I'm digging the theming and tones (and the granny character), but this studio is honestly missing some beats. The atmosphere of the show feels really hollow, and those 'astral projection' scenes are so wacky compared to the panels in the manga

I'll stick around just because I like the story, but I might swap to the manga..

I haven't read the manga, so I don't know how much was cut, but I felt that the episode still did a good job in conveying pretty deep emotions and meaning. The MC considers both studying and socializing as work, and doesn't feel like he has truly communicated with others until his friends see his painting of Shibuya. I'm excited to see his exploration of art/painting as a means to express and find himself.

Also, I think the plain animation, background music, and pacing suit the slice of life theme better than most series I have seen. It feels relatable in the sense that everyday life is relatively plain and you don't tend to remember/think about every single thing that happens.

So you can watch this on Netflix JP because it now has English subtitles

I went in with pretty low expectations for this anime because of the staff and studio. And I’d say those low expectations have been met. The visuals are pretty mediocre to the point that it makes it harder to enjoy this. The wonkiness of the characters going constantly off model, the limited animation, and the flatness of everything…

I did read the manga. They cut out so much to fit ch.1 which is actually a little over 60 pages AND included all of ch.2 What they cut out isn’t anything super significant I guess, but it makes the pacing feel rushed.

It’s too bad, because I’ve been liking the manga, but the first episode isn’t impressive at all IMO. Hopefully things will improve as the season goes on, but I doubt it

subs...
Art sensei's cool, feels quite insightful & supportive, besides ignoring confiscating cigs.
Several characters cant tell girl boy or trap but that's the least of the issues. Pacing odd, maybe because subs. Nice there's TL notes, quite rare nowadays, but some sub blocks just make little sense or messy.
Weird & rude to badmouth others' hobbies then suddenly aim for art school in one episode. This got more attention to detail, better dialog, but ive seen several art shows already so on the fence.

The beginning was interesting, and as it is an anime about arts and paintings, I hope that the intensity of the works are well represented. The animation did not deliver what the trailers promised but remains pleasant to the eye, i will probably watch.

I feel it's going to be an objectively nice show that I won't like that much.

I do like the MC and some other chars, but I don't particularly like these kinds of do-your-best! stories- they need to be seriously amazing like Eupho or Sangatsu for me, and this was ok but not much more than that to be honest.

i love this concept (thought it may be cliche) of something like art or sports taking people away from that bad path, i’m a bit underwhelmed tho since most people say the manga is way better, i’ll probably read it after this finishes airing

It was beautiful.

As someone who has been studying art as a major (but I'm planning to study fashion design), I loved their dialogues and the explanations about art and art university. But I didn't quite like it when they kept implying that studying art only means fine arts, it's true that you won't really earn much through fine arts unless you become an art teacher or can sell your paintings at high price which are quite difficult to do. I would have liked it more if they mentioned other options that is related to art like architecture, graphic design, interior design, fashion design. Well it's just the first episode so I hope in the later episodes they explain more about the other options that one can have if they want to make art as their career.

But one thing that's been bothering me is aren't they minor to be smoking so freely? They were even about to smoke in the class and the teacher didn't say anything when she saw the packet....? I thought Japan was quite strict about such things...

After reading some of the comments, it seems like they skipped a lot of important dialogues and scenes, so I will read the manga to get the full enjoyment.

Loved the OP by Omoinotake.

That was a really good start! But I feel like it could have been a lot better in terms of visuals and directing especially for a show like this. It's still good though, it's good enough. The episode really made me want to read the manga though, which I definitely will. Leaving production aside, I think the story is great and beautiful. Looking forward for more.

Right. Finally I got to watch it on Netflix.

It was really good, seeing the art with color. I guess I have to accept that it's not a 'triple-A' level animation, but they got the story across just fine.

As a manga reader, I can see that the episode adapted about half of the first volume. With that kind of ratio some details will inevitably be skipped, so...
rEaD tHe mAnGa for a more complete experience.

With this pace, we'll probably get about 12 or 13 episodes adapting around the first 6 volumes. Let's go!

Now that is some inspiring first episode to have but the ending song was so average that it didn't complement the ending scene at all and that was such a waste! (I watched in Netflix so...)

This will be an awesome series since there's not much like these nowadays, if they won't ruin it later.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

It looks to be free of the recent Netflix "curse', it looks to be a decent adaptation which could definitely enhance the original material through its visuals. The manga is limited in color, but with the anime, one could see the paintings and other artworks brought to life.

This ep had a totally different feel from what I was expecting but I loved it. Yatora seems like a very interesting MC because he isn't a stereotype. In fact all the characters in this episode felt more 3 dimensional than most characters which gave it a realistic vibe.

Just watched the first ep and it was pretty bad. Wondered if it's just the fault of direction and it seems like it. Manga had more dialogue and therefore wasn't as confusing and bland. Also a of content has been cut. Even the animation was meh in the anime. I'll propably skip the anime and read manga sometime.

