What I mean by that is do you like or dislike anime/manga inspired by western counties or do you prefer your anime 100% Japanese?

Examples being Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist & Hellsing being inspired by Europe. As well as My Hero Academia being inspired by American Superheroes.

Personally I enjoy European influence somewhat, but don't like Nazi influenced ideas. I also can't help but cringe at All Might yelling out American cities when he attacks in MHA. In terms of American influence, I like shows like Bacanno & 91 Days, but hate American fanboy-ism influenced shows.

So overall I prefer my anime less westernised. How about you?

i like some westernized. cowbop and space cobra were good imo. then we have things like baccano and 91 days reminiscent of old mob films so can't go wrong there.

Preferably less, but certainly with some Westernization features.

I’m not a fan of hearing All Might’s chants either nor was big fan of Cowboy Bebop but I love Shingeki no Kyojin and Baccano. Basically, just little vital Western details and the remaining all Japanese.

I don't care, anime can do what it wants, All Might likes saying English words? Nice. FMA/:B takes inspiration from Europe and the Middle East? Sure. Bear wants to marry a high school boy and make him his wife? Amazing.

eh like I have no problem with it if its done in a way I dont see as lazy
like how Watanabe just adds rap to Shamploo or has fake terrorism in Zankyou no Terror and makes Space Dandy specifically for America basically were nothing in the show happens and its just filler

I have no special love nor hate for Japan; it's just another setting. But, probably because I didn't grow up there and have never lived there, I don't really preferentially seek out things that are set in Japan, nor do I particularly care for things like Japanese school settings.

I find that I tend to prefer stuff in fantasy and sci-fi settings anyway, which often involves settings that may have Japanese elements but are largely culture-neutral.

And frankly, even the series that are set in Japan that I've seen, I think the most important things in the story are generally the "universal" elements, like emotions of love, loss, happiness, sadness, etc. -- the cultural elements like culture festivals or school uniforms or language-specific puns or whatever really just not too different than the trappings of a fictional culture, since it's always one that's foreign to me anyway. Once one looks past these elements one realizes that they are being used to express shared human traits.

For the Nazi thing, I'm going to clarify that Germany had a pretty militant history before the Nazis, and I can see a lot of that kind of history in stuff like FMAB and AoT, Japan has always kind of been into militant stuff and they are quite frankly brilliant at coming up with uniforms. The FMA live action wasn't that good but the uniforms were spot on (clearly native Japanese blonde wig silent risa... why was she in it again?)
I do like when they have a truly western setting though, something like hellsing ultimate, set mostly in the UK (Japan senpai noticed me!) I have only heard the dub though, and totally blaming the dubbers for this, but virtually everyone but alucard has a forced stereotypical accent, serus sounds like a cokny flower girl being butchered, integra sounds like a bitch in tea and all the Germans sound like the major, there's also the weird case of that sword wielding Japanese girl sounding like a valleys girl. While I'm on hellsing, though I do think it's quite a good setting what I've seen Japan do for Nazis isn't that good, most Nazis (that are actually Nazis) in anime just seem to be evil for the sake of evil, as if Japan never really understood what Nazi ideology was during the war

mmmm most of the time i actively ignore it. I did enjoy cowboy bebop and hunterxhunter (1999) but those the only example i can think of. I'm a mad sucker for historical Japanese stories and things with Japanese/Chinese/Korean folklore. I already live in the West and i dont really watch anime or read manga for that aspect ya feel?

You cringe? Man, that shit is high-larious. Although, Midoriya definitely ruins it. Baha!

Anyway, I like anime set in the West. Depending on the subject matter, it can be easier to get into. Shows that dive head first into Japanese history and culture can be difficult to completely understand. Especially if you aren't familiar with the culture and people.

Personally, I wish there were more police dramas in anime. The US has too many and Japanese anime has too few.

All in all, I like a mixture of both. Its also nice seeing shows not set in the West or Japan. Arslan Senki is a good example.

You're mixing setting locations with story inspiration.
AoT and FMA are in a European setting/location, but that doesn't equate to the story being inspired by Europe.
Those stories could take place anywhere, they just happened to be in Europe.

Hellsing is based/inspired by an existing story created in the West, not by a Country.

Please be more specific... are you talking about anime actually inspired by things in Western Countries, or anime with the setting being in a Western Country?

You're never too old to watch anime.

I don't jugde an anime by their setting or nationality, be it Japanese, European or American. I jugde anime by the content of their plot (and the plot if possible).

