yeah someone mentioned how the camera kept moving, and changing the perspective across a still seems to be how this studio is trying to get away with limited animation
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

I can stand the art style being what it is. What is really getring to me is the terrible direction. The conedic timing is terrible, and all the jump cuts makes it so hard to understand the fight scenes. And what the hell was with the panels on the screen after saitama killed the bird? They don't fit the style of the anime at all.

Honestly watching this episode makes me laugh a little because comedy at OPM is always interesting, it's just that the quality of animation is very bad and poor, why they portray genos so badly is very unfair in my opinion, and the robot makes my eyes hurt when I see fucking laser shots That, even though I was so impressed that I hadn't read the manga for a long time, and that opening I'd like to see soon next week

The animation itself isn't bad but for some weird reason the colouring or or something with the presentation is just off. There's a weird yellowish taint to it that stinks out for me which makes it a bit of an eyesore to watch sometimes.

Honestly the animations aren't even the problem. What really bothered me is the poor direction. There is literally no flow from scene to scene.

Second sexist esper sister finally getting some screentime, and the (basically) 2nd protagonist of the series managed to make an appearance at the end. The episode was much better than I thought after having my expectations set so low from the trailer and studio, but it's still obviously nowhere near S1's quality, as expected. Seems like it'll be fun for what it is though, and maybe the much better manga content it's adapting will help carry it.

If we talked about the story, obviously it's still great sf, the animation is not that great except genos fight you can tell J.C but some effort in it, hopefully the fighting scenes will live up to our expectations, it's interesting show i don't think the animation will define it

While season 1 elevated the manga, the manga is keeping this new season afloat. Thankfully, One's story doesn't need spectacular art (see the webcomic), but it still is disappointing. That being said, even though the animation is bad, and the art is now worse than the manga, it's still good. I remain grief-strickenly optimistic.

Haha, I'm glad my wishes came true. Episode 1 was definitely not as bad as trailer. Sure, you could see the downgrade of animation compared to Season 1, but it is really hard to create something do OPM that would be better than Season 1. Of course I was worried that maybe trailer actually presented true form of Season 2, but as for the first episode it ended up on worries only.

I enjoyed the art. It's different , but pleasant to watch. Animation was alright, especially in Genos vs. robot scene and when Saitama talked with King (I like King's new design, by the way).

Opening and its music were awesome. Not as good as Season 1, but they were very good anyway.

Whole episode was pretty dynamic and was very enjoyable to watch. Can't wait to see the next episode.

I liked it, it wasn't amazing and Genos' overly glossy armor looked weird but definitely watchable and no where as bad compared to previous JC Staff shows. Hoping the quality doesn't start plummeting after this.

It's really not that bad, it's decent. I can understand that it doesn't live upto how incredibly well made S1 was though.

I guess the problem is S1 set such huge expectations and none of that is gonna get met here. I suppose it wouldn't be a problem if it was some other show but OPM had such widespread recognition, a lot of people are gonna be disappointed.

Also, I don't think Genos's arms are CG as people were saying, it's probably a post effect of sorts.

It was a decent reintroduction to the series I guess and the Genos fight scene probably deserved some more flair since it's the opening episode but it's fine I guess.

After watching the PV, my expectations for One Punch Man Season 2 were pretty much cut in half....then you could probably cut that half in half as well. Needless to say I was really worried about Season 2 and how big of a meme it could potentially turn into once things were all said and done. The fans don't deserve that and the creator of this story most of all should not have that type of failure being associated with his work.

So, how bad did J.C. Staff mess this one up based off of the first episode? Let's start.

The art-direction (while far from the worst) is pretty questionable, with jarring changes made to our heroes that look awkward at best at times. Not horrendous, but definitely not great either. Barely passable I'd say. I've seen worse in this field. While stills (which I will get to later) have plagued this first episode, at least I can say the art looks decent in these moments.

Now, let's move on to easily the worst part of this episode, the animation. I noticed very early on that this wasn't going to be a fun ride. Looking at animation alone, this product looked like a complete joke (at times almost looking fan-made) and is definitely my biggest concern with the show going forward. There were so many scenes that felt like they were created simply to avoid worthwhile animation as much as possible. With so many stills and close-up shots, it defeats what this series is about in almost every way. Multiple times the way scenes were meshing with each other irritated me. Either being too close to the action or way too far away, I was left with a headache or two before the episode ended.

