dang! pool scene, gorgeous girls in swimsuit specially Reina and Asuka, omg my eyes O_O Anyway good episode, got more backstory about the issue from Nozomi and Natsuki. Satami and Taki-sensei conversation made Reina jealous. That Reina dead eyes was hilarious indeed. I like the conversation between Reina and Kumiko, it was sweet and cute. Seems like next episode will be intense, Kumiko gonna ask Asuka about Nozomi's joining back to the club, looking forward to it. |

Enough joking around... no, not really. I would love to point out the role reversal during that cute bit between Kumiko and Reina close towards the end of this episode. The whole thing was actually handled remarkably which showed how the two girls have started to show changes in their personalities. Amazingly, Kumiko mentions how Reina seemed to her more adult-like compared to herself in that segment. Unlike what we were shown so far, it was the first time Reina actually acted like a child while Kumiko took the role of an adult, a complete reversal of their roles in episode 8 of season 1. Sometimes acting a bit childish is part of being an adult (Reina); while at the same time, realizing the differences that make an adult are also necessary to step into adulthood (Kumiko). Takeda did an amazing job and KyoAni captured it magnificently. Not to mention Kumiko and Reina's voice-actresses nailed it. Just thought that I should put my thoughts into words of appreciation of how amazing this anime is. I have already watched the particular segment 10 times and the more I see it, the more I am impressed. |

In the scenes when Kumiko talks with Yoroizuka towards the end of the episode? Are you sure that's what they are? The flashback shows cherry blossoms and it looks like the scenes in the present were framed with shots of something like Mirabilis bushes (Japanese オシロイバナ Oshiroibana). Agreed. I died when this happened because that sealed the deal that Reina is very hetero and wants to be with Taki-san. Oh jealously reared it's ugly head. LOL It was like a little piece of her just died when she saw how well Niiyama-san and Taki-senpai got along. |

Great eps!! I think it's already better than first season Kumiko and reina in swimsuits. Asuka senpai is beautiful as always Natsuki t-shirt make me laugh so hard. "Cement Addiction" hahaha. And then we have camp arc in the second half. Kumiko is hillarious as always. I love her hair at night when she talked to mizore senpai And the moment when she is talking to reina in bed. My heart is beating so fast Btw someone beat stark700 to make this discussion thread XD Reina face at the end though XD. Don't worry reina, you still have Kumiko :)! 5/5 for this eps. It makes a nice change to see some proper plot development progression being made at a swimming pool of all places. The only swimming scene at all was from Hazuki on her own. Still, seeing the girls in their bikinis was worth it, with Reina being my top choice out of all of them. =) Speaking of Reina, I couldn't help but laugh at her 'Dead-Fish' expression when Taki and Niyama were seemingly flirting in front of them all. XD Kumiko was a little unfortunate to be playing the musical piece that Mizore, Nozomi and her band played back in the middle school competition though. She's still not happy about the judge's final decision of their performance back then and I can't blame her, but since she was in a competition where winning was their ultimate goal, regardless of whoever is judging their performance, there will be winners and losers. That goes for almost all serious competition out there in music, sport and so on. Asuka, despite her stunning beauty and playful attitude, is keeping something locked inside of her that's probably preventing Nozomi from getting her approval to rejoin the club. Within time and from the inevitable pestering from Kumiko, Natsuki and Nozomi, I'm sure Asuka will open up to them with honesty and maybe things will go smoother for all of them. Overall, I really like this episode and I'm already enjoying Season 2 more than the whole of Season 1. Splendid job so far KyoAni! ^_^ |

Kumiko is so much mature than at the beginning of the first season. If we forget her breast-complex, her personnality had a big development since the start : want to quit music, didn't care-- > want to quit euphonium -- > play euphonium (no willpower against asuka) -- > got motivated to be the best and special -- > got motivated to win competition -- > became curious about people around her (second season) -- > try to understand them -- > take responsability and take action in order to eventually change things (she is eventually ready to challenge asuka's decision)... what a long way! If Kumiko keeps on with this development, she will surely end up being the president of the brass band in third year (or maybe already in second year?) :) Love also this moment and the way they moved toward eachother, totally cute. Thanks shanimebib for the image. I agree with many here, despite the fan service, there was no stupid joke involved and we got interesting talks with people who just happened to be in swimsuits. And I love Natsuki senpai as a character. She shines in many ways. She is beautiful "inside". |

Great episode. I like when fanservice makes sense, such as being at a pool in bathing attire, as opposed to tripping on a step and a skirt riding up goofiness. I hope Kumiko can convince Asuka to let Nozomi return to the club. I'm fairly sure she'll return, but this show can throw a curve so we'll have to wait and see. |

