I think its super important people eat locally. If you can eat it and its good and its right there then why not? Cheap as hell too.

Jesus there's a lot of moronic fuckheaded toxicity in this thread, can a mod clean this up please.

I've heard plenty of good things about this series and now it's finally here. Off to a good start so far, the characters seem likeable and they have good comedic chemistry. And it goes without saying but the food looks super appetizing and heavenly, anime food always looks 10x more delicious 😩 don't watch this on an empty stomach lol.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

We're gonna be EATING GOOD with this one!

It looks a bit more conservative so far from a Trigger standard, but still, very good looking. Usually Trigger shows have a bit more energy than this had with faster pacing, but then this isn't an action series, so maybe that was to be expected. Just looks like a lot of fun so far, but I wonder if there's more to it than just hunting and eating.

Marcille is gonna be the centre of the memes this season I bet.

Female mangaka Ryoko Kui's completed 14-volume manga series about eating food in dungeons, it's like the TonDemo Isekai, but taking out the Isekai and making it a full fantasy vibe.

And Studio Trigger's return to anime since the SSSS.Gridman franchise, we're back for more Trigger goodness!

Bump of Chicken's OP is good, you can always expect good things to come out of the group.

For Laios and his party getting defeated by a dragon which ate his sister Falin, her teleporting the rest out of the dungeon consisting of her brother, mage Marcille and picklocker Chilchuck, they need to get food first to fill their stomachs. The problem is, all of their belongings are left in the dungeon, and Laios wants to go back to save his sister, which the both of them are willing to go with him...on the caveat that they can muster food within the dungeon from monsters. Their first target: a mushroom monster targeting dungeon newbies, and a huge scorpion, and since Laios loved monsters so much, he just picked them up, only for a dwarf to teach them how to dissect both monsters to get to the juicy parts. Apart from Marcille almost getting choked by a Slime, the dwarf adds that to the food list. And Senshi being a monster cuisine connnosieur for 10 years, it fits right in line with Laios's way of survival, though Marcille eventually gives in for the good food hot pot...although the Red Dragon is also on his bucket list for extreme delicacy.

Together, the 4 people start their expedition...though Marcille STILL is picky about monster food, which there are aplenty. Though one man-eating plant caught her by surprise to have Laios save her, his fascination for monsters...sure still rubs her in the wrong way. Senshi does his usual to dig out the edible parts, and it becomes a man-eating plant tart....though when it piques Marcille's interests, it lights up Laios's face.

Dungeon food, oh, dungeon food. It's eat or be eaten. It's dungeon food for the soul, and I want more.

It's one of my favorite manga, but somehow those seiyuu don't fit their characters. Why someone would put a generic ikemen voice as Laius, or a damn Gobuta VA as Chilchuck? Even art isn't so glaring, as I didn't expect them to make something too close to the original. But those VA? It will take some time to get used to them.

That was insanity. I thought it would be similar to Toriko but it's seems to be primarily focused on cooking and eating while keeping the fighting to a minimal. The show doesn't seem to be taking itself seriously at all despite being written for seinen viewers. I don't much of a story here for an entire 24 episode double cour season. I wonder how much longer this new magic is gonna last. I'll give it an 8/10 for now. The best character so far is the elf girl. I like her reactions and quips. The main character is interesting. He didn't seem to be too shocked by his sister's death, implying that death is not that big of a deal. The elf girl herself stated that she has died many times before. I wonder how they're going to spice up the story when the characters don't have to ever worry about mortal danger.

This was a nice way to start off my 2024 anime seasonals. =)

The comedy style might not be for everyone, but it kept me entertained for the majority of the episode. Poor Marcille will have to get used to being skeptical of the food that Laios wants to try out and what Senshi cooks up. Her reactions, including a zoomed in shot of her disgusted face, with lower resolution, made me burst out laughing! XD

As expected from Trigger, the production quality is very solid and consistent, the OP song from Bump of Chicken is always a jam and the voice acting (watching the English dub, just to clarify), is very good upon first impressions.

I think this 24 episode series is going to be one heck of an entertaining journey. I look forward to seeing what food that the group will form up next time.

Kind of "middle of the road" premiere episode for me.

The visuals are stunning, from chara-design, to backgrounds and the food detail. The whole world looks quite interesting too.

