Agreed on all that, it's not like anticapitalist themes are unheard of in anime, but what's great about kaiji is how it's not afraid to scream about it right in your face lol. It goes beyond condemning capitalism and more laments it, how it dehumanizes everyone forced to partake. Seeing kaiji have like an existential crisis at his dead end job is easily one of my favorite moments in the show. And likewise it was great to see tonegawa somewhat humanized after his arc.

And yeah oof, why did the bog arc go on for so long lol. It starts to feel so drawn out. The psychological aspects felt super downplayed as well since he wasnt facing off with another person directly. Just staring at that damn pachinko machine.

My favorite arc in the show was the one where they had to walk across the steel bars. That shit absolutely blew my mind and it was only a few episodes.

There are apparently 60 volumes of the manga, I think about half of which take place after the show. As far as I know after the pachinko arc it's all kaiji playing mahjong so you'll probably like it a lot. I got stuck on a several page description of mahjong I couldn't wrap my head around at the time and never really came back to, but I'd like to read them eventually too. Especially if it ever gets an ending.

never ever unfortunately.
the best you can do is read the manga from where the anime ends.

Yeah its rare to see any politics in anime, kaijis cynical anticapitalist themes were a great addition to such a bizarre show. I loved how it totally threw typical shonen tropes on their head by having kaiji lose in such horrific ways all the time. It's so tense cause you genuinely never know who will win. I could not fucking believe that season 1 ending lol.

I love that writer, but, I just don't understand mahjong lol. Most of the manga he writes is about mahjong. I'd really like to watch akagi though.

If you're interested in his manga, you should read strongest man kurosawa. It's pretty much as batshit as kaiji, but unfortunately I don't see it ever getting an anime :/

What do you think of season 2? I loved the beginning but wasnt as into the long pachinko arc.
