinji's father is the only "human" connection for Rei, no wonder Shinji got slapped. Rei is not emotionless, she's just... mental.
Agree.
But anyway, it's also quite bad for Shinji to find out that his father cares more about someone other than his own son.
I can't say I'm disappointed by this show so far, but it's not living up to what people mention as a 'must see show'.
This episode was somewhat better then the others, but still feels quite slow and drawn out. The awkward scene with the breast grab took way too long. I'm glad we get to see some of the characters develop, but i feel like most of this could have been done in one or two less episodes.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this show. I just came from the ridiculousness of Gurren Lagann, and it must just be me, but I'm loving the slow pacing. Really lets them show who the characters are.

Me too! Not the Gurren Lagann thing, but everything else you said ;D
I'm always surprised when I come onto these discussion forums and see people complaining the ep was boring, when I thought it was great :P
Shinji had a really interesting reaction to finding out his father that gives not one fuck towards him did so much for Rei. Highly of the episode.
Rei and his father seem to have a much greater child father relationship. Although I strongly suspect that by the end of the series it will be a LOT more then that.
Shinji got taken out before he could even launch. Lovely.
Pacing seems fine to me. Why can't it be more then one genre? There is no law about it. It's not an action show, it's not a slice of life show. It's a god damn story and it doesn't need to be constrained in the limitedness of being boxed into a genre.
I don't really have an opinion of Rei. I don't really like her. Thats because I'm scared she won't have any actual development. The whole mysterious bullshit just puts me off. Hopefully she will be like two other characters who are allegedly based off her, Yuki from Haruhi, Rurifrom Nadesico and actually skip the no character development parts and jump right into....development.
And...poor Penguin. ....Why is there a Penguin again?
I so-o-o-o-o saw this coming. I mean - can anyone recall case in anime where boy enters girl's house and this awkward situation does not happen? Cause' I can't. Anyway, it was unbelievable great to get so much of Rei in just one episode. About her being emotionless... let's see how her character will build up, I'm not gonna make conclusions now.
The slowness isn't what bothers me, it is the extreme unlikeliness that that would happen in the "awkward" scene, or whatever. coming out of the shower naked, walking up that close, him falling, opening the underpants drawer, falling on top of her, and grabbing her? hell no. if they had one or a couple of those happen, would have been fine, but all of them? yeah right. It just annoyed me. yeah, its anime, yeah its fiction, but i thought it went just a bit too far. Also, at this point i still don't really like any of the characters. I mean, they are well developed and all, i just hate all of them. It is definitely a really good show, just so far not what I like. Just disappointed. Sorry, I don't mean to offend, I just had to vent a little bit.
I'll say it right now, the characters were clearly never intended to be likable. So, if you don't like them now you probably never will. Of course, Asuka hasn't shown up yet though.

Why is it so popular if none of the characters are likable? If this starts getting into spoiler land I can just be patient and keep watching. lol
it's funny seeing all these reactions in 2011, where during the past 2 or 3 years, those awkward moments are the only thing we see in a generic anime. And for some strange reason, we all seem to enjoy it. Oh, how I miss the past so, it's so sad. Oh, so sad. Looking forward to the next!
Rewatching this...it never ceases to amaze me how Evangelion can move so slowly and yet be so enjoyable...Rei is such a puzzling character and it's nice for her to get major screen time...the slowness and awkward silences/situations are what make Eva...
Well that's some awkward situation to start off with :p "he sure liked it though" but nice episode but damn another cliffhanger when it just started to get good! Up to the next episode waiting with an epic battle!
