This an example of how dangerous witches can be in this show and how far they go to seek revenge.

As usual though, Guideau is hyped up for her fight but also, this episode didn't waste time into giving showing more of her aggressive personality. Seems she doesn't back down from anyone no matter what she's facing.

Seeing Rueben's head being smashed right in front of Keira was unbelievably brutal. Love it.

While the count of victims in the "Witch's Pastime Case" continued to rise, a sudden appearance of a witch confronted Guideau and Ashaf, initiating an immediate battle. Realizing they were being pursued by the witch, Guideau and Ashaf sought information from Haines. Haines, unveiling her tragic history, disclosed that the witch had targeted individuals dear to her. Once again, they received a forewarning from the witch. To unveil the identity of the witch, Ashaf commenced devising a strategic plan.

Maybe part of why it didn't hit me emotionally was because we didn't know much about Keira's relationship with her kids. So when the twist came that they were the killers all along, it didn't have the emotional impact I expected. On a lighter note, I do like the dynamic between Ashaf and Guideau. It's interesting how Ashaf stays cool, just smoking, while Guideau is all about cursing, eating, and getting physical. It's this weirdly balanced yet captivating mix.

Yet another 'witch' dealt with. I wonder if Guideau will ever come face-to-face with another witch, or if Ashaf will just keep weaving her web of stories.

I must say that those cases are going rather briskly, aren't they. Witch does something, they came in, punch the ever living shit out of the witch ... and then they move on to the next one.

And i guess sometimes witches are not actually witches eh.

As a manga reader I am quite satisfied with how things got wrapped up this episode, it showcased how smart Ashaf is and that Guideau doesn't need her beast form to kick ass, unless up against someone as powerful as a witch. Also a nice lead up to the fact that the prejudice against witches gets blown way out of proportion by society sometime and abused by some people to cover up despicable use of magic by framing it as something a witch did. I also enjoyed this episode a lot more then the first two in terms of how consistent the animation quality was and now have high hopes for the introduction of my favourite character and her faithful companion next week.

Am I the only one or it feels like the OP is longer than usual. I mean, it's still 1:30 like all other OPs, but when you think it's ended, it keeps on going.

2:29 In Japanese she actually says "Four in the morning, two at noon, three at night". CR subs should be correct.
I just checked, there wasn't any censoring, the body wasn't fully shown in the manga either.
Poor policemen, being killed left and right like they're some mobs.
Oh wait, they aren't real, thank god.
くそったれ (kusottare) is Guideau's favorite word I see. Also how do you get "Guideau" from "Gido". Just a more stylized spelling I guess.
Well, the fact that they are adopted makes it a bit less weird I guesssss
Kiera's life is pain. But I hope she appears more later in the story.
Nice episode.

Another good episode and I was not expecting the twist at the end.

Ashaf and Guideau continues to investigate the "Witch's Pastime Case" and after parting ways with Kiera, they get attacked from the Witch. Afterwards, they go to Kiera and tell her that the Witch is following her and ask her how she is connected to the Witch. Kiera reveals her backstory and we find out that the Witch targets people close to her.

The Witch then appears at the Police Station a couple days later but Ashaf has a plan and they are able to get rid of the "Witch."

“You were too young to be our mother, we could only see you as a woman” AYOOO what the fuck. I think this is the first time I’ve seen the yandere trope on a mother/child dynamic before. Usually that’s reserved for oneechans or oniichans lmao. This was an insane episode and a twist I didn’t see coming.

So I guess the bait and switch that Aschaf pulled last week came back again. There’s no witch.. but still an important episode for lore and world building. We now know that rumoured can damn near be just as dangerous as witches themselves. I don’t think it was explicitly stated, but I also think the grimoires can play on people’s negative emotions, amplify them and select users based on that. For example the boys having a crush on their adopted mom and not wanting anyone near her.

