| Eh. There are worse characters to see on top. Liking Kirito and Asuna is pretty much just like liking the Shield Hero and Raphtalia -and lots of people do that this season. It's just simple mathematics, really. The simpler a character is, the more universal his/her appeal because a lot of people can empathize with his/her struggles. The struggles are common enough and broad enough that it can call similarities with their own personal struggles and demons. Sure, the viewers are not in the same situation per se to Kirito and Asuna. They are not trapped in a death game. But the struggles of isolation and love that the characters go through are familiar and easy to grasp. (Now that I really think about it, maybe my perception of Kirito and Asuna has been altered so much by their Abridged counterparts (Abridged Kirito's beautiful character arc especially) that when I think Kirito/Asuna, I think of the Abridged version's personalities and character growth. So maybe that's why I don't find them too problematic anymore.) |

| They are pretty bland characters but there are far worse. I would guess that a lot of people don't really mentally separate the main characters from the show and so will have their favourite characters as the MCs from their favourite shows, even if those characters aren't that great. |

| They actually do have personalities, but even if they didn't, a character's personality isn't the only thing that may be the deciding factor for people to like a character. They might be favourited for their designs, or for the actions they make in the anime, or -- mainly in Kirito's case -- for their ability to kick butt in cool visuals. |
| Mhhh I don't hate Asuna, but Kirito is indeed a pretty emotionless character in the anime. In the books Kirito imo is a good character, even if he is edgy as usual he has lot of characterization. So expecting young teens who spend their days playing games to have any deeper personality is hilarious. But now off to the question itself, why these characters are so popular: 1 SAO is popular 2 SAO excels in something I call draw/pull I derived from the german word "Sog". This term tries to describe the suction of the story, the way the story makes you ask "what will happen next?" , how it motivates you to keep coming back each week or binge watch eveything in one go. .This doesn't mean that the story has to be unique, deep, have a message or leave an impression changing the viewer. Yet it is still a quality of a story, an important one if you want to keep the audience and especially the increasingly impatient watchers that are simply not willing to invest unconditionally time into any show and want rewards fast and now (making longer buildups like in older shows nearly impossible). [If anyone knows the correct cynematic term for this quality of a show please tell me] 3 There is a phase in SAO 1 where the 2 characters relation develops. In those few chapters around the house buy and the online marriage these 2 characters openly show their affection to each other . This is fucking nonexistent in most shows and even more in action. Relations in most shows are just about teasing or the way to the relationship. Too often they are oversexualised and superficial or nonexistent virtual projections of the viewers (shipping). My god you can be happy if in a Romance someone ends up with someone or if there is a kiss. I don't say that the depiction of the relation of the two is perfect. There is a lot tension and potential that the show completly neglected later. But in those few episodes in the first arc they managed to show something that is rare especially in action oriented shows. And that created a strong attachment of the people. |

It’s still popular to this day it’s not that the fact that “they didn’t have taste back then” it’s the fact that a lot of people like this show and the books (the books are a lot better in my opinion) and people should like whatever they like and shouldn’t be told by some random person on the internet that there favorite show is trash I never once stated that it isn't still popular, I only mentioned when it started to become popular. Though it is true that tastes do evolve, and you do begin to identify what you believe to be good or bad. Heck, I thought SAO was decent when I first watched it. Also, by the same token, a random person on the internet shouldn't tell me that a show isn't trash. An opinion is an opinion. Because Kirito is a self-insert hero and Asuna is his waifu. Such characters usually have a sparsely pronounced personality so that as many viewers as possible can self-insert themselves into the protagonists. |