But I really can't get past Laios as a character and leader of a group. He looks so unexperienced on how to survive in a dungeon. His actions and lack of perception in battle made him lose his sister to the dragon and all of their belongings. It feels like a doofus that would end up killed or starved to death if it weren't for other people supporting his foolish endeavors. I'm totally okay with the rest of the crew, the tsundere elf, monkey boy and the experienced dwarf whom seems to be the most head leveled character in a group that's one step from being on the Konosuba level of dumbasery.

What a funny anime, I just thought everything happened too quickly, but that's ok lol.
If in the real world there are people who eat bat soup and monkey brains, it makes sense in a fantasy world for them to eat monsters (at least for me it does lol).
That scorpion must have been really tasty.🤤

This first episode was more fun than I was expecting, but I'm not sure how it could sustain a two cour run. At current pace it seems doubtful they'd reach the sister any time soon, and even in a world with resurrection it seems hard to believe a dragon's digestion would be _that_ slow.

I feel like that's almost the joke, and this is a comedy anime first and foremost (maybe not Konosuba level, but in the same ballpark). I don't think he was ever shown to be heroic or competent. I don't think he even wants to be. Two party members walked out on him in the beginning. He's just a dude who always wanted to meet creatures and eat them (the elf even calls him out on that).

It's too early to tell if that joke won't get tiring quick, but I think it's a pretty fun starting-off point.

It was okay, felt a bit subpar for Trigger still pleasing to the eye, concept reminds me of Tondemo Meshi but less engaging, i think the cast isn't really interesting for now except for the monster obsessed mc and the dwarf cook, the elf was kind of annoying for example

Omg I didn’t know that bump of chicken song was going to be the op. It’s been in Japan top domestic hits Apple Music playlist for so long lol.

Fans were hyping this one up a lot and so far it’s just ok. Definitely a better start than Tondemo skill which I hated. Elf waifu is so far the best part of the story. There were a few comedic moments, but nothing that made me burst out laughing. Marcille’s reaction faces and getting caught up by the plants etc were the highlights

I think marcille’s gradual warming to eating monsters was all of us over the course of the episode. Crazy how you put some seasoning and vegetables around anything and it’ll be good lol

How death works in this world is pretty interesting. Seems like there’s a certain amount of time after death where people can be revived. I was kinda confused why they didn’t want to revive the random adventurer they found though.. hopefully someone finds him there hanging 😂

Solid first episode. I wasn’t blown away, but I think it could be a fun watch. It’s too early to pass any serious judgement. It’s definitely a departure from the usual TRIGGER style of show. I’m just glad to see them doing more projects and looking forward to them cooking here.

Eat or be eaten!

A group of adventurers was defeated by a scaled-slash dragon due to their exhaustion and empty stomachs, losing one of their members in the process. Thus, Laios, Marcille, and Chilchuck venture back into the dungeon to rescue Falin. However, the main problem is their lack of provisions. This leads them to decide to feed on dungeon monsters, aided by Senshi, a dwarf conveniently skilled in monster cuisine.

I'll be honest and a bit blunt: I'm somewhat indifferent about Falin's rescue. Even her brother Laios seemed more focused on food. I have a serious issue with food-themed anime, and that's why I'm here. Scorpion stew or man-eating silver fruit tart are just a couple of the many dishes we'll see. Not to forget the reactions of our protagonists when they see, obtain, and prepare ingredients for these dishes.

Moreover, I really enjoyed the opening, although it's by Bump of Chicken, which was somewhat expected.

Despite the dire premise on paper, it's an oddball of a gourmet series with particular ingredients.

Marcille's reactions are priceless. I also find all the food trivia amusing. And on top of it Bump oc Chicken blessed my ears yet again.

obviously reminds me of that anime from winter23 where the guy travels with a fenrir and eats orcs and other monsters

they dont seem in a big rush to save the sister tbh
i wonder, i probably would behave like the elf girl seeing wtf they are eating, but it doesn't make her reactions any less funny

interested in what comes next

A monster lover. hahaha

Opening visuals is nice. And yeah BUMP OF CHICKEN's song is very nice too.

Already one of my favorites this winter season. Well it's expected coz the manga is one of the best and we have the amazing studio Trigger and the staffs etc...

I've been laughing throughout the episode. Love the comedy.

