With the rise of sites like Anilist, do you think MAL has finally started losing its relevance?

For me personally MAL is perfect, I tried every other similar site under the sun and nothing even came close. MAL got what I need, my friends are here, it looks nicer than all the others too - except for backup purposes I'll never use another.

I only just started using both even though I made my anilist 2 years ago. Anilist definitely looks better and has more list features. If you like the Twitter look it is certainly for you. I am not sure why I am still staying here; the community is certainly not mal's strong point. I think it is because I've been here for so long and am used to the simple look of this site.

Anime Amino, Kitsu, MyAniList

MAL needs to make a mobile app version of their site or they are gonna die.

So true

I'll stay loyal to my main. I moved to Anilist when MAL had its breakdown and it was the worst. I couldn't get into it at all, it just reminded me of the mobile version of MAL and I hated it. Once in a while I visit Anilist to add my completed shows but I use MAL for forums, every single episode update and anything else. The only thing I liked about Anilist is the way your favorites are presented and how you can add as many as you want to without being a supporter.

Personnally, I prefer MAL. I tried using Anilist when MAL was down and I really didn't like it.

What rise are you talking about? Anilist is almost empty. And what happens on its forums is utter cringe.
Also, dat emoji score system for "special" people lol

MAL may have a larger userbase but it does NOT deserve one. It's only big because it's older than the others and has had a firm footing. AniList has a massively superior UI. Only thing MAL has above it is custom list CSS for those who want their pwetties.

Kitsu is where you go when you get banned from MAL and AL is a failed MAL killer that is obnoxious to navigate and takes even longer to implement features somehow.

Until AL gets clubs, I'm firmly here. And I'm not interested in Kitsu, period.

Also, heard the mods at AL are a lot stricter about lewd stuff. The fact that hearsay exists is a massive turn off.

This thread takes me back to when we were being invaded by AL peeps to try to convert us to using their site, by the way. That sure went well.

I don't think this website will ever be deemed 'unusable', it has too much significance. MAL is for the casual fan, the balls-deep fan and for the fan who needs to get a job. It's here for everyone. To say without any authority other than your own anecdotal experience that the majority of anime fans don't have a 'list' is nonsensical. Knowing that the progenitor of this comment literally administrates another anime website tells me all i need to know.
Sites like Anilist are too luminous in how they approach the medium by giving users a 24/7 feed. Ultimately overwhelming casual fans and solidifying anime as a children's hobby and that fans shouldn't be taken seriously. If you're posting 'good morning' and 'good night' messages every single day living in a hugbox i don't think i could take you seriously either. Anilist is a total joke and probably a pedophile's pond to play in.
Casual fans are the majority, normalcy will always be top dog - MAL isn't going anywhere.
Lie until what you want to be true becomes truth. Lie until you can't remember what's a lie and what isn't.  Lie until you aren't lying anymore!

I was on anilist before I migrated to MAL. While I prefer anilist in terms of how it looks and the different features they offer, the forum just ain't really it. MAL is way more active and it surely got a larger community. I prefer MAL over anilist any day now and it hasn't even been that long since i joined.

I don't think it's starting to lose relevance at all. The community here is too big for that to happen.

Its hard for me to say since I don't know the amount of users that Anilist has compared to MAL. But I personally find Anilist to be a better site compared to MAL based on the features that you mentioned. I think it's ridiculous to pay $30 just to add more favorite characters and anime. Also MAL's mechanisms for uploading images, videos, and other things is pretty outdated. I think a lot more people would come to this site if it made these improvements.

Myanimelist is most certainly not losing relevance, the only page that can kill MAL is MAL itself (and it proved chances to do that years ago with the drama it had).

I imagine this thread was made at the time we had the issues, I myself couldn't login for over a month until the admin himself had to fix my problems personally because I wasn't getting any help otherwise. At the time I made an Anilist account and to this day I still just use both pages for the benefits each has.

MAL's not dying anytime soon with how many people it has on it. I just use both, with slight preference for Anilist.

This, and also I'm too paranoid about something happening to one site and losing all my progress, so I keep both up to date lol.