The episode kind of hinted to the twist at the beginning now that I think about it. When they’re in the car talking about how witches can past abilities down thru descendants and then all the talk Kiera was doing about her sons. One thing I’m confused on is why would the boys have been writing about not finding an heir. Was there an actual witch before them or is there another witch out there? Or was that just them trying to throw off the police investigation 🤔

In the end, considering the stuff they’d done, the boys got the only possible end they could. I’m surprised Kiera was the one able to do it though. Even though she didn’t birth them, she was still their legal mom and loved them.. so to kill your kids like that had to have taken so much out of her. She seems to be holding up as well as you could hope.. looking forward to where this story goes next. Lot of cool twists and turns in this dark world.

A proper twist, nice.

Mums will be mums even if they're not the real thing.

Guideau and Ashaf knew that the boys were rotten from the start, the grimoires were just attracted to that.

An amazing twist to the Witch's Pastime Case turns out to be Kiera's adopted sons that she thought died in the fire. The two boys were cursed with using the forbidden items called Grimoires that forced them to kill as a way of offering sacrifices. Using the Grimoires took a toll them making it easier for Guideau to beat them up once they were cornered. They finally confessed that they were in love with their adopted mother and were jealous of Kiera's boyfriend Reuben as they were forced to kill him too. I wasn't expecting Kiera to kill her adopted sons, but it was better than having them being consumed by the Grimoires.

Next week, is Beauty and Death.

The sons being the killers isn't too shocking, certainly wasn't expecting it, but nothing too extraordinary for a show, but what got me detached from the end was the very quick resolution to it all, and the weird circumstances surrounding it. The backstory was briefly touched upon, but not enough time or depth to really make me invested enough to give a shit.

For all the talk about the so called "poor productions values", it's the dubious writing that's letting it down for me anyway lol, it was the same with the first witch.

Interesting conclusion, but I feel the story could have been told better.

The detective lady's personal connection to the case was suggested, established, and resolved in a single episode, so I did not really care much in the end when she had to take out the culprits herself. Even the escalation of the case and the investigation process felt very quick, like I was watching a CliffNotes version, especially compared to the previous episode. The pace also hurt the moody atmosphere of the nighttime city streets and grotesque murders.

I still thought it was a good concept, but maybe they should've covered this story over 3 episodes instead of 2, to make it really moody and sickening.

At least the art and animation quality is growing on me.

That was a crazy twist, literally. Gotta give this series props for featuring such an unconventional mother-children relationship and not wussing out with a happy ending. Cool premise on paper.

I agree with Gakuto above that the conflict should've been fleshed out much more to make it hit different. Felt like something that would've benefitted from being a three or four parter.

The latter, I think. The detective lady mentions that the "messages" are quotes from a book she used to have. Presumably the boys simply used them to manipulate their mother into investigating the witch angle.

There was no witch involved at any point, at least according Ashaf. Grimoires supposedly just "end up" before their victims/users. I guess it's possible a witch got the grimoire onto that desk for the boys to discover, but I don't think there was any evidence or hint of that in the show.

I’m surprised Kiera was the one able to do it though.

She's a cop who's seen too many bodies and been tormented by her selfish obsession with the case, staring down her lover's murderers. It kind of makes sense when I think about it, but it definitely was surprising in the moment.

I also enjoyed the story, but the way it was told was a little too rushed and messy.

Really liked this episode, this is the best so far.

Finally the mystery of the recent mass deaths was revealed. Even though it was unexpected and gave quite a strange impression. But yeah the point is it's out now so they can rest for a while.

Good job Guideau and Ashaf, two of the best combos. I like them both, and they look pretty good in this episode.

The Witch's Pastime case is not letting up, with both Ashaf and Guideau getting leads from Kiera Haines, as the witch consumes more people and leaves cryptic messages behind. But the witch tailing Haines from the start, both were essentially run on by her, which they presume that she is connected to the witch in some way. And sure indeed, it started when her house was burnt down, killing her children, then her boyfriend Reuben in targeting her after the fact. Needless to say, all her dealings ended up badly in the pursuit for revenge, which this resonates with Guideau all the more to encourage them killing the witch in her soon-to-be arrival in purple smoke.

