----------------------------------------
I find this episode cute and wholesome. As the launch date for their mission has already been decided to be 12th December, so the stuff is gonna have to be sped up eventually. As good as Irina has proven herself, one mistake in space can be devastating. So, she needs to be completely prepared and trained for what she's going to do. She still has three weeks of training left to do.

But, meanwhile, it's time to take a break from all the training and go out with Lev to the city. She has never seen a city, so it's a new experience for her. Her expressions are still cute as ever especially when she's drunk. (> <) What an adorable vampire. LOL

Nice breather episode and I think it's nice idea for Irina to take a break after all the training. With the launch deadline approaching, they must be feeling anxiety and excitement.

And lol Irina getting drunk from alcohol. Maybe she should avoid drinking in the future.

The ice skating scene was a thing of beauty.

The UZSR higher-ups are relentless to hastily prepare Irina for lift-off, but it's not like Lev has any choice to retaliate.

Ooh, some nice Irina fanservice lols, that got Lev bucket-sweating in blush. As expected, the other soldiers will not lament on Irina being a tool of objectification. Some nice moments between both Irina and Lev, though tensions still exist within the base.

Irina definitely loves having fun at the jazz bar though, and it shows from her facial expressions. More lemon seltzer for her, while Lev has actual alcohol that's too much for the cutesy vampire. It's also notable that scenes like this always lead to fanservice, but I respect this show for not going down that angle in such restrictive lands. Even ice-skating in the dark, and Irina almost looks like a professional esteemed Olympian skater with the nice BGM on top of it.

Hmm, "Snow Thaw" Lev, that's a good nickname. The exposition of Lev and Irina's backstories being "same same but different", and Irina's name (which means peace), it all adds up to their alluring character dynamics. Irina's a strong vampire girl, and she only cares for her dreams before humans can do all sorts of vile things to her.

More training for the 3 weeks before the expedition on the double.

The ice skating scene was incredible, but felt kinda random. But if drunk Irina is serious enough breaking the chains that was that heavy coat, is all good.
Meanwhile Lev doing what a Russian would do, sit down and have a drink.

Great episode! So Irina volunteered to go to space and is actually 17 years old. Lev and Irina both went to a jazz bar and it seems Iría got drunk very fast xD. Quite a wholesome episode and I really liked it. The ice skating scene with the music was really beautiful to watch also I guess ‘ttebayo!

This series has been amazing so far. Looking forward to the next episode!

That racist bitch is so annoying. Other than that a fun episode with lots of Irina, she was adorable. The skating scene was beautiful. Lev and Irina interactions were amusing. I hope even after the experiment is over they can be together.

Lev and Irina getting closer at the Jazz bar.

They were like "it's not a date" to Natalia.

Sleeping on Lev's shoulder.

The ice skating scene was magnificent. Lev believes they shouldn't bring war into space and Irina (who's name means "peace") is on target to go into space before humans, that's very poetic.

Think I'm done with this show. It's pretty and a fun concept, but all the focus is on the dry characters and their boilerplate dynamic.

Just a bit earlier YouTube recommended me a video about the quietest room in the world. Lay out was similar to the anechoic altitude chamber from this episode. Funny coincidence.

Anyway. I'm so glad that I didn't drop this after the first episode. The guy who said it gives him Plastic Memories vibes last week was right on the money. This is one of the closest things I've seen to it, narratively and tonewise probably the closest and I love it. Beautiful episode.

Didn't expect the skating scene, but the visuals were genuinely pretty and dynamic enough that it felt like a real routine.

This show is genuinely wholesome and a good commentary on what the Soviet Union was really like in those days.

Gotta say though, after actually remarking "Oh look a female lead that's of age, that's rare", finding out now that she's 17 is kind of weird lol. Can't anime just leave the MCs as adults for once?

Holy cow, what a beautiful episode.

The show has been slowly building up the relationship between Irina and Lev and I think we've entered full gear in this episode.

The skating scene was absolutely beautiful, between Irina's outfit and the reflection of the moon on the lake, which gives the illusion of Irina skating on the moon.

The BGM was gorgeous (loved the jazz theme of this episode) and of course Hayashibara is voicing Irina to perfeciton (drunk Irina gets infinite moe points).