Kousaka reina is the savior of this episode/show. I actually feel bad for Nozomi, she had a hard time last year and asuka senpai wouldnt let her join now. Nozomi is something huh.. to be stopped from quitting by the great asuka senpai is really something. Many people are hating on asuka senpai but Im still on her and reina's side for now. |

It left a scar on her that makes her hate competitions. She is only into it because of her promise with Nozomi that they would win it once they are in high school.wonder why she really hates that specific song of hers. Well, that's kinda obvious. Or.. rather not as Mizore was kinda still ok when they were returning back on the back and even promised to play it again. I think that failed concert alone simply couldn't be the reason, the reason is probably what happened in their previous year when their friendship was shattered. We have a gist of it but we still don't know what exactly happened to them. |

Olem said: The simplest explanation would be that they grow there, at the location, they're not that uncommon... but I'm also more inclined to wonder with you that there was a point behind showing them repeatedly, not just in the background but in several close-ups as well. Don't have much to offer. Nothing definitive.Still, wonder what's the point of showing the flowers. Guess that'll be explained later Assuming they are indeed mirabilis bushes... when we checked hanakotoba sites, the Japanese language of flowers, we encountered three meanings consistently: 「臆病」「内気」「恋を疑う」 "shy" "timid" "to be doubtful, suspicious or distrustful of the love" are the literal translations of the words. I was told that this last symbolic interpretation may have something to do with the changeable nature of the colours of the flowers, though all flowers shown on the bushes in those scenes in this episode are white. These fragrant flowers open late in the afternoon and bloom through the night until early morning. Their inclusion in this episode can perhaps be seen as a reference to the hymn of the Polovtsian maidens from the second act of Borodin's opera which Yoroizuka so dislikes... Then there is their association with the white facial powder / make up to consider. I think flower symbolism is very rarely explicitly explained in anime though flowers are often incorporated and it is very rare to find someone with genuine knowledge of the subject posting on these topics ... it is fun to speculate. |

This is something I realized just now, but part of why I like Hibiike so much is not only realistic characters but Kumiko's monologues as well. Really adds to the depth and give the story sort of an oomph. And while I wasn't a big fan of Asuka in S1 but I'm liking her more now as this season is going to revolve around her (judging from the last pic of the OP. if not, she is at least getting a good-length arc for sure) we are getting more character insight. Ahh I love Hibike. It got drama right on mark. Riina was really cute there with her "Taki radar" I love these two's bond as much as always, the futon scene was too cute For once, we have pool episode done right. Instead of stupid fanservice, we got stuff which adds to the plot. I just saw Musaigen's OVA (and it was a beach episode) so I noticed how different the mood was despite it being the same studio and the same quality animation. Honestly, good direction can really change a work and do the hardwork done in the art some justice. I love the choreography of the ED song, the song is good too. |

Euphonium and Musaigen no Phantom World are both directed by Ishihara Tatsuya. While I have loved everything he has ever worked on, the blame is entirely on Ishihara and KyotoAnimation on Musaigen's failure. It is their first adaptation that just assumed characters and concept from an original story (novel, VN, LN, manga) but completely and utterly derailed from the story itself. Musaigen no Phantom World, if adapted properly, would have been KyotoAnimation's darkest adaptation yet (queue in Kyoukai no Kanata, FMP TSR or the joint adaptation of InuYasha movies with Sunrise Inc. which pale in comparison when it comes to Musaigen's dark story). @VersoSciolto: great look up! :) @Mich666: Let's wait to see what actually happened, shall we? ;) |

Hmm what purpose might that be I wonder. Hinting Kumiko's development? Yea, I heard that they adapted all the lighthearted moments (with some original moments as well?) and didn't get into the dark stuff at all. Its disappointing. I only like Mai, rest are pretty much forgettable. It's surprising how the same guy can direct one anime perfectly and not the other. I wonder why he didn't take the risk of doing the dark stuff. Is that even good kind of advertisment? I mean the fans who would like the anime, would expect the story to remain the same and read the novel, only to be potentially turned off by the plot twist. It's much better to insert dark stuff in the actual anime itself to earn fans who would "stick" with the novel. No doubt it kinda lost its appeal by the mid of it (until ep 11 or something) |

