This was absolutely stunning!! Right in the feels, I hope this show will make us left in tears!

And Tsuda-san's sexy narrator voice. I'm in love!! Not to mention that his voice and the wintery snowy setting give some Golden Kamuy feel, not to mention the white wolf as well. Are the people migrating from Sakhalin to Hokkaido? And some little girl is coming up next episode, there comes a new Asirpa!

Can't wait to know how the story will continue.

Oh man that was sad as hell. Wtf, the boy died like that, he always tried to be cheerful and optimistic and took care of Joaan till the end but he had to die like that without experiencing all the things he wanted. He thought everyone would return but they didnt and it breaks my heart.

So after taking the form of the wolf, it now took the form of the boy. It will probably start living all the experiences the boy wanted in the journey that will follow.

It's sad that the boy and the wolf won't be the duo in the story, I liked their dynamic in ths episode. Premiere of the season if you ask me. The main character's VA was great too, it was an amazing debut for him.

The visuals from Brains Base weren't the greatest and there were the obvious tearjerker signs that were present in the manga too for predictability, but at least the content and the atmosphere was so well handled and the setting and Fushi was so interesting to watch, that those didn't even deter from my enjoyment compared to A Silent Voice which I hated with a burning passion. This is probably the best premiere of the season, might be one of the best anime of the year too. I've read the manga but my memory is extremely limited so this is refreshing. Might buy all the volumes too and reread from there.

Wow, I loved this start!
I'm sure it will be one of the best of this season
I've almost cried with the first episode, who knows what to expect in the following ones (´-ω-`( _ _ )
I haven't read the manga, but it seems that they have adapted it great, good job NHK!

It was really a nice-looking premiere, and the animation aesthetics is quite nice, even though for some here it may look derp (which is kinda typical for most of Brain Base's works).

Having previously read the source material, though, and not being a fan of the recent events or its way of emotional manipulation (I felt Silent Voice's similar-looking composition was balanced a lot better, personally.), I'm mostly indifferent but with at least some more positives to it. The OST is quite nice, too, I guess.

This was my most anticipated anime of this season, and so far it's living up to my expectations. What a hauntingly beautiful episode this was. I legit almost cried near the end. The animation and backgrounds look fucking gorgeous and the story seems very engaging. I also really loved the worldbuilding in this episode as well. Considering that this is from the same writer as A Silent Voice, we're definitely in for a treat.

After much delay and anticipation, I've finally been able to watch this adaptation, and I'm throughly pleased so far! I remember how much the manga's first chapter impacted me, and I was nervous that the first episode wouldn't be able to convey that same level of emotion. Thankfully, it pulled through, and I definitely teared up during the last third of this episode, even though I already knew what would happen. It's been a very long time since an anime has been able to get tears out of me!

The music fit so well, and the animation quality was high enough. Definitely appreciated how Brain's Base made sure to include more details during those key emotional moments.

I'm looking forward to seeing the OP and ED next episode! Get ready for March and Parona!!

Yooo I hope it isn't gonna force drama on the viewer so much all the time man, the story is dramatic enough in itself no need for so much violins bro stop playing your instrument

All in all, too much pathos, would have preferred less music in that first ep

“Read as little as possible of critical or aesthetic works. They are either products of a close-minded spirit, petrified and devoid of meaning in their lifeless hardening, or clever verbal games [...]. Works of art are of an infinite solitude; nothing is worse than criticism for approaching them. Only love can grasp them, keep them, be just toward them. Always give precedence to your own feeling against these analyses, these reviews, these introductions. [...] You must let every impression, every seed of feeling, ripen within you, in the dark, in the inexpressible, in the unconscious, those regions closed to understanding. Wait with humility and patience for the hour of the birth of a new clarity. Art demands of its faithful followers as much as of its creators.”

It broke me even more than I've anticipated :,)
I haven't read the manga, so everything is very fresh to me. Loved the fact they've dedicated the whole ep to show Its story with the boy, and how It learned about life and what it means to be human with him. The message is beautiful as well, as the orb carries the dreams of those who passed away, and keeps learning the meaning of life with them. The soundtrack was amazing, and I loved the art as well. Probably my favorite show this far.

Great first episode. This is shaping up to be a pretty faithful adaptation and what I'd imagine the manga would look like as an anime. If they can keep this up this has a great shot as AOTS.