Cannot wait for the next episode.

wholesome episode and really beautiful ice skating from irina!

she says she doesnt mind being disposed of as long as she can go to space but that makes me sad honestly. i cant say that i see her being killed off but what with the people saying she should be treated like an object, idk

The parts with Lev and Irina are my favorite and thankfully this episode (and tbh this series as a whole) has a lot of, which I'm thankful for. I really enjoy the dynamics and the second half especially with all the skating was visually nice. Good soundtracks as well

I'm liking this series

My favorite episode so far, no cap. Prolly cuz I'm more interested in the character interactions than the space plot. And this episode was just that, good stuff.

We find out the story behind Irina's tragic past and how she ended up being selected for the experiment. Tbh initially I was thinking the humans raided her village and kidnapped her. But as she told Lev "Don't invent your own story" applies her also lmao. We also learn the exact story behind how Lev was demoted. Based on his personality so far, I can't see doing that. Considering how calm he is when his colleagues talk crap about him and Irina.

Well based on next episode, it seems that will be another good one as well. Isolation huh? More scary than most people will realize

This episode was so beautiful and alluring in addition to that stellar exquisite snowboarding dance which was also very mesmerising. Finally, now we also know the motives of Irina throwing herself to be a human experiment in order to reach the moon. Love how she said I want to reach moon 1st before human defile even though she had to be disposed. She is putting her trust on him and he will do whatever it takes to ensure she reach the moon. Seems like we are gradually stepping on the potential romance between two of our MC, they are getting close, knowing each other, enjoying each other embarking on night outing which was cute. And, Irina in this episode was pretty kawai especially after drinking wine and she is a classic tsundere. Irina enjoying her outing and moments with Lev was great to watch. It was also good to see both of them being interactive and opened with each other sharing their vital and private information, only think she remember nothing because of the overnight drink.

Overall, this was the best episode of this anime if you ask me and I am absolutely enjoying watching the journey of Irina and Lev.

We got a beautiful scene last episode with the plane scene and then we got another beautiful scene this episode with the skating scene along with that wonderful song. Great episode!

That jazz bar scene, damn it Irina, you can't just hit me with that unexpected cute attack. Drunk Irina is a blessing.

Korovin, you ain't lookin too good there buddy. We got only a few weeks left till launch and all Irina needs to train now is parachuting.

I don't think going to that isolation chamber while hungover is a good idea lmao. I think she'll miss Lev while she's inside that chamber, I really love their relationship. Really looking forward to the next episode.

While it could have done with a few cut lines of dialogue - we really didn't need Lev to state outright "oh so that's why she's eager to train" - that scene at Lake Balka was genuinely excellent. Very creative use of limited animation and set pieces, as well as some properly impactful framing.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

The OST for this series is always on point.
The first track was great.

Irina is so short... and cute.
Heheh.

My, my, we're starting to get some romance.
I wonder if Lev will have any problems with the Delivery Crew in the future.
I know this isn't the series' main line... but I'd like a bit more politics (bureaucracy).

A bit of fan service, innit?

When is this anime set?
She said she was three when her parents died in the war (WWII, I assume).
She's 17, so it was 14 years prior to this series.
Germany had already lost its grip on Russia in 1944, so at most this anime can only be aired up to 1957 (43+14).
Laika was lauched in that same year. Even so, I don't remember if they told us how much time had passed between the dog in the series (Maly) and this current setting.

...

Ah, according to the first episode, it's 1960. But the numbers don't match.
If Irina is 17 years old and her parents died 14 years before, in 1946... What happened?
The war ended in Sept. 1945, and by then no German troops remained in Russia.

Welp, I wonder if it'll get explained in the next episode.
If not, it'll bother me forever.

Nevertheless, it was a good episode, overall.

In the first episode they explicitly stated that the war ended in that date.

Yes, though we might see even more differences down the road.

Lake scene was disappointing, no? Male MC seemed to me like he was Ok with Irina being just an "object". He seemed like "well, it's her dream to be a cosmonaut and she doesn't expect to survive, so if she dies (even after returning back alive), I'll be fine..."

-_- This was my expression.

that Irina dance on the lake was majestic..
there were some weird poses , unnatural one's... but maybe because she's a vampire her body is flexible like that?
I did LOVED the music in the background.. that jazz music.. Although..
"My Beloved" is sung by a japenis singer.. and its actually pretty recent.. 2017..

so props the studio for choosing a song that gave the vibes of jazz from almost a century back..

Lev recognized Irina's resolve and understood because he feels the same way about going to the moon. Irina doesn't care about how she's treated she just wants to go. Lev can't forcefully change people's opinions about Irina so the best thing he can do is support her which he says.

What would you prefer his reaction to be?