I still follow you on both sites even though we haven't talked on Discord for a long time.
I use all 3 sites: Mal, Anilist, and AnimePlanet. I don't use Kitsu though.

Anilist is good for statistics. I can sort my anime and manga and see how much series I watch per genre. The younger community like Anilist because it looks more modern.

I also like making custom character lists on AnimePlanet. I enjoy being really creative on character rankings and custom lists on AnimePlanet. So all 3 sites have their perks. The tags make it easy to search for anime on AnimePlanet.

But this site (myanimelist) still looks like an early version of facebook with the signature white and blue colored theme, trademarks, and logo..

In 2018, the site was closed for 3 months. Mal tweeted that they got ddose'd on Twitter.

At first cyruz was helping people recover their accounts for people who couldn't login on the Mal Discord.
We all were forced to use MAL alternatives like anilist or animeplanet.
Then we had to contact site support to get our accounts back. Some people switched to Anilist and didn't return. This site is just a backup list for them.

You know, if I were to make a comparison...

MyAnimeList is like Spotify. Comprehensive collection of media, unrivaled user-friendliness, intuitive, large community, and absolutely dominant in its field.

AniList is like Apple Music, Tidal, or Deezer. You use it because you don't want to use MAL.

I'm not trying to make sweeping generalizations, as I'm sure there are some people who use AL solely due to its merits, but I'm wagering that those people are far and few between.

Yeah, personally, I feel like the forums are the main appeal of this site.

Of course, the list is what makes MAL MAL.. but forums tend to be the backbone of social communities like this.

OFC a TON of people use MAL without bothering to ever browse the forums.. but like.. it'd just be a lot different.. there wouldn't really be any reason to stick around on the site for very long. It'd just be used to look up seasonal anime and that's pretty much it.

Back in the day between 2010-2012 there was an "apocalypse" so to speak for OKCupid...but it didn't just like.. have maintenance issues..

Like, they got bought out by the guys at Match.com, and a lot of little changes came through over time...and eventually they removed the tab/link to the forums on the website. For awhile, you could still use them by typing in the address manually, but eventually the forums were permanently deleted. About 100-300 or so of us moved to a facebook group, but I don't use facebook anymore. and even if I did I probably wouldn't participate in the group. I did for a long time, but I became the butt of a joke. They really enjoyed picking on me, and I found it exhausting lol.

i use to back up my anime list on ANN's site though is doesn't have many of those music videos, specials or pilots but it has japanese, korean, chinese shows AND also american ones based on japanese properties! (it comes in handy with castlevania, robotech, etc), and i think i don't need to make another account on a site for now... because none of them has such complete database like MAL, i googled this anime and the first site to show up was MAL https://myanimelist.net/anime/43722/Ai_wo_Komete

Even if some of MAL's systems are very outdated, I don't want to move to other sites because of how little data they actually show you. The MAL interface is very good at being simple, clean, but showing tons of information in one place. Other sites like Anilist feel like they are trying to be a trendy social media outlet in terms of how they present their information about each series. In terms of just clicking on a show and getting the information I want, MAL is unquestionably the best to use. Plus, MAL lets you customize your list and profile to an extent that none of the other sites allow. Sure, some of it's systems are outdated, but I would rather work with an outdated framework that does it's job than a "sleek and modern" one that is frustrating to navigate.

Though, the actual community here is often more toxic than a nuclear fallout site. But that's just the vocal minority online anime community at large, so it's not really the sites fault.

Agree with this.

I also prefer MAL's rankings over the other two. Especially Kitsu, like bruh 38 out of its top 40 are all battle shonens, excluding movies its literally 40 out of 40

MAL is around 2x-3x larger than Anilist (which is the second largest other than MAL). I trust MAL's scores more because there are more people. While I love anilist's UI and features, MAL's forums and ease of use, especially in the app, is world's better than Anilist

Looking at Alexa's web analytics, MAL is almost 10x larger than anilist, MAL doesn't have any real competition in the west.

Well there ya go. Even though scores tend to be skewed through trends, I still think more users can be more accurate than if sites like Anilist that have less users. But it would be nice if we could have different features like Anilist does.
