Dumb as expected, but I'll stick to watching it for the laughs. Also, I could have understood if the background characters were just in black and white, but why are they gradients of all things?

I'm guessing that the 17-year-old detective is the killer and the protagonist will have to find a way to indict him. You can't get more straightforward than this.

this anime caught me of guard. Really like the tone and the story so far seems interesting. I don't know why this anime made me remember Hannibal. Good start! :)

Is it me or the MC is like a (more) psycho Nagisa from assassination classroom?

nice to see lerche taking the mystery approach for Ranpo Kitan to the next lvl. not revealing any characters face till the right moment surely builds some sort of suspense. lets see how well they can utilize this in later episodes. the animation isn't anything stellar but they seem to give me some assclass vibes. looks like this studio is starting to give itself an identity. this whole crime detective thing is surely interesting. seeing a couple of them as made me appreciate it more. the source seems to be some great work so I'm guessing that is whats really going to determine how well this anime is. lerche is doing fine with the direction part, as i stated the reveal of characters. there are some creepy ppl in here and the mc seems too calm i guess this will really be a fun ride.

This is based on Edogawa Rampo books, where Akechi Kogoro is sort of a japanese version of Sherlock Holmes and Kobayashi as Watson-(ish).
While this is very loosely based on the books, I am pretty sure they are not going to change that aspect of the story.

You are confusing, Akechi is the protagonist MC in both the anime as in the novel, Kobayashi is the heroine and Deuteragonist. It is quite clear in the matter related to the anime that came out in Newtype.
Yes Kobayashi is a boy so much in the novel as in the anime.

Hashiba is triggered the worst character this season
Damn that most annoying character this Hashiba, is triggered the worst character of the season, totally bland, boring, annoying a total shit

I have only one question, do you think most of the series will take place on Kobayashi's or Akechi's point of view?
PD: Everyone that loves Inaba Himeko has a great taste in my opinion :3

,

The first three episodes is introducing Kobayashi, to prove that he is a whistle follow Akechi, then narador and the story turns on Akechi and cases.
It was one of the best novels I've ever read about mystery and detective.
And another Kobayashi is not a trap, he is a man, the more people often confuse it with a woman

The story will be fantastic, starting the moment Kobayashi becomes accepted by Akechi, there begins the resolutions of mysteries and crimes.

You guys have to take it easy, because the first episodes are about Kobayashi acceptance.

Okashi_sama said:
Man, this is awful. The MC is way too annoying with his attitude. And why the hell did they make him a trap?

Ahh, I'm kinda interested in the crime and the real killer though, I think I'll give it a few more episodes.

The MC is Akachi, this is the part of introduction and Kobayashi of acceptance.

Watching because it's horror. If this turns out to have been another Another with a promising start, compelling atmosphere and plot that falls flat by the end, and doesn't deliver on the horror as such, I'm going to be disappointingly upset.

Humm, and you know what they say about the normal one.... He is actually even more tightly wound than Kobayashi, so I could see him breaking down, particularly since he seems to have a thing for justice (based on his comments about his family), plus he is obviously in love with a trap. Man has some issues.

One thing I am curious about is how could Kobayashi (who obviously gets things beyond the norm) not get that his homeroom teacher was a mass murderer? I think there is something there which could be why he was set up for the murder. Could it be he knew, but didn't care? Might have something to do with how few of the other characters have any detail until Kobayashi takes an interest in them - that would suggest the director has good imagination (I loved using the lotus flowers to replace the blood - that made that scene far more creepy than gore would have been).

Or was it only Kobayashi saw the lotus? And of course who said that the teacher wasn't being set up as well? Time will tell.

Plus we know that Kobayashi has experience with the darker side of human culture, the way he had no care about the prostitutes on the roof shows that. He got bored with Akechi's explanation because he already knew it.

I am guessing that we will get a resolution to this murder by episode 3 and then we will have several such arcs where the detectives duel with each other. I hope so, their interplay could be fascinating.

