Every time I see a forum post about mecha I see a lot of people saying that they either hate mecha or mecha is boring. I know opinions exist but I want to know what caused them to hate or to assume that mecha is boring.

just taste, people watch it and can't enjoy it, very simple. Mecha is by no means boring, it has robot fights and action. Same reason why some people don't enjoy anime romance, it isn't their thing.
Well, I agree that some mecha anime are boring, but every genre has these kinda stuff. And new mecha is hard to make, animating robots is hard and studios don't wanna invest in that, that's why some new mecha look not that good (dragonaut for ex).

I think it's just that having two big robots fighting each other doesn't appeal to them. Personally, I really like mecha. Just started watching Star Driver and the fights are fucking insane. Also, I think that since most of the newer anime have CG mechs, that puts a lot of people off.

I’ve never been interested in robots or technology and such...
Also I don’t like pure action series so mecha already has two things I dislike. And I’m not gonna watch a show that I’m probably gonna hate.

Of course there’s an exception to this, I love Eva. Don’t think I’ll be watching any other mecha shows though.

Mecha is a cool genre (to me at least), though be it a little bit dated. We'll probably get less mecha-themed shows in the future as people's tastes continue to shift towards more common themes.

I am planning to watch the entire Gundam series (all 98 entries) around the start of next year once I get through my backed up catalogue of shows I'm planning to watch next.

I have no clue, I love mecha anime, Code Geass is my all time favourite mecha anime, then there is NGE, TTGL, DITF and Mobile Suit Gundam. I actually like a lot of mecha anime, however I do have to agree that the recent mecha anime have been pretty horrible (Not counting DITF, I loved it). I don't think there are many people who hate mecha anime, at least I haven't seen many people who passionately hate it, they just think that it's boring and that's all.

Because it's awfully misrepresented in the West. People seem to think it's pure action or whatever, when it's actually the genre that imo has by far the best groundwork/potential for character development, romance writing, and interesting sci-fi ideas. Cool technology and giant robots fighting each other are just vessels through which the story is told, it's not like you're watching a kaijuu show lol

It's not that I hate the genre is just not for me. That's not me saying that I don't like any Mecha shows. My favorite anime of all time is Code Geass but even with that show the last thing I am watching it for is the Mecha fights. I'm more so love that show for its characters and the story. The only Mecha anime that I watched where I was legit into the fights was Gurren Lagann and that's just do to how over-the-top those fights were. I don't really think it's a hate thing when it comes to the Mecha genre I just think it's that most of the online anime community doesn't find it that interesting.

Not every genre is going to appeal to people, the idea of giant robots fighting don't appeal to some people. In my opinion, Mecha is one of those things which don't work well in anime.

I'm sure it's just that people aren't interested in giving the mecha genre a try. I know for me that I thought the genre was just all about the giant robots, like how it's all about the giant monsters for some kaiju movies I know.
It was only recently that I decided to give the genre a chance, after I saw this one YouTube video saying to do so. So sometime ago I watched the first episode of Brigadoon: Marin and Melan and I thought it was pretty decent... I really need to watch the rest of it.

I enjoy mecha movies like Real Steel and Pacific Rim. But for some reason I can't seem to watch any mecha in anime. With the exception of Code Geass of course since that anime isn't really about mechas. I don't know. Maybe because they're so clunky, slow and hard to comprehend. I don't find them realistic with this kind of medium. In Pacific Rim, the giant robot looks like it's actually there. You see yourself looking upwards and feeling the weight of it. The punches on the kaijus looks slow but has heavy weight on it, it packs a serious punch. And the materials that created the mecha isn't something the creator added on the periodic table. Same goes for Real Steel. Unlike in anime, it's hand drawn, quick af and has these absurd weapons that can destroy anything.

Iron Man's nowhere near as cool as a giant robots though, power suits are pretty lame imo.
On topic though, I don't really watch mecha anime, I do like mecha games though, I've got 4,000 hours in a single Gundam game.

I greatly dislike humanoid mecha.
as long as I can imagine a person inside like a sentai robot, it turns me off right away.
I like the mechanic/industrial style ones and weird hunched alien designs.
as for the action, two robots punching eachother is dumb. it doesn't cause damage.
but the real achilles heel of the genre is the mc stuck inside the strongest metal safe in the universe. it's plot armor in a literal sense.
that said I've seen many amazing mecha shows I love, including boxy humanoid ones as well. I think the correct answer to your question is that they just never never saw the right shows or never gave it a chance.

