I have seen a lot of people as of late saying that they hate comedy in anime. Not just out of place comedy, not just that some jokes don't land, they think at all comedy in anime just sucks.

I want to know what end of the spectrum you fall into do you like comedy in anime do you not like it, if so why or why not.

I am a person who likes comedy in anime. I don't like out of place comedy. For example the comedy in Hellsing Ultimate I really didn't like because it felt so out of place in that show and felt like it came out of it completely different anime.

I think I never watched an anime focused on comedy. But hilarious moments sometimes are welcomed.

Some anime are better with comedy, some anime are better without comedy.

I think most anime comedy is funny.

I don't think all comedy in anime sucks (Gintama is one of my top favorites) but I just rarely find it funny, especially in anime that are focused entirely on comedy. I guess I dislike it more often than like it.

I really like it, it's just a shame it's mostly japanese comedy

I'd love to see an anime with the same kind of comedy as Fargo or the Naked Gun franchise and with way more sarcasm and dark humour

I love comedy anime. Most of them make me laugh. I also like most comedy in other shows mostly because I connect to Japanese comedy styles of puns and the straight man, etc. Slapstick is my least favourite comedy style and I tend to avoid shows featuring it.

I am not sure, it's a bit hit or miss for me. Like romantic school comedy is mostly not for me, but Gintama or Prison School, Grand Blue etc, these are the shows that make me laugh my ass off.

I mean, Gintama had made me laugh so much than any other shows ever did. So yeah. Kinda hit and miss sometimes but when it's funny, it's funny.

I like around half of the jokes anime throws at me. The percentage is higher in some shows (high school boys daily lives whatever, nichijou) and lower in others others (blood lad, saiki S1)

For me it is hit or miss I usually do not laugh that much when watching series that are only comedy and laugh a lot more at series that have comedy elements...Haikyuu, One Piece, Kuroko no Basket etc.

I've watched a bunch of anime with comedy tag slapped on them, but only 4 or 5 of them actually managed to made smile. At this point I just rewatch random standalone episodes of Gintama whenever I want to watch some comedy.

depends

some comedy in anime is absolutely hillarious imo (like Konosuba or Daily life of highschool boys)

but there are also a lot of cliche 'jokes' that you see in a lot of comedy anime that just really aren't funny imo

I love a good comedy. It takes effort to pull it off but every now and then comes a show that does so.

YES! One Piece and Binbougami ga! among MANY others have brought me to tears laughing! Comedy can be used especially well as a tool to create a lighthearted environment, potentially for relief or setting the mood before the mood suddenly changes. Detective Conan does this extremely well.

As for Gintama, it's not really my type of humor but I'm only about 7-8 episodes in, so maybe I'll eventually like the characters more to like their humorous traits.

I definitely like it but I don't often find it funny. Comedy in anime just makes me really happy and it makes me smile but I don't usually laugh at it because Japanese gags mostly just aren't my sense of humour.

There are some exceptions though, Grand Blue, Konosuba, and the most recent episode of Kaguya-sama made me laugh so hard my sides hurt.

I don't mind pure comedy/parody shows like Konosuba, OPM, Seitokai Yakuindomo and so on, but comedy in other cases is a double-edged sword. 85-100% to 0-15% comedy/seriousness is fine but anything closer to the middle (50/50) can't decide if it's serious or not. I think you should either claim your show to be serious with occasional jokes or simply do a comedy cause misplaced comedy completely ruins the show to me.

I think FMAB and Haikyuu are perfect examples of well-placed comedy. 85% seriousness, 15% comedy, jokes are made at the appropriate time, they are funny - you can't ask for more. On the other hand, an example for misplaced comedy to me is Soul Eater. It has super serious themes and fights but jokes around right in the middle of it. It's not a comedy but it's also not a serious show so it simultaneously fails to make me laugh and to make me feel for the characters.

Comedy itself has always been a hit or miss, so it really depends on my mood and how much the comedy makes me laugh and care. I mean, comedy is as much as an emotional issue as, for instance, any piece of drama.

I think a lot of Japanese humor is hilarious. Sometimes I find it funnier than western comedy, I have a lot of facepalm moments whenever a joke comes up in a show I'm watching, and I love it.

But I fully get that comedy in a serious anime can be disruptive and annoying, except for when it's believable. For example, in Juuni Taisen when you first meet the Tiger warrior, she's drunk and she's funny. That scene fits in with the serious nature of the anime because being funny when you're drunk is realistic.

I like comedy focused anime such as Konosuba and Welcome to the NHK, but when most of the anime is dramatic and serious, then the comedy feels out of place. Welcome to the NHK is about half comedy and half drama, which works. Fullmetal Alchemist comedy isnt very funny and is kinda forced sometimes. I love that show mainly for its drama. It kinda depends on the show cause some shows are better at comedy than others.

I've mixed feelings about comedy " Sometime comedy does make me laugh but sometime unexpected jokes takes away tension of the show " In anime like One Piece where it's seems like half of show is comedy and Magi where it shift of tone feel odd and it's like all of sudden it's comedy anime then it's dark anime .

I love humor when it's done well and a lot of comedy anime tend to do it very well. Gintama and asobi asobase made me laugh like crazy especially the former one because of the diversity in humor.

Hinamatsuri is by far the funniest anime I've seen. Kaguya-sama is also noteworthy. I think comedy is the most difficult genre to do well. That inherent difficulty is reflected in the large number of cringe inducing scenes in mediocre shows.

To be honest, I legitimately do not know how someone could like anime enough to have a mal account and dislike the entirety of anime humor. Considering that most anime have some form of comedy in them, that seems like way too high of a hurdle to get past.

Japanese comedy is hard to understand, lots of jokes are another word play and such, had a hard time watching gintama at first due to these type of jokes and Japanese history references.

There are plenty of amazing and funny Anime when they are done right however, if it starts to overtake a serious moment and kill off the story, it becomes very excessive.

For example, I REALLY wanted to like Trigun, I really did. At first, the comedy was fine, a bit unexpected, but went along with it but things kinda got a bit out-of-hand which my enjoyment went down hill.

I do like comedy in anime but certain times it's very bad, first to come to my mind is Demon Slayer because it's a popular series that I think of as the perfect example of the kind of comedy I do not like at all. Overall, I'm pro to comedy.

I only laughed at Dragon Ball, One Piece, Gintama, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure and Hitman Reborn. Only five out of all the anime I've seen. Like Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto, comedy ruins serious moments and comes off as corny, ruins important scenes. Shonen.. no any anime or manga should not add comedy unless they're certain it's going to make the audience laugh/won't ruin a serious moment. I hate when a "funny moment" is added in a scene when it's not necessary and ruins the intensity of the moment.

I like comedy in anime, but if it's a comedy anime it's a whole different story, I find it very boring.

Comedy in Anime ≠ Comedy Anime

For example, some fighting anime gets much better with a little coemdy.

It really depends on the subject matter for me. Whenever anime makes those jokes where dudes end up groping the lead girl's boobs or something it's like... ok, whatever man.

And when the same thing is made fun of over and over again with no twist, like how in Naruto they keep making jokes about how much of a dumbass Naruto is and how Sakura's constantly crushing on Sasuke; the jokes not only don't land, they crash into the runway.

A lot of anime comedy only works for me when it's not treated like comedy, so for example, how in Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha, Anos inadvertently flexes whenever he does even the most mundane shit and the series just treats it like you should take it seriously.
