Tooru purifies my soul ❤. I love her.
I liked the analogy he used with the plums to explain the jealousy and virtues of the people 👏. That girl is special.

Regarding the end, Tooru thought at that moment "What do I see? A rival?" LOL 😂.

Battle Rice Balls! Beat each other up! Only rule is no killing! YES!

Yuki hitting Kyo with that Sweet Chin Music...

Kyo's got a cat's tongue...

"We are jealous of others because we can see the plums on their backs but not on our own." Quotable...

Forget Tohru, let's just ship Yuki and Kyo together!

I wasn’t originally fond of Yuki in the 2001 version but watching the reboot, the boy just kinda grew on me. One of the reasons why I also picked up the manga this late. It’s wonderful to see how kindness can actually help a person. If only things would work out the same way in reality. The world would be a much better place. Tohru is a blessing to everyone.

I wasn't expecting to see Momiji this soon, I think Kagura came around this time but I don't remember since it's been a while since the last time I saw the original or read the manga.

This episode had lots of feels. I think the seiyuu cast is doing a good job bringing emotion to these characters.

Yuki walking next to Tohru on the bridge in rat form was absolutely adorable.

I forgot that the Chinese Zodiac has a dragon and a pig. So, I wonder if there is a dragon in their family.

Are there any females in the Souma family? Really curious.

The blond boy was creepy. Who kisses a stranger like that!?

The girl at the end was super creepy. She actually reached someone's home!

This seems like a normal romance story and I don't know where it is going to head. The supernatural parts seem quite unnecessary so far. But this is still too early to judge.

--Yes, there is a "dragon"

--Yes, there are females

--Don't judge the little blond boy just yet

And the "supernatural" parts are there for a reason. I beg everyone... give it time. It will all begin to make sense and be BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I'm so excited about this redo, as the original Fruits Basket is one of the first 3 series I ever watched. I almost tear up week to week seeing this brought back to life. :D

For starters Kyo is an uninvited guest at the Sohma's house, he has no right to complain about the food or be rude towards Tohru, specially since Tohru worked so hard to prepare all that food. Add that Kyo & Yuki don't like to be around each other, they just notice the good points of each other, but they play the rival card too well, so there's no need for etiquette from Yuki to pamper his rival who happens to be just a smooch at his own house more frequently.

Kyou was part of the deal made between Shigure and Akito, so no, he isn't an "uninvited guest", he lives there as well. Also, it isn't like he spat in a meal made by Tooru while calling her names. She was just practicing with the onigiris for the school festival and he was unlucky enough to get one with a filling he doesn't like. He wasn't rude and she didn't even mind it.

And if by "pamper" you mean "treat with basic respect and cordiality" like he treats even strangers with, then yes, Yuki should start to "pamper" his rival. Or simply leave him alone like Kyou leaves him when he isn't looking for a fight. And "mooch"? Please, Yuki doesn't even work, and he doesn't own the house or the land either. He is "mooching" as much as Kyou, what a wild thing for teenagers to do.

The "deal" is pretty much a sham just to amuse Akito. If Akito would have said NO from the beginning it would have been a decisive, no questions asked, and suck it up. He's just allowing him to live there, going from the status of an uninvited guest that dropped in for a match against Yuki to just a simple guest that still has to obey by house rules. And again, you completely ignored my point that he's not part of the Sohma family or part of the 12 zodiac junishi, he's an outsider mooching on a "family" residence without contributing anything. And of course he was fucking rude by claiming he doesn't like leek in such a loud manner and claim how does dare Tohru to cook something like that, he could have been more subtle and humble instead of being his normal loud and obnoxious self. You just don't want to see that he's actually rude (probably never had guests in your own house or you're just too permissible and allow guests and strangers to talk shit about your own house) just because it was in Tohru's nature to ignore these rude comments and interactions, (and this is a key signature fo her) doesn't mean it's ok and that Kyo wasn't rude. Tohru has been defended by Yuki, Hana & Uo from rude people and it will be quite a recurrent theme for future arcs too.

Edit: also take into account, those leeks are from Yuki's farm patch. That's his secret base, wich most likely he tried farming as a way to keep his mind off of Akito's long reach. Yuki took a lot of effort to grow those and keep them alive from Typhoons like the one from last night, on wich also Tohru helped out. He's got more than enough reasons as a producer and Tohru's friend to shove it on Kyo's mouth on calling them unedible.

This reminds me a lot of the cannoli incident in "Everybody loves Raymond"

Kyo doesn't deserve respect from Yuki at this stage, he's a mooch under the rival trope. Yuki treats Kyo with the deserving respect when he's not doing something stupid or annoying to Tohru or other people around (either school mates or at Shigure's house). Its the most basic talk shit get hit condition Kyo deserves at the moment.

Just because Yuki doesn't work, doesn't mean he's mooching by living in a house Akito asigned specifically for him. It would be the equivalent of a teenager studying far from home on a payed apartment by his/her folks.

I really liked this episode! Although I do agree with this:

Kimurah said:
Once again, the 2001 adaptation comes ahead of the remake.

The umeboshi scene resonates way stronger in the old Fruits Basket, because even though the people Tohru is talking about are still represented by onigiri, each one has a face with different expressions, something the remake show with a shot of different people looked at them from the back.

Despite that, I really enjoyed it. I don't think they'll skip chapters, Momiji just made a cameo appearence, since Kaguya showed up they'll focus on her manga pages and then in the festival.

Also, I know a lot of people think Momiji's german is awful but he's a japanese VA, and some languages are just too hard to pronounce for the rest! So don't be so harsh please :)
Personally I'm glad we saw Momiji now even though it's different from the manga since he's my favorite character of all the series. I do miss the old VA he had in the 2001 version but i'm sure his new VA will do a great job since the entire cast has been doing an amazing job so far.

