Barely three minutes passed before I instantly became irritated with yet another self-aware light novel protagonist lampshading cliches with unfunny meta humor.
Rewatching the show since it's been three years since I've last seen it and the second season is (hopefully) coming in 2020.
Still an amazing first episode. The fight animation at the end is superb and the episode is filled with great dialogues and small pieces of mystery of which we still don't know the answers to.
I'm very much looking forward to experiencing this show once again.
The beginning wasn't like the typical isekai where the MC has absolute no clue what going on, which was refreshing to see. So far I like the characters and the first half was a good introduction.
But damn. What in the world happened in the second half? I thought I was watching a different show. Pretty brutal scenes. That chick with the dark hair is scary. Without any hesitation she killed Rom, Felt, Subaru and before the first loop even Satella.
I hope they explain what it's about with these loops. Is it time travel? Or something else? This show definitely has my interest after the first longer episode.
The starting was good with Subaru in a convenient store. And I also kind of understand those cut scenes. Overall great start. The music and animations are quite good. Let's see what's happens next.
The MC is a little bit stupid... I mean my God anybody can tell that bitch is evil the way she walks in and he also hear her voice the first time she killed him
I didn't like this first episode, I thought it was fairly boring. Characters seemed bland for the most part (MC was insufferable). Even the fight scenes seemed boring. I've heard the show gets better though so I'll give it the 3 episode rule.
Is ironic how Subaru, after suddenly got teleported to a whole new world after just going to buy things in a grocery store, acted so calmly and like all of that was normal, but then when he got killed twice and revived in the same situation couldn't get what was going on. Because it looked like he got all his memories before got killed.
Is Satella her real name? I thought she gave him a fake name but, given that Satella is a "problematic person", that was very strange.
This first episode definitely caught my attention, the premise of getting revived after dying and get more opportunities to avoid that death is interesting.
Watching this for the sake of the season 2 on this year. And i think this series first impression was highly capacitated to give me a satisfaction. Damn, i must be too generous, but these are my compliment:
50 mins in the first episode? Goddamned! Subaru died twice in the first episode? Insane! How many death he must felt until the end of this series? Lmao. Poor him as a character that happened on the usual game. What an interesting story. A unique premises of Isekai ability for the MC. And, yeah, the concept of restarting, or re-zeroing the storyline was indeed an absolute great. A revolutionary concept of isekai that make Subaru felt okay as the MC for me. Okay, i am so attached for this series. Let just met for another time looping for the sake of the true route Subaru must through it.

Hide and seek is the best offline games on this fatamorgana-called-world-thing. Please comment nicely. I am newbie here.
Do the first episode was 50 minutes? Not a combined episode 1&2?
Anyways, this was very average for the first half. Nothing remarkable at all. An annoying boy. A goody two shoes elf. Blah blah.
It got better after they died that first time. Much more interesting. The lady in purple that kills everyone is annoying, too.
But the ending was great. I wondered what was up with that name she told him earlier given the cat spirit's reaction. Now we know it's some witch whose name nobody says? The elf girl finally don't act all good two shoes for once. I guess she's also either part of "them", associated with them or there's some mistaken identity. But it sure set that woman in purple off.
And this kid is too dumb, weak, and broke to be able to fix this on his own. Haha sucker! I will enjoy this if he struggles mightily and dies frequently.
I loved the first 3 episodes but the next 4 episodes, within the mansion are unbearably annoying. Does the series go back to the cool action and characters?

It does but there is a good chance that you will not like this series if you found the mansion arc to be unbearably annoying.
The show has more focus on dialogue/drama with some action buildup towards the end of the season. Otherwise it is a bad pick for action-oriented stuff.
Lol I had no idea what happen. I fell asleep when that witch appears and came back to my senses at that fight scene. That was cool and intense.
So the MC is in a loop of time huh.
I’m still not getting the story or where will this lead but I don’t want to drop it either. The fantasy world really looks fantasy I think it’s too much lmao.
Lol that's exactly what I had thought about the way this show started. 3 minutes of real life and then bam, into the fantasy world for Subaru.
As far as world fiction goes, the show has a very fantasy atmosphere to it, no surprise there. Yeah, I felt kinda sorry for him stuck in the new world. Satella's VA did a neat job at portraying her character. I think some parts felt a bit talky between her and Sabaru but whatever. The show establishes relationship dynamics before plot but it does build up. Pacing is okay, I thought worked fine for the first episode actually until it got to the darker stuff. And yeah, that's death and shit.
So Subaru is dead (again) and he gets to live agai and again. Honestly, that abiity is a curse, I'd rather die once and for all, rather then have to suffer all the time.