Spontaneous fighting scenes are what made this series what it is, so to see the fight in this episode down-scaled to the point of mediocrity...it's very disheartening as a huge fan of Season 1. The team were glaringly lazy in the animation field, which is arguably the most important thing you need to consider for an anime. There were only a couple of scenes that brought a positive reaction out of me. For a show that was previously met with such a high reputation, surely you can understand my large room for disappointment when watching this first episode.

Lastly I wanted to touch on the soundtrack and audio work a little bit. For the most part, the soundtrack seems pretty good. That familiar southern-sounding acoustic guitar is definitely welcome in the more calm scenes. The OP song by JAM Project (while it isn't better than Season 1) is pretty good, definitely shining best when the chorus hits. Animation-wise there is (yet again) a very noticeable dip in quality. It's still pretty good, but just not great. The audio FX and mixing felt a little weird at times, not meshing well with the VA's from what I heard. Go watch the fight scene again and maybe you will see what I mean. The effects, background music and the VA's were almost fighting for dominance over each other which sounded real messy and rushed to me. Hopefully they can get that type of stuff situated.

As a side note, Hulu desperately needs to go back and fix the subs for this episode. Most of the episode was not synced with the subs. Very annoying to watch in this state.

Overall I personally don't understand how things could have possibly gotten this bad with the production of the show. J.C. Staff has put out good-looking shows in the past, it's not like they aren't capable...right? The only conclusions I can reach are that either the budget held them back monumentally, or the Shonen genre is not a good much for this studio. At worst, it could be both reasons put together. The plot alone is what kept me in the episode because without it I know I wouldn't have been bothered to waste my time watching such dull, lifeless and completely uninspired execution of animating this story. With there being very few bright spots in this first episode, I'm left feeling very concerned with the next set of episodes. I hope that it cannot get much worse than this because frankly if it does, the anger from the fanbase could grow to be impossible for J.C. Staff to tame.

Long-ass review over.

I voted a two. Interesting enough to not drop the episode, but there's way too much wrong to give it a 3 or above. While this review is mainly negative, I hope for nothing but the best for the remainder of Season 2 because despite my criticisms Season 1 One Punch is easily one of my favorite Shonen and I can only hope for a sliver of that love to move on to Season 2.

Just to echo what a bunch of other people have been saying in this thread, while the animation is, at least, not a complete disaster, and can still manage some impressive and detailed action cuts like the first season, the real problem I had with this episode was the direction. Everything moved way too fast, with no real sense of flow, tension, setup, payoff, or pacing. It was just a jumble of Stuff Happening(tm) with no connective tissue, and it exacerbates the worst aspects of the animation in turn- the over-reliance on static images, the ugly digital processing, the stodgy camerawork, and so on. And it just utterly kills the flow of the story; I hardly felt anything over this entire episode, it was just so mushy and dull. I could see a OPM season managing to still survive and excel even with the aesthetic downgrade, but there's no way it's going to survive such amateurish direction if this is any indication of how the rest of the reason is going to turn out.

Of course, I'm still going to watch it to the end because I'm nothing if not a stubborn bastard. But man, this is going to be a miserable couple weeks until Attack on Titan hopefully picks up the Big Franchise slack.

True, I also watched for the animation originally. But now that OPM has an established fan base, you'd think it could get away with it.

it was okay i fell off OPM during this arc hard so when this got greenlight and J.C was doing it it was a hard sell to get me remotely hyped but they made it better than i was expecting.

only thing is the key selling points to a lot of people was the manga/art and bones and madhouse managing to bring that art to life with a lot of "time" and love however due to hearing the scheduling at JC and seeing how many damn anime's they are doing this is what we get you were only setting yourself for disappointment if you were hoping it would look just as good.

only question i'm asking myself is there much a need to watch this when we got the manga eh it's on a tuesday instead of a sunday/monday so i ant got much else to watch

will say this what the hell is up with genos face looks like it got squeezed lol

Well. This has finally arrived.
Needless to say, a downgrade is inevitable. JC's insane financial tactic of taking every famous franchise at the same time ruined everything like boats chained together catching on fire.

Is it unwatchable? Not really. It's really average but totally watchable. Classic JC cut corners like classic tween dodging can be found, but not as horrible as Date a Live thanks to the original staffs still being there.

I found episode 1 to be pretty on par with Fairy Gone in terms of enjoyability. The animation really held it back. It could have easily been the anime of the season, even above Kimetsu no Yaiba. As it stands, I'm personally more interested in seeing the next episode Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin than this >.>. I'd really place it slightly above Fairy Gone and a bit below Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin in my ratings, around a 6.50?