I wasn't wrong when I thought this season is going be a good season. I went in blindly, I knew the show was going to be about art, but I wasn't expecting anything like chasing your passion, and feeling torn and conflicted. The first episode spoke to me. I already like Yaguchi's arrogance and the dynamic between him and what looks like an old friend. I'm excited to see Yaguchi grow more ambitious, and make more art. The first episode definitely hyped me up for the rest of the show, and I am now very invested and engaged with the story.

The animation is average I would say, but I'm not bothered.

Since I didn't read the manga, I was able to genuinely enjoy the story. It gave me more opportunities to look at the blue sky in my daily life. I felt that the setting in which the main character was excellent was unusual. This is because in recent years there have been many stories of helpless boys struggling. I am looking forward to the future development of this story.

Okay, this is truly something special. Say all you want about the animation, but everything else about the show has got me hooked right from the beginning. The animation itself is not remarkable, but the tone and the atmosphere is surprisingly beautiful. I'm already very invested in the characters, even though it's only the first episode. Needless to say, this is going to be an emotional ride, and I honestly can't wait for it to unfold.

I must say that I have never seen an anime like Blue Period in such a form and the anime can be interesting...Let's come first to the Mc, at the beginning I had Yatora Yaguchi not so excited but I see in which direction Yatora will develop. Let's get to the main cast and in this anime the main cast consists of only 2 Charachter and once from the Mc Yatora Yaguchi and Ryuuji Ayukawa. So far I have no opinion about it(was also only the first episode bruh).Side Charachter also no opinion xD,one has not seen so far. The story could be quite interesting and the plot has not been seen yet.

Conclusion: The anime could be quite Interessnt, but it was only the first episode so you can only give a first impression and not properly evaluate it xD.
I give the first episode a 3/5

The art of the manga is hard to replicate so I was surprised that this was going to be adapted as an anime, and didn't have high expectation. The visual turned out fine, I think it was just lacking in the animation - the movements felt stiff. But I think they got the atmosphere right, it reminds me about early Yatora and the time I got hooked into this story, and that's nice.

Was not expecting this series to HIT ME the way that it did. When I was determining my path as a teen I had a lot of similar conversations with the adults in my life, but suppressed those desires and trudged forward into business school instead.

A little concerned this series is going to destroy the confidence I've had in that choice for the last 8 years...

They got the feeling of making art so right... And they hit the nail with the feelings of doubt and uncertainty about pursuing a carrer in arts. I often times felt the same things when I was in highschool, but with writing. It often felt like it was useless, and like no one would ever want to read anything I write, which made me keep my hobby just like that, a hobby... I gave up on that dream of being a writer, but it's so satisfying seeing youger people try their best to achieve their dreams, living a life worth living.

The animation was top-notch, and the soundtrack gave me chills. Can't wait for the next episodes!

A lot of these reviews are by manga readers so here you have one coming from an anime-only watcher.

I never heard anything about this show prior to it being annonced to be an anime for this season. All I knew was that it revolves around drawing and painting. Art stuff you know?
So I went in with no real expectations.

Other people on here say that this episode (or the ones to follow) were rushed. That the visuals weren't up to par and all that. Though I just have to disagree here. Never reading the manga before the anime, I watched the episode and didn't get the sense of it being rushed at all. Ep.2 had a small moment like that but that's something to talk about in another review. I started liking the MC pretty quickly. His design and voice actor really make him stand out and capture his personality really well. It's not a 10/10 episode but it does it's job of quickly introducing the main cast as well as the MC's goals and ambitions.

Give this show a chance and it will definitely make you want to pick up your pencil and brush and start creating art just like Haikyuu does with Volleyball and Jojo does with making you want to do weird poses whenever you get the chance LMAO

Wow, a really inspiring first episode.
As an artist who struggles a lot with not having the confidence of just pure motivation to make anything at times this was a very refreshing first episode. The dialogue among the characters (especially the art teacher and protag) was so perfect for me. I cannot wait to see how this plays out.
Also the relationship between protag and the black haired upperclassmen is something I'm looking forward to see more of.

Oya oya, an anime that might convince me to delve into arts...it will try hard but I'm liking its moves so far.

Blue Period, watched it on a whim in the Net with Flix and from what I'm seeing yeah it really is a very good anime. I see some of myself in Yatora our MC. Torn on what to do with his life, sailing along with time, and though praised by others, he's not fond or rather he feels empty of what he does "best". But when that push of inspiration piques his interest, he found himself with a thing to do and would later be his calling.

I really like the way they present his sudden drive to paint, it feels so natural and it kinda made me interested myself to do something myself (that hasn't happened though). The blue painting that Yatora did was really neat, and the sketches that he made after....god I'm so jealous now I feel how some of my friends draw. And yo Erina the God's Tongue is here...oh she's not well lol.

Yuka Ayukawa really looks like her though, even their eye color are the same. But looks aside, I think them....(yea I know) and Yatora's exchanges are hella nice. I think sh- they will be a nice friend with our MC, and I can already sense the R34 drawings being made some long ass distance away.

Wow this anime surprised me, and hey if this anime convinced some to start drawing for themselves, then that's saying something. The OP bops too, so yeah I'm onboard with this!

why the female character on mal is written as they? It's very confusing to read as they when clearly she doesn't say anything about identiy politics. I am only asking because the boy is "him"... so, is this something that happen later ?