Somehow I'm not a fan of Mecha like, at all. It never interested me and like the whole changing mechanics-style and transformations are feeling way too... robotic? Some sakuga can be really nice to see but that's it actually for me. It even came as a surprise to me that I liked and completely watched Aldnoah.Zero and Robotics;Notes but that is because of other elements than Mecha.

Two giant robots controlled by pilots in a cabin inside fight against each other. They have lasers and occasionally swords, and all you watch is explosions and heavy hits against an apparently indestructible metal armor.

You can make lots of series and lots of viewpoints around this premise. You can focus the show on the pilot's state of mind, on friendship, on the futility or the glory of war, and some will probably be interesting, but the previous paragraph is the selling point that makes mecha as a genre what it is. And that is the problem. If you are not interested in giant robots fighting, then it's hard to be interested in the genre, because that's what it is, that's how it is defined quite literally. And maybe if you like war drama you'll enjoy a mecha that happens to focus on war drama, but that will be regardless of the defining element of the genre.

That's why I can't consider myself a mecha fan even if I have enjoyed certain mecha stuff, and I know there's a bunch in my ptw that I'll love.

A couple of things:

1 - Not knowing about the genre: basically, lot of people think that mecha is about robots with super powers and childish plots.

2 - A mecha show always has mixed genres: basically, mecha shows tend to have multiple genres, so people not enjoying one of them is a minus.

3 - Also related to the genre, militar stuff: this genre isn't that popular either and it's present in most real mechas shows.

4 - In the west robots aren't generally the same type than the ones in anime: it's different so it's bad, your usual bias.

Because people are boring (and generally uninformed so they just repeat what they heard others say about robot anime). That's the only answer I can come up with.

I have a habit of staying far away because I have a belief they most the mecha I have watched have uninteresting characters, episodic plot, slow progression. If they are more like Oban Star Racers and less like Sonic X, I'd be interested, but who's gonna let me know that?

Mecha is too close to a flavor rather than a vehicle for storytelling, despite being about literal vehicles.

I don't really get the need to make it a genre. It's a just a style of combat.

Drama is a style of combat to some extent.

It probably has to do with the heavy politics most of them have, their tendency to have 50-episode stories, the habit older ones have of forcing a fight scene every episode, and the feeling that the pilots are detached from the action.

Most of them just simply not even trying. Except for CG, Eva and TTGL. They weren't even trying and yet claimed they don't like it. And growing up in the age when mecha is not a big genre anymore is also a factor.

It's a cool genre. We haven't had any stand up bangers recently but it's still a cool genre. I'm currently watch Kuromukuro and I think the shift to heavy cgi in more action shows might've caused a knee jerk reaction for the fanbase. I don't see it as a dead genre but every once in a while it would be nice to have a decent one without so much cgi (it's not the worst but very typical at this point).

I'd have to agree. Most mecha anime now has heavy use of 3DCGI which is a turnoff for most viewers, and the older ones that use 2D are probably too jarring to modern viewers. all of this is worsened by how little mecha is coming out.

Judging by the replies here, a lot of your haven't seen a lot of mecha anime.. Some think its just about giant robot fighting each other, or MC having plot armors
There is much more to the genre than that, I strongly suggest you watch shows like Vifam, SPT Layzner, Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis, Getter Robo Armageddon, Shin Mazinger, Giant Gorg and Giant Robo.

complaining about the genre saying its repetitive is silly, just about all Isekai, romance, slice of life and even shounen anime are just as repetive and lacking ideas. if anything the MEcha Genre always keeps it fresh and original while borrowing some tropes from other animes.

3d mecha shows are fine, especially shows like Shinkalion and the Tomica series. But Gundam continues to use 2d animation and mixing it up with 3d.

Since Code Geass is one of the cheesiest overemotional teen melodramas in anime + the MC always wins with asspulls + absurd excuses for political thriller + some mechs...
I really admire the consensus of "Mecha is pretty bad and stupid but Code Geass is one of the few which makes a difference.".

I mean it's OK to dislike, not being interested or even misunderstand mecha but accepting Code Geass as good or even superior...maaan.

Code Geass script writing and political thriller were a mess. But then, Code Geass fans would not watch something like Dougram unless they go through Clockwork Orange type torture.

Back in 2005-2007 there was a mecha rennaisance with titles like FMP:TSR (mainly because of Kyoani). Eureka 7, Gurren Laggan and Code Geass but it seems that unlike shonen it failed to gain any momentum. Way too expensive as well. Only good old Gundam paid off it seems.