Even if this witch isn't the one who cused Guideau, it's still a witch worth taking down, and testing their patience to see her attack patterns, pays off in their small ways to plant their trap on the witch. And it turns out that there's not one witcj, but two people operating as one...which turn out to be Haines's own sons Shulk and Loran, wielding the 2-volume dark-magic witch grimoire Sarnovosus. In a way, both sons had their situations forced on them, and Ashaf has already done his research beforehand to ensure that they have their plans set.

From an adoption to pure killing intent, the witch is definitely a fake-out in this case, and Hayden is finally saved with the forbidden grimoires taken back.

The dark secrets of the Order, Ashaf will keep weaving lies of witch sightings to keep Guideau close.

Pretty good episode IMO and poor Guideau was bamboozled into thinking that the boys were a witch. Also I didn't realize that the crows were Ashaf's familiars until this episode, that is pretty cool.

While it's tragic that Kiera's adopted sons were the culprits she was able to put an end to them, and I think that those grimoires were attracted to them because they were most likely rotten to begin with.

This was, story wise, the best episode thus far.

I am loving Ashraf's intelligence and ability to use past knowledge to help make deductions. He set a trap with the "body" bags with blood, a brilliant "checkmate" decoy idea, one instrumental to breaking the case.

Kiera's life ... was ruined, she tragically lost both her boyfriend and both adopted sons because of a forbidden Grimoire.

I wish this had better banter between Ashraf and Guideau like the trio in Undead Girl Murder Farce, but it's kind of annoying how shouty Guideau is when all she is is anger and muscles. Just hard to like.

As disturbing as the mother's story was, it was very interesting. No witch for Guideau, unfortunately :( . This time, the pacing improved. Also, it looks like this anime it's gonna have an "episodic with a central plot line" format, which suits very well mystery shows.

Uhdunno, this episode just broke what little desire I had to keep watching the show.
The story and writing had nothing to offer except misery porn, and even that could have been tolerable if the show took at least some time to offer some sort of meaningful insight into the chosen subject matter instead of, say, wasting two or so minutes reciting meaningless riddles which ultimately contribute to nothing, but alas.
(Also it's my personal peeve when anime quotes the sphinx riddle for no good reason and has character be surprised by it like it's not the most well-known anecdote in 71.46% of the world.)
The Big Plot Twist might as well had been written by Rian Johnson for how arbitrary it is and how little it contributes to the overall plot.
The superficial gratuitous violence is just boring at this point, because it carries absolutely no weight, because it's only ever performed on mostly nameless and literally faceless mob characters and has no real consequences in the story.
And Guideau is still an insufferable arrogant twat with no redeeming qualities, and I know that revenge drama leads are not supposed to be likable in the first place but damn, just throw me a bone show, give me a single thing that at least hints at a complex fascinating character behind the brash facade to help bearing with her antics, because in three episodes I haven't seen anything resembling that so far.

This Manga surely deserved a better adaptation with a director capable of giving some sort of direction. It's basically adapting scenes 1:1 from the source material with almost no effort put in binding them together, resulting in a very disjointed experience.

And while the first episode was rather decent on the animation department, these last two were really lacking. This is a wasted potential.

Between the satirical MC, the setting, the violence, and the weird morality, there really is all that I love in this anime.

I'm really curious as to how it develops. I'm not completely decided on whether certain elements are good or bad on a writing perspective, and the next episodes should give me the answers I'm looking for.

Also I read a review saying that it looked really bad, but to me it's certainly above average. A lot of anime look awful (which is perfectly understandable considering the conditions of production), but this one certainly doesn't. The action scenes aren't the best there is but they're good enough to be convincing imo.

"Thank goodness. That means we kept our losses to a minimum."

After thinking how heartless it was for them to treat non speaking uniformed cops as expendable cannon fodder it turned out they were all blood bags.. Not the warm-blooded kind, literal blood bags.

But those two brats getting wasted by their step-mom... Wow... I didn't see that coming at all! 😲

Both animation and story-wise episodes 2 & 3 were quite inferior to ep 1 I think.