So next episode, will Kobayashi attract the murderer because he will take ALL the credit for it? That was what Akechi was hinting at, and it is clear that Kobayashi picked that up.

Not a huge fan of mystery/horror, but this was a fun first episode and I have hope that the writer/director are seeding more things into the episode than a casual watch would reveal. Lots to think about, lots of possibilities. Time to go make popcorn on this, though I really wished I had missed this series until after it was over, the wait between episodes will be painful.

First, dat ass.

Why now? And I certainly won't hire this team to do the adaptation.

"The butterfly dream." 庄周梦蝶, probably one of the most overused story in any medium, let's see if they can pull off something creative.

Calmly staring at his teacher's horribly dismantled corpse and say this with no signs of shock or disturbed. "From this day on, my life is no longer boring." Yep, there goes all my sympathy towards the MC. And I can't wait for the reason why he is acting this way.

The show is laying down the rules, now I have to pay attention if it broke any.

I think there's a more serious crime here, they are raping the source materials.

Can't stand the trap MC. Why is that even a thing. Not to mention how much a a brainic he is, seeing the number and tracing it to the apt. Also completely emotionless. Teacher is murdered, doesn't care cause this is fun!.... Then the 17 year old "genius detective" calling the shots. Plz, what an edge fest. The silhouette extras are a really annoying and lazy trend in anime these days. But it sounds like this "game" could be interesting, but I'm already really disappointed in it's first impression. Terrible cast so far, interesting scenario, the art is decent besides the character designs, the soundtrack is good. Complete meh so far.

Not being a fan of gothic horror/mystery I have never read Edogawa Ranpo, but I do know that his works had S&M, necrophilia, incest, and pretty much every other form of decadent grotesqueness in them, so while I am sure they have updated his works (he died 50 years ago), I think they are keeping with the spirit of his works.

The whole point about decadence is having a normal exterior masking the rot that lies underneath.

As for traps. Japan invented them, they go back a couple of hundred years (Kabuki actors playing female roles so well that the Samurai loved them), so in a way they are the soy sauce of Japanese culture.

Edit: just read somewhere else. That Kobayashi is a trap is based on the original source.

First episode
Characters: 8/10 i love the MC a whole lot (seems to have a few screws loose which is always fun), Akeshi is very interesting and im curious to what thaat "pain" he mentioned was

Story: 8/10 Im a sucker for a good mystery and this is definitely one. It leaves me very excited for the next episode

Soundtrack: 10/10 HOLY SHIT the bg music + OP and ED were all fantastic (especially the ending i need the full version)

Animation: 8/10 Everything that was animated was very smooth and pretty. I dont quite have a problem with the greyed out people cause i think it's showcasing how boring the main character sees everything. If the MC isnt gonna pay attention to you, you're grey to them and unimportant, as we can see with the teacher. She was only shown in color when the MC noticed the scars on her arms. I think it's a clever way to cut budget as wll as add to the story

pretty fucking good start can't wait for the next one

And you had the most uninteresting post of any thread I have ever seen.

Congratulations on being so amazingly dull and pathetic. You must have worked hard to achieve this level of blandness.

Slight hint: if you want to knock a show, have the common decency to at least say why you disliked it. This is not to say that you have to like shows, but any ass can criticize another person's effort (in this case the writer/ director/animation staff), so if you don't want to be considered an ass, say why you hated it.

Yep, as I said, don't mind people hating shows, but as a knocker myself at times I just think it is basic manners to say why you hate something. Just defending civilization and all that, tiresome job, but someone has to do it.

On 4: did you notice that the loli teacher is a cutter?

The other ones you have a point on, it will be interesting to see if that improves. Though I know that the dullness was as deliberate as the use of silhouettes for characters. The MC is so warped that he views his own parents as backdrops, when characters come into focus, I think will be hints (like the teacher, despite the loliness and cat ears, Kobayashi didn't notice until he noticed that she cuts herself, though that his friend noticed I think gave a clue to this arc).

This doesn't mean that the show will improve, but it at least shows that the director is trying to convey something with the art and characterization. That alone makes this show uncommon.
