With the rise of sites like Anilist, do you think MAL has finally started losing its relevance?

A lot of people are only here because of the community. And the site has the biggest amount of followingship, so I would doubt any other competitor would get in the lead regardless of the 2 month silent storm.

I tried anilist and it didn't actually provided much of help since it did more harm than actually helping. It doesn't help that my connection is downright bad. So.

as stated before, MAL is just a very organized website and it's going to be hard to find a website that works as well as MAL does.

I used kitsu while I couldn't update my anime list entries here, and that's about it. Imo Kitsu ain't even that good and I didn't bother to create a user on other websites, such as anilist.

I was here, and i'll be here.
I rarely post anything on these forums though.
Too many elitist and toxic people. Not to mention the ones that think it's a race to comment on everything, and mark every anime, to wave around as some kind of status symbol.

That being said, the site is good the way it is i believe.
It's not like i have to see the above mentioned creatures, unless i choose to.

Though these kind of threads is good, it can install some fear in their(mal) hearts, fear of losing users. lol

Many users permanently migrated to other sites too after the apocalypse here.

Let's put it like that: I have over 800 titles in my anime list. It took me 3 days to input the original set, and years to grow it to this size. If I'll migrate to another site now, I'll need to spend at least a week on that. It takes more than a few features to make me do it.

In the first place, what the hell are public feeds and taiga? Why would I need some northern forest in my anime list? Or do you mean the angry loli from Toradora? I think she is listed on MAL already.

About the only solid choice is AniDB, because it's paired with a good database. (MAL's database is lacking in many things) But there is no particular need to migrate there either.

That's why mal provides you with export list option and you can import your lists in other sites, it's a matter of two minutes lol.

Public feeds are global feeds, basically like twitter where you comment/post something in your profile and gets visible to everyone in the global status, you can discuss then. Taiga is an anime tracker for pc, synchronizes your progress and a lot of users find that useful. There are other features too but whatever.

Thank you for your explanation. I still don't feel like migrating, though.
Maybe because I actually like MAL's nice and shiny interface.

I created Anilist account a while ago, everything was fine until I changed my username. I cannot login or reset my password even with correct email (I checked everything twice before).
That's why I came back to MAL. I agree that Anilist has a lot of feature, but MAL still has larger fanbase.

MAL is so much more popular than Aniilist (and better) but quite a few people did leave this site when the apocalypse happened although I don't think it will have much of an impact on MAL in a few months.

Also apparently now mal is getting more traffic than pre apocalypse

What is API? I keep seeing that everywhere and I have no idea what that means.

Also to answer the OPs questions. I have no idea, I so know however I made back ups on AniList and Anime Planet and when I was importing my list it was taking a long time to import and this was back when MAL went. So those sites probabaly did gain a lot of users but whether they will still be as popular or relevant as MAL once this site is fully back, only time will tell.

Doubt it. MAL got its listing system back up pretty quickly; only the forums, for the most part, have been down the longest. I don't know what few features are still left to get fixed but I imagine the primary purpose for the vast majority of people in using MAL is just to list and track their anime, features which were fixed very quickly compared to the rest of the site.

Not to mention that for as new or shiny other websites may be, MAL doesn't look atrocious, it doesn't have much in the way of clutter and I've personally never had any issues with it being slow or laggy. I never had much of an incentive to fuck about trying other websites because MAL works just fine. In the years I've joined I don't think I've ever experienced MAL being down once, so I'm not gonna just piss off forever because of a random blip since that means trying to adjust to new websites.

No. I saw the activity is the same (more or less) when the reviews returned weeks ago. I created an account for AniList and that site is ok but it doesn't have so much activity as I expect. The forums there are mostly dead. I like that it has some useful features like the dark mode and the score system. I will stay in both sites.

Newer users might have chosen other sites for the past 2 months because they didn't see all the advantages of MAL but I guess those who've been here for while won't just go somewhere else if they are used to this site.
I tried anilist myself but it just didn't feel right, I still like MAL better.

Apps are the biggest threat.
Anime Amino, Kitsu, MyAniList

MAL needs to make a mobile app version of their site or they are gonna die.

I don't know I tried some of the other list sites while mal was down testing them as backups if mal never fully recovered, and while they did some things betterr, I overal didn't like them.

weirdest thing was one site gave me like 2k less episodes watched, which I get...but other gave me over 2k MORE

One of the reasons i won't leave MAL is because i already have my list updated so if i migrate to another website i have to add all the anime i've watched from the start and that's a waste of time and energy.

i think the word of losing its relevance doesn't seem right to describe the current MAL situation right now......

The lack of moderators and admin who are active in digging up informationis the cause of losing its relevance. And dont have to blame them, considering that MAL was being maintained a few months ago.

so what is the words to correct the phrase of losing its relevance?

I'm used to this site and have tried others in the past (Anilist included) and never stuck with any of them. Also I didn't really hear much about Anilist until MAL went down, and now that the site is mostly back up, I can't see many people migrating.

The biggest appeal of this site over the others [was] a large and active forum userbase:
* By now, it has probably eroded somewhat with the extended downtime.
* It went to shit anyway before the MALpocalypse - this place is a safe-harbor for shitposters and trolls.

I think MAL is better than Anilist in many ways - but to be honest, the lack of communication almost made me want to ditch this site.

I think MAL is fine for now, but if something like this happens again, and they choose to be secretive once more, it won't go well.