To be fair, I understand Yuki's stance toward Kyo. He wants, as much as he can, to distance himself from the Sohmas, and Kyo won't ever leave him alone. Every day Kyo dogs him, looking for a fight and Yuki really wants nothing to do with it. "Having to deal with that is my annoyance. My misfortune."

One thing they unfortunately left out of this version was the bit where, after Yuki roundhouse kicks Kyo and leaves the classroom, Kyo muses that Yuki must be in a bad mood, because he hit him harder than usual today... then goes on to say, "That means every other time, he's been holding back! That condescending bastard!" Rather than appreciating it, Kyo takes Yuki's consideration as an insult. We even saw in the previous episode, Yuki just looks at Kyo over the dinner table, and Kyo takes offense. Yuki can't win; whatever he does, Kyo will rage.

Don't get me wrong, I adore my cat boy just as much as my rat son. But Yuki's dislike of Kyo is fully earned lol. As Shigure said, Kyo needs to learn how to properly deal with people, and with Yuki in particular.

I understand what you mean but when you really think about it, isn't that what makes her NOT bland. Like how often do you find someone as nice as her? It's extremely hard to be so nice and understanding.

Eh, that describes most protagonists. The ol' "maybe I'm not anything special but at least I have a big heart" MC has been done over and over again. Those are the characters that sort of feel like "self-insert" characters.

Huh, they introduced Momiji early...If I recall he was introduced in like chapter 6 (maybe 7). It does work given that Tohru was leaving work at that part with nothing happening before that.

Also don't recall Kyo disliking Chives, although the subtitle said the riceball was "leek" flavor, which would of been correct, so it could of been a translation error.

I think I'll just need to correct this one,
Kyou were part of the Soma's family. Not an outsider like Tohru.

The part about him being "outsider" is because he's not part of the zodiac's and the god. But he's legally still a Soma.

The Soma's family were not a small one, there's even those who didn't know a single clue about this curse inside their family just because they branched off to far. And...

And if my memory were right, it's about the cat's traits. They said leek were bad for them.

I won't argue about Kyo being rude and all, but as the stories goes, he will get better. Even thought still an idiot...

After watching this ep, I rewatched the first several eps of the old version.
It’s obvious that the pacing of the original one is way better. But then again, it’s always super hard for remake to improve especially when the original version is beloved by lots of fans. I can see that the remake is aiming for a gentle & soft way of storytelling with a more beautiful art style.
Not sure if the adjustments of bringing forward some later scenes work well or not, still looking forward to the whole series tho.

Tooru calls Yuki ''Souma-kun'' in the beginning, she switches to ''Yuki-kun'' later
She calls Shigure and Kyou and other Souma people by their name because she can't call all of them Souma-kun/san, it would be confusing. Yuki was the first one she knew from long ago because he was in her class, but she wasn't close with him, so she called him by his family name and not his given name, and she continues that now that they are friends, probably out of habit.

I wasn't expecting to see best boi Momiji so soon! I guess it makes sense to sneak him in where they did. I'm hype for the school festival now.

I agree with others here, Yuki is standing out more. As much as I loove Kyo, I'm not sure if his moments with Tohru here are as emotional as they should be. Some things I wish they would have done differently or exaggerated a little more, like the plum analogy and Kyo's embarrassment was a bit lacking to me.

Tohru continues to have a strong heart despite all the misfortunes in her life - and it's not just being nice for the sake of it, it's something she's practiced because of how awesome her mom did in raising her. She's ALWAYS thinking about her mom and finding strength in that, but we can still see how much tragedy affects her. That's something we should all be looking up to, cos how many of us can honestly say we'd be that strong if we were in her shoes.

This episode was full of deep and interesting quotes from Tohru. Lot’s of rivalries between the mouse and cat once again.. I cheer for the mouse tho... the cat annoys me. Or perhaps its just the fact how they all have pet animal characteristics while being humans. I don’t really like that. Well I guess let’s just see how next episode plays out...

Really hits home about people being nice just to be seen as a good person (personally guilty of this for sure). Tohru is just so wholesome, especially with that analogy about plums on peoples' backs.

Yuki clearly seems to be the most obvious ship still. Still looking forward to her chemistry with the other guys, and now we see another one has been introduced. Wonder how the language barrier will play out with him speaking German (or perhaps he still knows Japanese).

the plum analogy is the first of my "favorites dialogues" to happen in the series (I have lots of those, XD... looking forward to see some of them animated for the first time ).
love how Tohru is talking about Kyo and Yuki's good traits and how they don't notice their own qualities, and Kyo "throws back" at her, showing that, she also have qualities that maybe she isn't noticing

anyway, the pace is a little faster than the original, but for now, don't seems to be a problem (personally, I want to see the "new" parts soon too... so, so far so good, XD )

hope Momiji sounds less awkward talking japanese, XD

According to the manga, they only transform from illness/weakness or "embracing" the opposite gender, which seems to be defined as arms wrapped around the torso. Simply touching someone won't cause them to transform.

Ah! Momiji and Kagura! What cuties!

This episode seemed a little all over the place, though, which is sad to see considering the other two episodes flowed really nicely. Hopefully, they'll be able to tie it all together quite neatly, though.

Lovely analogies, but I agree with those saying that the analogies and the onigiri scene were better in the original series. Nothing particularly wrong with this adaptation of it in my eyes, but the reactions in the original just seems more comedic? 'Comedic' isn't the word I want to use, really, but it'll do for now. (EDIT: 'Impactful'. There you go. That's what I was meaning to say.)

Kyo and Yuki are definitely more likable in this series too. It's becoming a lovely little watch each week. I look forward to the next episode to see if they do actually tie everything together.