without going into spoilers, you've seen nothing yet, you're in for a wild ride
Just came here to say this was a top-tier first episode that really took full advantage of the hour-long runtime. Gotta say, I was hooked from the start.
1. At the start Subaru's eyes seem completely dead, after being transported a new found light has began to shine in those, bringing life to his dead life once more. It serves as a good way to introduce Subaru's personality early on, you can tell he is the type of guy who was just lost any and all motivation in living in Earth, and being transported to a new world and being given the chance start a different and more "fun" life compared to before. Of course, we know how this ends, the tropes end up getting subverted and instead of getting the fun new isekai life he hoped for, he got the opposite and much worse, it already subverts most of the infamous isekai cliches and shows that escapism and the want to start a completely new life wouldn't mean your new life would be much better.
2. This pilot episode does a great job at establishing the main characters, Subaru and "Satella". Subaru's overly eager and energetic personality "Anyone who lives like that is going to end up wasting their life away" Ironic comment coming from you Subaru, huh. Also a good job at introducing Emilia and her overly kind, actually too kind and stubborn personality.
3. That hesitation when Subaru asked her name, then answering "Satella", with Puck's face in shock, saying "You have terrible taste" Good foreshadowing.
4. "Subaru, you're the type that basically wastes your whole life, aren't you?" Nice parallel
5. Nice foreshadowing about how Emilia is much older than Subaru, by her consantly treating him like he is a kid.
"Why are you treating me like I'm younger than you again?"
"I doubt there's too many years between us"
"I don't think you'll get anywhere guessing that"
And also her using outdated old words that nobody uses anymore, it shows that she is uneducated of the current time, partly because of her living in solitude for most of her teen life, only having Puck with her and is limited to only the knowledge and words she used back when she was a child living in Elior Forest.
6, More foreshadowing about discrimantion for Half-Elves like Emilia.
7. Weird detail about the people living in the slums, just there staring at Subaru and Emilia, wonder what's their deal? A beautiful looking silver-haired girl with a nice dress seems to be bothering them. There's also the other dude who helped them find Old Man Rom's Loot House, they cut into a shot of him and Subaru staring at each other, I think it's because he saw Subaru in a wretched and dirty state since his tracksuit was quite worn out due to the incident with the thugs which made it seem like he lives in the Slums so that's why he decided to help them.
8, Subaru avoids calling her Satella, once he finally said it Emilia is shocked, another foreshadowing.
"I'll apologize if you get my insignia back"
Implying she is apologizing for giving him a fake name.
"Wait there... I'm going to... save you..." An iconic line of the series
9. Subaru aims for the knife thug first, learning from his first experience.
10. I really like the interactions between Rom and Felt.
Overall fantastic 1st episode, one of the best I've seen, it does everything a pilot episode to do, introduce the core characters, setup the plot and mysteries and the most important part, hooking the viewers and giving them a reason to keep watching. Rewatching this all over again feels really good.
Interesting tidbits of worldbuilding and foreshadowing in this episode...
•Common use of Ground Dragons for transportation
•People speak japanese but has a different written
language.
•Lugnica is the easternmost Nation
•Half-Elves are discriminated
•The wealthy and middle class live near the Main Capital
while the poor and lower class live down in the slums.
•Spirits uses a lot of mana to maintain in physical form.
•Introduction of Lesser Spirits which are spirits that
have yet to mature and become full spirits like Puck.
•Early mention of the White Whale and the Dragon.
•Introduction of a Metia, which is a device to use magic
in place of your gate.
•Establishing the curreny, like Holy Coins; With
the heads is the Divine Dragon and in tails what seems
to be a Tree, possibly Flugel's Tree.
•Old Man Rom is part of the Giant race.
•Early introducton of Divine Protections like Felt's Divine
Protection of the Wind, which are blessings given to
people that are "loved" by the world.
•Establishing the mystery surrounding the Witch of Envy, Satella.
Rewatching the series yet again, been quite some time though. After reading MT, I've just been trying out some isekai anime to see if my opinions can somewhat improve and this is one of them I'm trying.
The first episode actually wasn't as bad or boring as how I felt the last time, but this episode did have me feeling mixed about it. Some elements that I liked and found to even be good for subtle build towards the future, but some that also leave me annoyed a bit and kind of dull in certain phases only. It's not a mindblowing episode and some of the overdone nature of the series already leaves me a bit irritated with Tappei Nagatsuki's ideas, but some are having potential too. So I'll see how the rest of this season goes from now. Like Naofumi from Shield Hero, Subaru's goofy ass, carefree attitude before he experienced death and suffering for the first time was so goddamn annoying to watch, but at least he didn't change 100% compared to Naofumi which felt like a complete, unbelievable 180. So that's a positive among a negative I guess?
I watched episode 1 first I didn’t know there was an episode 0 but now that I’ve watched it it makes more sense so Subaru is in a loop and every time he dies he restarts the day
So I'm finally getting around to watching this show, I can't believe I manage to avoid it for so many years. From the looks of it, I do see what made it so popular, as cliché as it is, I hope it blossoms into something I'll appreciate.
great first episode, but dang things got dark really quickly. loved Subaru's interaction with Satella though, and got me hyped up to watch this series. that antagonist really got me angry too.
in general, isekai is probably my least favorite genre but this looks like it can be a very rare exception to that and end up being pretty great. it seems this is the gold standard for isekai though so perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise.
The Isekai genre.....I'm quite aware of how things are when it comes to Isekai. Re:Zero is my first Isekai anime since I've heard it is the best in the genre.
So we've got Subaru, your average shut in. And he gets Isekai'd (don't know if that's actually a word) into a parallel world!!! So I get the gyst, he meets a girl who calls herself Stella but I guess that's not her actual name. Anyways it seems Subaru can die and revive again. And many other stuff in this parallel world is similar to games. The animation's pretty good.
I like the plot!!! Isekai or not, the anime's awesome!! Can't wait to see the rest of the season!!!
I am watching the director’s cut version this time around. Is that listed separately? Did I watch it already, or did I watch the regular version? Idk, and Idm, because this is just so very very good. I love the balance of cute, funny, and brutally violent. Makes the episode go by fast.
