Huh, another good episode :)
Not that many changes, but that's not a bad thing at all.

I honestly think the same. They're really focusing on all the pressure Keiichi is under, so I wouldn't be suprised if it turned out like that.

because it's a remake/reboot

It's more of a sequel, but the complaint is still unjustified.

Rika is acting weird tho. So she just gave up?

One of the best episodes of this new Higurashi, great pace and that last scene with Rika was chilling, I can't wait for the next episode.

I don't understand...Why would Rika say that Takano is dead? I mean she clearly snapped and was damn honest with Keichi, what stopped her from saying that Takano isn't dead?

Great episode. Keichi is completely alone, everyone is suspicious. Even Shion who is supposed to be on his side, and finally Rika dropping that chilling bombshell on Keichi.
Shoot first, think never.

Imagine watching that last scene without having seen/read Higurashi before lol. It's like Rika is done playing this game already

The part about Tomitake and Takano stealing the van and escaping was also a bit.. odd and out of character to me

But I do have a good guess as to why

I really, really dislike some of the voice acting in this reboot. I actually muted Takano and Oishii in this episode because the overacting was so grating. Hopefully the dub does it's own thing and doesn't try to copy their voices.

Rika straight up laughing at his dumb story and pretty much just done with all this and giving up because everything is already fucked was great

Rika snapping was pretty interesting, she is tired of dealing with this shit it seems. I liked the creepy eyes.

She spilled quite a lot to K1 so I wonder if the end of this arc turns out drastically differently than the original.

Agreed. There were scenes that you hardly could see anything.

Ah so I was not the only one. It seemed like to me there was like a subtle dark film grain like effect in those darks scenes, it felt pretty off.

The lightning in the storage room was too dark, can barely see anything. I have to say that the statue was interesting though. Not only the head fell off, but it also split into half rather perfectly.

Rika's snapping is gold though, as stupid she may sound. But I really hate that red eyes, it should've gone a darker shade of purple as DEEN did.

Finally, some backstory! Watanagashi is indeed a very creepy tradition, especially it's roots and what it means, just insane.

What still bugs me up the most is wtf is happening with Mion and Shion, they always act weird in random moments. So their dad is a yakuza boss, what a plot twist xD

So in the end who is missing? Those 2 and the detective or only the detective?

From that scene with Rika that we've seen earlier, i feel like Rika should be the one helping Keiichi but it doesn't lool like it's gonna happen anytime soon, I've never seen the original so idk much, but one thing is sure, her eyes were different from the rest...that's gotta mean something.

Can't believe this anime is actually 24 eps, it's becoming slowly a rezero v2(ik that Higurashi came before, calm down), with a lot of deaths and suffering. It will be so hard watching this from week to week, and for such a long time, i mean i know it will be worth but there will be too much suffering, every time i see the ED i remind myself of that...

Man one pet peeve I have is when an anime character is being questioned and makes it completely obvious he’s lying yet the other person believes them, but it’s especially bad with Keiichi who literally sounds like he has a speech impediment whenever he’s trying to lie his way through anything.

Damn, Keiichi seriously should have just gone see the loli dance... now it seems things are officially screwed for this current timeline. Better kill yourself now, Kei-chan~

Okay episode overall, I guess. The legend about Hinamizawa's origins as well as Oyashiro-sama's real nature was quite interesting to hear.

Now on the other hand, Keiichi's outburst at Shion through the phone looked kinda overdone to me and in all honesty, it was actually funny to see Rika snapping at MC for being so easily convinced to enter a place he shouldn't have gone in the first place. She looked so done with the dude's bullshit, honestly.

Another 10/10 Higurashi episode. Went by in the blink of an eye. Keiichi should’ve just been honest with everyone, now he’s lied and is the potential target of being demon’d away.

Rika’s final scene was crazy. So far I’m enjoying Gou more than the original.

Absolutely. Unlike her, Keiichi has no clue what's going on and she will barely tell him anything, yet she expects him to just magically solve everything, and then shits on him when he (naturally) doesn't, and just hangs him out to dry. That's not something a real friend would do.