The protagonist refers to her as though she underwent sex change surgery. He mentions they had a pretty face even "before" and stuff. I'm oblivious to gender politics, so I have no ideia why the use of "they", though.

Finally been able to watch the first episode. This is the first time I see an anime adapted after reading the manga (the first 7 chapters for now, but still ahead considering this episode adapt the first 2), and I am happy to try this experience.
As a manga reader, I felt the pacing pretty rushed, because there is not the same graduality of Yatora falling in love with art as in the manga, and some scenes weren't as impactful. In general this first episode didn't gave me the same feelings as the first two chapters of the source material did.
I guess this was in part inevitable considering the adaptation needs, like putting some plot points soon to get the audience caught, so I won't be too harsh on this.
Many pros and cons, but overall it's still a pretty good adaptation, character designs are faithful, most of the voices fits the characters and some important dialogues and phrases were mantained. I am curious and enthusiast about how it will proceed.

So, I think that this anime will bring a great discussion about people's vocation and the difficulties they have to achieve it, like peer pressure and high costs of education. This anime puts us thinking about what we desire and if we're doing something to achieve it. We need to think about that, it's an important subject.

Decent start. Lots of room for our main character to grow and maybe even reach the DREADED art plateau which is a whole other monster to overcome. Or at least for me I sometimes go through a weird phase where my art actually straight up gets worse or at least harder to look at (read: ugly af). I'll see where main character goes-- yep, totally can't remember his name. Hopefully by next episode. Somehow I remember Saeko and Yuka's names, but not his. lol

I really liked it, very nice. I'm surprised so many people have taken issue with the production, it felt fine to me.

True, there is not a lot of exaggeration for an 'artistic' show but for me the draw of the show was more in the dialogue than the visual presentation of the art itself. I really liked the protagonist and watching him discover something he thought he'd never had a passion for was really nice. The monologues were well placed and there was emotion throughout the discovery especially towards the end when he began to recognize the passion and seek guidance. Maybe it's just the general theme that resonates with me but I think it more than makes up for a presentation that lacks 'flair'. Sounds like most people kinda wanted presentation similar to Eizouken or something? Maybe I'd have a different impression if I had read the manga.

Definitely gonna continue watching this, very interested in how it'll go.

True passion
A reality of many, putting of their true passions for the "safe" path. We can see the chaotic revolution of thought that the blue Shybuya painting caused in the main caharacter. I can describe it as inspirig and eye opening for now.

"But I've never felt more so alive until I made that blue painting", so said Yatora Yaguchi, the main lead of the show. I think that's a sentence that sums up the first episode of the show and hints where it is going next.

Yatora Yaguchi is a second-year high school student who is not true to himself; one who is afraid to follow his heart and passion. He appears to be a 'latent artist' who never acted upon his hidden passion for a variety of reasons. In the first episode the dormant, self-suppressed artist inside him starts to 'awaken' though.

And the catalysts for that were the art club members, the advice of his art teacher and the cold blue-ish beauty of Shibuya at the crack of dawn, a beauty only he appeared to be able to see. That led to the above 'blue painting' and to his eventual decision to go to an art school. He chose the sole public art school in Japan which however has an extremely low 0.5% acceptance rate per year. Will he make it or not?

The animation of the show, ironically for an art anime, is not very elaborate. The characters are somewhat simple but at least they are clean and well-drawn. Their looks more than get the job done but their movement could have been a bit more natural and organic. I suspect the director wanted to invest more time and energy on the background art and paintings of the show, since it is art focused, and had to prioritize. The background art was fine but the first episode only had a couple of paintings, so I'll comment on those later.

As for the plot I loved the premise and cannot wait to watch the next episodes. Perhaps I'm biased, since I've had a similar 'awakening' to Yatora Yaguchi but for literature, not art. So be it. I do not yet know the other characters well so I'll also comment on those later.

That was quite amazing. I had high expectations, but boy did it meet them. Sometimes the animation feels stiff, but that just might be personal, subjective preferences. I think I'll get used to it.

But the feel and the subject matter are amazing. I'm not someone who's knowledgeable in art at all. Not even someone likes to draw. But that was really interesting, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more. If there's no season 2 announcement by the end of the airing period, I'm definitely reading the manga.

And I love the cool, artistic, jazz-y vibe.

Not a manga reader but, the pacing in the first half was too much, thankfully, they slowed down in the 2nd half of the episode by a bit. From the production standpoint, it's really average and considering it's only the first episode, that pretty much tells you how the future episodes are going to work out although the painting was shown well with the green tint. The story here is definitely intriguing but with fast pacing like that, it becomes difficult to bring out the full potential that the writing can achieve. Another problem is how the directing isn't helping the anime in anyway, making it feel like it's jumping from one scene to another. The use of the osts in all the moments were correct however, they are not strong enough to elevate the scenes in any way. My favorite thing in the episode was how the characters act, don't remember the last time where I liked most of the characters present in the first episode of an anime. Very much excited to see where it goes from here and hopefully, the pacing would be fixed for the future episodes.