(ENG) I have been waiting for animation for a long time. It has a very smooth and good animation.
This part of the story always breaks my heart and I hope it is a well received anime, the story is incredible and deserves more recognition than it has.

(ESP) He estado esperando la animación por muchísimo tiempo. Tiene una animación muy suave y buena.
Esta parte de la historia sempre me rompe el corazón y espero que sea un anime bien recibido, la historia es increíble y merece más reconocimiento del que tiene.

That was definitely a sad episode. It looks incredibly faithful to the manga, not rushed, pretty good pacing. The art was a bit bad for a few seconds at one point, but the rest of it is really good and I love the atmosphere of Fumetsu and the adventuring aspect.
The range of music is only going to make it even better.
Seeing the Nameless Boy so happy, aah that felt good, it also made it a whole lot more upsetting for how positive he was.

This episode tugged at my heartstrings the right way. Even if I didn't get overly emotional, I definitely felt something. Every shot of Joaan looking worried was blow low, to be honest :v

I loved the atmosphere and the bgm, the story came with a bang from episode 1. I had been keeping an eye out for it for a while now, the delays were worth it going in blind. I'll be looking out for the next episodes for sure.

Very good episode, leaves nothing unexplained

I would have liked a better opening theme, or is it the closing one?

Just to clarify since I'm not Japanese, the stones that the nameless boy found are tombs, right?

Looking forward to the next chapter

I went into this completely blind and came out very impressed. It both left me satisfied with how the premise was set up and wondering a lot about what the MC will do from here on out. Hopefully this type of quality is continued throughout the rest of the season.

Certainly an unorthodox setting and an interesting concept for a story. I like how it kinda starts out like one of those "wild kid and his animal" types of Hollywood setting yet becomes something quite different so quickly

Only time will tell if the actual overarching direction of the story can keep up with its own potential though but so far so good at least

Probably the most meaningful and impactful show this season. This episode was truly amazing. The soundtracks and the animation are just breathtaking. I can already feel chills down my spine. This show is definitely going to be an emotional rollercoaster for me. I can already feel tears. The boy's death hit me so hard.

And he set to a journey.. just as the boy wanted.
This is just as sad as when i first read the manga! Looks promising! I feeel my heart still crying inside. The psychological state of the boy's mind represented in how he talks to the wolf is as genius as ever.
Look forward more sadness everyone!

I'm fucking hooked already. This is an absolute masterpiece of a first episode. I haven't seen a first episode this spectacular since Made in Abyss.

The direction is pretty great. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the two characters we have so far are very engaging. The music fits so well with the show and overall tone of the first episode. I cannot find a single thing in this episode that I can say is underwhelming or a missed opportunity. The episode really pulls on my heartstrings very effectively in its third act even though we only known the characters for 15 minutes and it doesn't feel cheap whatsoever, it feels earned, pretty profound stuff I have to say.

Easy 5/5, potentially THE gem of the season but we will have to see if the next few episodes hold the same level of quality as this one. I came into this show completely blind and it surprised me SO hard.

I wasn't sure if my heart could take seeing the prologue animated. Turns out, it couldn't. I had started reading it back in 2018, but after 2 volumes took an indefinite break for some reason. Recently I decided to re-read from scratch to enjoy the adaptation more thoroughly. Knowledge of the source material really puts into perspective one's appreciation for anime as a medium.

Got massive The Thing vibes with that honestly, and it was beautifully told. The poor boy. A real shame. But the production from the themes, the animation, to the music. It was all well delivered, and can't wait for more.

"My name is..." Damn, the anime really made me relive the pain of never even getting to know the boy's name.

I'd dare say that the first episode hit me even more than the first chapter. I haven't cried like that watching an anime in a long long time. Guess it was a good day for a rain.

Great first episode!

If I had to be critical and nitpicks, the visuals were inconsistent at times. From looking really good, to the characters looking really dopey. Especially the wolf. It’s design kinda bothers me with how goofy it looked at times.

Also, everything was so melodramatic, with the boy being so cheerful when it was totally predictable things were going to end badly. So I felt sad but also wanted to roll my eyes at the same time with how over the top it was.

So That orb is basically like “The Thing” monster, but not evil. It can’t kill people to take over their bodies.
With 20 episodes, I wonder if the story will stay with this boy whole time, or if the orb will take on the form of other characters who die. Maybe I’ll read the manga. Although I’ve heard some say they dropped the manga because of the direction the story starts to take. If the manga does start to get bad, hopefully the anime will cover the best parts