Everything till now was mostly like the VN (except the obvious differences, the doll, the Rika scene)
So i don't think they're "focusing more" on Keiichi, he was like that in Watanagashi-hen (maybe they changed that in the old anime idk).

This wouldn't make much sense. Why would the village chief be missing if it was K1 that was undergoing L5? We see his POV and there is no hint that he even knows who the mayor is. I think Rika would also have been nicer to K1 if she really thought that he was going bananas. Rika just seems to think that he was being stupid, which again is quite different.

I remember being more scared of this anime, the new art made it seem very cute now. (Or maybe its because I grew older so horror doesn't scare me as much)

In any case, I am confused!

Oh well oh well, Keichii why do you need to lie in a bad way?!! You already have no way escaping the girls for darn sake. Well now he's part of this curse as both Tomitake and Takano are cursed and dead.

Ofc he is scared and is going a bit paranoid in this arc. Also I did expect Rika will be mad, but DAMN her eyes is creepy as fvxk. Well she mad now, and Keiichi will be up for dead next week (maybe).

Im gonna join in as well but THE LIGHTING IS SO BAD. Thankfully I was watching this at night (helped me a bit) but if it was not then I'm not satisfied with the brightness. I complain everytime on Tonikawa for being too bright (and damn it Seven Arcs fix that) but here is the opposite, it's too DARK. Well here I am still confused if I'm gonna watch the original or continue on weekly, Idk anymore...

Red eye Rika was so creepy. Also Mion being tired the next day was strange considering she had no reason to think the curse would come after her. Also "Super Slaughter Sludge Explosion Murder Dodgeball" sounds like something named by Bakugo.

LMAO poor Rika, I think she finally lost her sanity.
I'm starting to suspect that in the previous arc it was her who attacked Satoko with a knife leading to a scuffle and Rika won the fight and then stabbed herself in the throat like she did in the eye opening chapter because she kinda knew how this was going to end. I'm starting to think Bernkastel has something to do with this shit, there are too many possibilities in my mind about this story xD

Thoughts on the editing etc

Wish there'd been some grisly shots during Takano's story and explanation of watanagashi than just K1 standing there listening etc. though the shots of Rika's ceremonial dance in Onidamashi work very well with the description of the sacrifice Takano was describing.

Shion just randomly touching the statue.... there was no pause or shift in tone to suggest she was whinking about something or reacting to something so it just feels super out of place in the edit

I feel like the acting for K1 was too OTT in the storehouse and when on the phone, and he sucked so badly at lying to Mion. Though maybe this behaviour can be explained by

^ Yeah, I feel you

I've also been feeling that the way the music is implemented is kinda poor, though it is nice to hear the old tracks. That exact moment at 16:35 with the sudden camera effects and music, and again the wobbles at 18:30 was so janky. I've been feeling that the pacing and tone is off, but I'd need to rewatch the original to see if the 2006 anime was better at creating and sustaining tension

Thoughts on what happened

Takano's little pout was a cute character moment. So was Mion blushing when she took K1's hand

Shion says "ano, konban no watanagashi no omatsuri no toki ni, watashi-tachi yonin haita ja nai desu ka" which does imply that she thought 4 people "entered" [the storehouse], which goes against her knowledge of Tomitake staying outside.

I really hope this arc is a little longer than 4 eps since I don't think it would be good pacing to wrap this up in a single episode. I also wished that we would get to see Rika trying to figure out what's happening even now, rather than leaving it for another arc or two, but given her reaction at the end of this ep that seems unlikely.

Am I the only one here who's really confused by this series and has no idea what's going on? Keiichi was dead and so was Rena and suddenly they're both alive again. Are we in some kind of alternate universe here? It's like different episodes / short arcs that have absolutely nothing to do with each other and coincidentally take place at the same place with the same characters but another story. Sometimes it's like a happy cute anime and in some episodes it gets dark and creepy. I mean this show not bad but I'm pretty confused and it's not a particularly good show without a storyline that fits together - because without that I never feel excited about watching the next episode because it has nothing to do with the one before. I don't want any spoilers but will this show get better?

Though what confuses me even more is that nobody here seems to bat an eye and everyone acts as if they can totally follow the (non-existent) storyline. Anybody else here confused as hell?