You know I had to check this one out simply because it’s being made by Trigger, a favorite studio of mine that hasn’t made an anime series in a hot minute, I think the last one I watched was Dynazenon which slapped but man it’s been too long lol, so glad this is a 2-cour to really savor their return. This was a good first episode too, definitely a bit reminiscent of “Campfire Cooking in Another World” from last year’s winter season which also had excellent production like this one, and so far the different ways to prepare monsters for consumption has been interesting, I especially liked the mushroom guy because of Dark Souls lol.

And I wasn’t expecting the plot to be driven by a race against time to save Laios’ sister from being digested by a dragon but it’s definitely a goal to root for if there ever was one lol, they’re lucky that dragon digests so slowly. And I gotta say one of my favorite parts of this already is Marcille’s reactions to all the shit happening around her, I’m sure she’ll get used to things eventually but for now it’s a lot of fun. That song by BUMP OF CHICKEN at the end was very good too, not sure if it was the OP or ED yet but it slapped for sure. Definitely looking forward to more of this, I’m ready to enjoy this 2-cour goodness!

Edit: When I mentioned the last Trigger anime I watched, I kinda forgot they did Cyberpunk Edgerunners lol, so that was the last one for me, not Dynazenon, point stills stands that it slapped tho lol

Nice premise and probably one of the most interesting animes this season.
I understand why they seem to be not so distraught about Falin's (armor dude's sister) demise being eaten by the Red Dragon. They are just racing against time so they can retrieve her body before it gets digested and resurrect her.

Whelp. I see nothing wrong with this first episode. I think it lived up to the hype. I don't know how the story progresses, but it delivered exactly what the premise and trailer implied. And yeah. Nothing with with the first episode. I see what it's trying to do, and I think it succeeded—10/10. (I can't speak for how the full show will turn out, but I have no complaints regarding Episode 1.)

The art is very appealing, the character designs are nice, the animation is fluid enough to keep me engaged, the voice acting's quite soothing, the setting and backgrounds are nice to look at. And of course, the gimmick (story/premise) is interesting. A fantasy story that wants to specifically focus on cuisine using monsters as ingredients. Who'd have thought the grand Studio Trigger would be handling such a niche-sounding story.

I can't say I understand how the show has an average of 7.7, as of Episode 1. I don't know who would desire to score it anything less than a 7. This 'story' is clearly meant to be a leisure watch, with less emphasis on storytelling and plot, and more of a focus on relaxing slice-of-life-ESQUE momentary bliss, banter, scenery, and vibes. Essentially a "fantasy/monster/dungeon ASMR". Anyone who isn't new to anime should have expected what was delivered. I understand wanting to refrain labelling this a 9 or 10 out of 10—and I understand people may have a problem with the lack of tension or stakes, or even narrative potential or complexity—but for something that's intended to be leisurely vibed to, I think all boxes have been checked, and I (for one) am satisfied.

P.S. I thought the pick pocket kid was voiced by a male adolescent. I thought, "Wow! For once, they got a real boy to voice a young male character." And then I went to check and lo and behold the VA is a woman. Not that it matters—she's really talented, for fooling me. Whenever a young boy sounds like an adult woman doing a boy impression, it ruins the immersion for me; but the VA is top notch here.

P.S.S. The tall blonde dude reminds me of Loid (Spy x Family), and not just because of similar appearances. I actually thought the VAs were the same at first too.

P.S.S.S. That freeze frame around the 20:54 mark caught me off guard. It almost seemed like novice iMovie editing for a YouTube video. Actually made me exhale. (Reminds me of that scene from Zom 100, when the MC tells his friend he wants to be a superhero.) I feel like this type of humor is becoming more common in contemporary anime. — I say that all as a compliment.

I came into this somewhat blind having only watched the trailer and reading the info here on MAL, and the first episode was good. I was also surprised to find out that this show is being released simuldub! While I've watched 99% of the anime subbed I decided to listen to the dub and I thought it was pretty good.

Anyway, hopefully the group reaches Laios' sister soon as I can't imagine their party member being inside of a dragon while the group experiments with monster food recipes lol.

It was an okay episode but not a strong start. Their lack of urgency was bothering me. Sure it explains loosely about resurrections in the background, as well as dragons taking a while to digest. But man it took too long to get to that. If they had even had a line about "We have X days to prep for this before it digests her." That woulda helped at least.

Either way I am hopeful for it. Well drawn, interesting characters, and my love for food stuff I think it'll go only uphill unless they mess this up.