Said it last week and she appears almost immediately a week afterwards. Niiyama is gorgeous. Reina's dead-fish reaction was beautiful, as was the pool segment. Not only did we get to see a whole plethora of eye-candy, but we also had some additional reveals to the plot. Especially loved how they managed to continue that little joke of refreshing Kumiko's belief that her chest will grow once they get into high school (ala season 1 body check episode) after looking at Reina's figure. Love how a lot of the little stuff from both seasons manage to tie together. Want to see what the big rift that split up Nozomi and Mizore was. I get the feeling it has something to do with Nozomi not telling Mizore to leave the band with her (so basically a big misunderstanding of each other's true intentions of their actions), but the fact that Mizore looked spooked in episode 1 when hearing her name may indicate otherwise.... Asuka without glasses is a perfect 10x10x10, but Midori is still my fav. I'm surprised she didn't bring Kohaku to play in the pool though, it would have been the perfect opportunity to showcase her. Just one question for those in the know, who was that fourth girl waiting for Kumiko at the pool area? I'm talking about the one playing Janken with Hazuki. Feel like I've never seen her before? |

this episode was great! I'm really feeling these characters again. I really love how KyoAni always brings more realism to their work. in the pool scenes all the girls have great bodies, but they are not *unrealistic* - the proportions between hips, stomach and thighs are not blown out like so often in many anime. I really can't get enough Kumiko. It really doesn't matter which character we are focusing on as long as its through her lens. the 2nd to last scene with her and Reina was pretty. |

This season is gonna give us all the basic school anime stuff we couldn't get in the first season. I know it. It's only been two episodes, and we've already gotten both a festival and a pool episode. But whatever, it's Hibiki Euphonium drama and greatness that I look forward too. Poor Reina with her dead fish eyes just witnessed her male love interacting with someone old enough for him to be with, but at least she still has her female love. |

-Yeah, after listening to it a bunch, I actually like the new OP a lot -Sidetail Kumiko looks different -I can't seem to remember what the flashback at the end of the Kumiko and Nozomi scene at the pool was in reference to -The whole pool scene was far more substantial than I thought it would be -The cut to Green sapphire after Niiyama sensei's introduction immediately reminded me of https://twitter.com/i_akari_daisuki -Interesting symbolism behind those beetles -After hearing more of the backstory behind the incident that happened the previous year (with the Kumiko and Natsuki camp scene), I still don't dislike any of the characters that have names. Everyone's just trying to do the best they can in the given circumstances, and it's really hard to hate on them for that. -The scene with Kumiko and Mizore was pretty interesting since it revealed everything related to Mizore's inner conflict solely through flashbacks -Reina's wiggle toward Kumiko was fucking adorable Even while reading through the thread, no one seemed to mention where the flashback to season 1 during the first episode came from. Like some other people already posted, having a pool episode (or at least half of a pool episode) that had a focus on Nozomi's character development. The episode as a whole was pretty much focused on characters, with a split between the new characters (Nozomi and Mizore) and the old ones (like Natsuki and Asuka), so the entire episode was dedicated to my second favorite thing about the show. It's pretty hard for me to outright dislike any of them so far because of the way the backstories are presented. Also, just like the first episode, my absolute favorite scene in the episode was the one with Kumiko and Mizore on the first night of band camp. They revealed Mizore's inner conflict through flashbacks of events that have already had some exposition in the show, but they didn't outright say it. From the flashbacks, it seems like the expectations of her promise to Nozomi were way too high for the reality of getting gold at the first competition, probably because Mizore expected Nozomi to be there with her. This season continues to incorporate the best elements from the first season within it, while in general staying away from overly empty, artsy shots or redundant progression. |

Forgot to include that Oshiroibana is a seasonal word, associated with autumn. Sakura is associated with spring. I know you prefer not to provide details from the novels and merely mention them cryptically but I'm curious -and perhaps you can answer in a general way- if Takeda used flowers in her novels at all? Perhaps you can also answer in general if she explains the contents or background stories of certain musical pieces she selected? So far we know that certain pieces impact certain characters because of their personal association or identification with a particular performance of a particular work but I'm curious if the themes in the music itself played any role in their selection. We know that Taki asked Asuka to explain at least one piece, Crescent Moon Dance, which she then danced and briefly described, to enhance the band's interpretation through their understanding of the emotions the composer wanted to convey. Are there instances like that in the novels? Does she touch on the thematic elements of the compositions? Are the performed musical pieces the same? Is it true, as we were warned last year, that Reina's crush on Taki was used increasingly as a source of mockery, for schadenfreude type "humour" in the later parts of the novels? In the TV series' first season it started a little when Reina couldn't get a serious response out of -the suddenly gachapon obsessed- Kumiko one night when they met outside and from the way Reina's facial expressions were used in this latest episode it does look like they'll go further along that route in season two as well. Not something I'd welcome, personally, but the majority of reactions to Reina's face posted in various forums seem to indicate most people found that approach amusing. |

