Do you think this is even possible? Seems like the majority of the live action creations have usually been ok-medicore for the most part. I think in part this was due to some technical limitations of the past and having enough of an audience to help fund it properly. Especially some of the action or more fantasy based ones are probably unlikely to come close. Probably only some of the more closer to reality ones are more likely in general. Maybe it is just an unattainable goal as things are now.

What anime or manga do you think have a good chance at being successful in this translation into live action? Do you think it is even possible for some of the best series to even come anywhere near to as amazing as they are?

If the source material is trash then it might not be too difficult, but it's impossible if we're talking about something great.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

the only one i can think of that could have a good live action is monster. mainly because its the only thing i've seen that tries to be live action but in animated form lmfao

if anything monster is most likely better in live action

If they work with the strengths of live action then sure. Otherwise if they keep it away from western studios that want to separate even the intriguing parts that already translate and don't need changes especially.

Most of the time the animation is so good a live action doesn't seem as likely necessary other than audience broadening, regardless of audience or whatever studios think to avoid animation (audience, don't like the artstyle, etc excuses instead of just giving it a go).

Some could work like many slice of life series but of course silly moments (especially when they change the artstyle a bit for the chibi moments) aren't really there but they probably don't need to be either (they could do it but it isn't the same).

I haven't seen the Japanese live actions but I assume the slice of life/romcom ones do work (I assume Wotaki's live action maybe was good) as there isn't as much needed compared to action ones with CGI, certain ways a set is, costuming and so on.

I do always find it funny when other characters are added and others are no where to be seen. I always is just hilarious or annoying to see that happen. I don't mind if they do with adaptations try to give more character if the character is a certain way but I do find usually that they just don't work not because I want to pull from the original all the time but because they still just don't add enough or take too much away. (Not really referring to anime live actions here but gaming adaptations).

I'm not an expecrt of Doramas, but I have heard shoujo manga adaptations are fairly good, due to not having to add complicated things like superpowers or anime clothes that don't translate well to Live Action, so maybe there is at least one that has accomplished that.

Many live-action anime out there have too much of a great legacy in which the real-life version would need to surpass or even try to stand on par with. But that wouldn't be a problem if the actual anime was below average, or even completely bad.
I'm not an expert at these things, and I haven't watched too many live-action adaptations, but I do indeed have an anime in mind that has a better live action. "Alice in Borderland". The live-action made by Netflix (yes Netflix) is actually a whole lot better than the Anime. I know the anime is a 3 episode OVA, but hey, it is STILL anime. The live action adaptation for this was a whole lot better; it had better moments, emotions, soundtracks and it felt REAL despite its fantasy elements. The live-action has raw emotions, and is a whole lot more relatable as you're seeing actual actors performing scenes. I don't know if the live action is comparable to the manga (since I haven't read) but I do know that it is better than the anime. So to answer your question, YES, a live-action adaptation can be better, even if it's only this ONE thing...

Never ever, despite what anyone says. Live action is an inferior medium.

It was okay for a live action adaption, but it is not better than the source material.

any rushed anime adaptation can be inferior than non-rushed live action. i guess art and inner monologue are lost. but with proper production and actors, live action can be better than a average anime.

not sure if live action can ever surpass anime, but for sure it can be competitive / close example when discussing about it. my limited example would just be the kosaka onodera because she is like prettier than anime version lol. There were some cosplayers who look on par if not prettier than anime version but unfortunately they won't be the main cast cause they weren't scouted / lacking talent in voice / personality etc.

I'm not sure about real life romance movie in general cause I'm not heavy into watching netflix yet. like here when shooting a movie about ghost, sometimes the movie had to be stopped when someone die due to something that you cannot see normally see.

I mean when you literally get people possessed because of watching a ghost movie than it's for sure already surpassed every ghost / horror anime in existence.

Obviously it's going to come down to personal preference but I think the live actions can definitely surpass the anime version.

I haven't watched too many live actions, but in my case I much prefer the drama versions of Seirei no Moribito and Nobunaga Concerto to the anime of each. There are probably more that I would prefer too but it's been hard to find the time to watch everything I would like to.

I unironically enjoyed the Death Note live action movie more than the anime. The movie was a classic example of "so bad that it's good". I was laughing throughout the movie. The anime became boring and a chore to watch after Light lost his memories.

Does Alice in Borderland fit the cut? Pretty sure the anime adaptation is dismal and the live action did so much better.

police in a pod live action.. much better than the anime...
And the movie tri cornered window movie is better than the anime...
Mob psycho and saiki k weren't too bad compared to the anime...
Neither were bleach and Gintama..komi san live action is on par with the anime, if not better

That's just my view..

I loved the 1st four seasons of Kindaichi live action...mind you different actors as 1st season was in 1995 and the 5th one is airing now...

The actor in the 5th has no emotion like that of Kindaichi and honestly even his voice sucks

Can it?

Yes easily, it does depend on the story though, because anime has the advantage of visual exaggeration which live action will fail to show properly, but if that wasn't part of the story and you had proper good actors and a good production I can easily see it being possible.

Somewhere out there, a better live-action adaptation could exist, but so could aliens, and well, we haven't found either of them now, have we? We might in the future, but not now, and definitely not for a long time.

Netflix' Alice in Borderland live-action adaptation only surpasses the anime because the anime is too short and doesn't adapt the whole story. Apparently Netflix plan on doing that, though how well they'll do remains to be seen when the second part hits the screen in December 2022.

So yes - a live-action adaptation can indeed be better than the anime, but only if the anime screws up. 😏

Btw. the manga is still superior.

Yes there is potential but there a few things holding live action adaptations back:

Fancy character designs that look like cheap cosplay when translated into live action

Japanese actors playing non japanese characters breaking immersion

Shit CG makes superpowers and creatures look more fake than Cher

Incomplete adaptations due to time constraints

And specifically in hollywood adaptations:

Changing too much usually for the worst

So, adapting an anime with reasonable character designs and no superpowers can result in a decent adaptation. Anime with superpowers can only work if the CG is better but currently Japan is leagues behind what hollywood produces. Maybe hollywood can do it. If only they didn't change it so much. Not sure about chinese CG, I don't watch their films but they'll probably move the setting to china and do a bunch of other changes so they're not ideal either.

I think more often than not, the fun doesn't come across when it's made into live action. I think it would be better to make a new animated film.

The only examples of successful live-action films I can think of are Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin. This month, they are making a live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie, but I don't have high expectations for the content.

Unlikely. There's a reason why it's adapted into anime in the first place, since animation would better capture the tone and feel of the source material than portrayed with real actors and settings

Possible? You mean unlikely and it is still very likely that live-action remakes of anime will suck. The likelihood of such remakes sucking is already written in stone.

Amazon will never see my Amazon Prime subscription if they really are making a live-action remake of Voltron. Never trust giant tech or third-rate assholes to do remakes of Japanese media. Especially when they don't know it.

If the anime is just a drama or comedy with little to no CGi involved and no crazy anime characters than yeah i believe live action can be better, but if we are talking about anime like one piece, HxH and fullmetal there is 0 chance for me that itanything good would come out of that

They can but certain things in anime look weird in real life. Like hair and costumes, if they make the live actors wear them, the show looks ridiculous.