The flowers are part of the novel. But KyoAni puts flamboyant emphasis on their representation of seasons unlike many other studios out there. So, I think you did a great research looking that up. The flowers also play two important roles when it comes to relationships as well. If only there were more like you to bring up things that are worth discussing instead of "baiting this, baiting that" etc. Thank you for that. The music pieces are part of the novel. Takeda must have done enough research on that part. Which is also why I tend to think Japanese novels are richer compared to LNs. Some LNs are really good but it is the novels that standout most of the time. However, classical pieces are limited to my research on Nodame Cantabile (if you haven't already seen it, it's a real gem) only so I really don't think I get the connection with the emotional state of certain characters with certain pieces. Also, you have mentioned Asuka. Their talents as instrument players aside, Asuka and Kaori understand music better than the most. But it is Asuka, whose enthusiasm actually rubs off to the band members. Which is also why she is a key to the story as a whole. I have also put emphasis on Asuka's importance in the novel in many of my previous posts as she is listed as a protagonist in the novel unlike the anime. Asuka's story actually began in the final episode of season 1 which many didn't notice. The moment she says "Nan ka chotto samishikunai" just before the start of their performance had more meaning than one. Kumiko as well as the readers/viewers were not aware of that, at that particular moment. All of us were too focused on the performance only. It's going to be 'another Mamiko' all over again for Kumiko. The hint was there the morning before she leaves for the regional finals. The more vocal ones out there tend to think it like that. I don't, however. Instead, I really feel for her. Reina was always in a position she could never compete with her rival. Her rival appears in the final episode of season 1 as well and I am sure you noticed that too. [insert flower here] And her rival gets mentioned in this episode 2 as well. Also, Reina showed enthusiasm whenever it comes to Taki-sensei. But she only ever revealed it in front of Kumiko and very surprisingly in front of Shuuichi. This is also a huge indication to the other relationship of the novel as well. It's not only that she has been secretly observing Kumiko. She really saw through her. Reina is the only person who understands Kumiko. That is also why she tries to tease her when it comes to Shuuichi. She does that again and again in the novel as well as in the anime. Since I mentioned Shuuichi Nah. I better not. Just that he is not an "Ikujinonai otoko" like Reina says and she probably knows better. :) It's a challenge to not spoil others and I stand by my resolve to not spoil anyone even if they asked for it. So, please don't make me do this again! ;_; |

Looks like Reina has a little competition against Satomi. |

Well Reina really stepped up this season on expressing her love for Taki-sensei. In season 1 it wasn't really apparent despite her admitting that she likes him. |

BlueBalls said: Can you spoil me on Musaigens dark story? Out of topic: Contains Major Spoilers. I haven't read the novel myself but according to those who have read the novel: The first volume covers a story where Haruhiko enjoys a pleasant school life with a world full of people with abilities. He befriends Mai, Reina and Koito as in shown in the anime (Ruru doesn't exist in the novel, she is an anime original character). There is almost no fanservice in the first volume (with bits here and there which come with any school setting), just an ordinary school life of Haruhiko, along with the three girls fighting against bizarre monsters from time to time to protect the peaceful lives of themselves and those who are around. As they fight these monsters, they become closer. In the final chapter of the first volume it is revealed that Haruhiko possesses a never-heard-of-before ability that allows him to rewrite everything, which he wasn't aware of himself. And it is revealed that Haruhiko's time with Mai, Reina and Koito was meaningful but very short-lived. He rewrote everything after the three girls along with the two third of the world's population became victims of a very powerful phantom and are dead. When he removes his ability, there's no law and order. No infrastructure is recognizable. The entire world is at shambles with billions of people dead and the phantoms are running rampant and causing havoc. The second volume introduces the story's other protagonists who join forces with Haruhiko to defeat the phantom that destroyed the world. The protagonists are Inori — the strongest ability user in the entire Jubilee Academy and perhaps the whole of Japan, she can use 12 different abilities at the same time; Mei — a modified ability user returning from England, who was apparently taken away when she was very young because of her unique ability and became a test subject in a research facility, she is dispatched by the facility to fight the phantoms and she is the younger sister of Mai; and the third is Chiaki — a girl with no apparent ability that can be used against phantoms but has very strong connections with the top brass and uses her connections to assist fights against the phantoms. There is a third volume out, which apparently revisits Haruhiko's time with Mai, Reina and Koito (flashbacks) and vaguely reveals that he was in love with Mai. But the story is centered around Inori as she continues her fight with Haruhiko against the powerful phantom. Additional information: The first two volumes were already out before the anime started to air. However, Kyoto Animation and Director Ishihara only had the first volume in hand to work on the anime during the planning phase. The fact that there wasn't enough material in hand shouldn't justify KyoAni's decision to go this butchering route with no turning back. They made a joke out of a story which had a lot of potential so I was very disappointed. This, of course, their first adaptation I really saw crumbling down from the very beginning. Even the fanservice-fest didn't save it as it barely made any money. Covers of the three volumes: Status of publication: Ongoing Release dates: Vol.1: 2013-12-20 Vol.2: 2015-10-30 Vol.3: 2016-02-17 Coming back to Hibike! Euphonium: I love it! And here is beautiful Niiyama Satomi-sensei to change the mood! And my Kumiko and Reina ❤: |