Noir has a great setting in France and parts of the EU and they touch the concepts of cabals and mafias ruling the world. Little Witch Academia is a very Westernized anime, even more than Kill la Kill, and I enjoyed a lot. Most of the fantasy world of Zero no Tsukamia is reminiscient of Medieval Europe, even the countries' names are very close to their current counterparts. In contrast, I disliked Mahoutsukai no Yome because it stalled in the second half, despite its rural English setting. Ao no Exorcist has a full spectre of Christian (read Western) religion and mythology, and I found it relatively mediocre.

I also don't mind animes with Westerners and Japanese, like Kiniro Mosaic (Karen Kujou FTW) whose yuri is so cute and cleverly made, and the misunderstandings with the English cuties makes it more sugary. Similarly, Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai was a terribly boring anime with equaly terribly boning characters, despite the Europeans Teresa and Alec were very cute.

The title should be do you like anime that take place in Western settings. Originally I thought this was going to be a discussion on American cartoons that are inspired by anime like ATLA.

As for the topic yeah I tend to like it not even just Western European settings but just different settings in general. As a guy who reads a lot about Western history it is a lot of fun to see it get represented or see aspects of it represented in anime/manga (Vinland Saga) though I can say the same for other cultures like Ancient China/Korea when they get represented (Yona of the Dawn and Kingdom). Variety is always a good thing and I appreciate it when they do branch out more. Keeps things fresh when I go back and watch a more Japanese based SOL series. Occasionally you might find a few weird things here and there or really over stereotyped depictions (who doesn't do that) but hey its fun to see Japan portray other cultures I actually wish we saw more manga and anime that ventured out in this regard.

As for MHA I mean that is the point isn't it that its Japan and American manga and comics slapped together. I have heard many say MHA feels like a Sunday morning cartoon and I can see that to some degree. All Might's whole persona is being the good shining over the top stereotypical hero a way more exaggerated form of Superman and Captain America. For you maybe there is too much in that regard but I think the average Japanese audience it really doesn't bother them as they are less exposed to American culture compared to the average westerner (though still heavily influenced by it). The intention really was to make X-Men/Marvel in anime/manga form might not be your type of series then. Also I am confused how we go from taking about Western settings and then you connect it with nazi inspired ideas?? I mean exploring ideas like nationalism, imperialism and its appeal can be quite interesting if done right. Those are ideas aren't exclusive to the West either (I mean we are talking about Japan right now who successfully exported those beliefs to Asia lol).

Not really, a lot of anime I really enjoy are very western influenced. Both in location and even artwork sometimes. I like European settings, I love FMA’s setting. It gives me a nice break after seeing the same old Japanese schools over and over again.
Location does really matter to me, the anime’s just gotta be good

Eh, I guess stuff like that never really mattered to me. It's not like western themes ever really affected the anime as a whole. It's kinda like how there's so many anime girls named Alice; not like it affects anything overall

I don't need anime to be 100% Japanese, I'm pretty much fine with European settings or even some other Asian country for that matter but I do tend to dislike the ones set in or overly influenced by America, I'm not sure why but I just can't like any of those characters or even the music.

anime started out as being inspired by disney animations, don't really see any reason to dislike modern anime having western influences
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

Yeah, it honestly makes me cringe lol. All Might fights were always hype and it ruined them a bit for me. I agree on the police drama idea, not many at all, not sure why. One of my favourite J Drama shows is actually a police drama, it's called Beginners!

I used to really be turned off by anime being super ingrained in Japanese culture, which sounds bad but take into effect that I always felt like stuff was going over my head and honestly it's worse now because there is no [Translator Notes] or index to read about the references or cultural background of the media.

Now I love to research the series and interviews and though people talk mad shit on here about Anitubers, they're super helpful when it comes to that.

So really I love a mixture of both.

Given how an overwhelming majority of anime is predominantly based on japanese culture, I see 'westernized' anime to be a nice thing to have.

Although, it could fun to have some more inclusion of Scandinavian (well there's Vinland Saga), middle east (there's Arslan Senki and Magi), Indian as well as latin american cultures into the foray.

Regardless, the setting has very little impact on the execution. The latter of the two is undoubtedly more important than the former, no matter how good or unique the setting is.

Nah. I like variety in anime. One of my all-time favorites is a Space Western, a genre which I love, especially in anime, and I guess you could consider JoJo's Bizarre Adventure a westernized anime of sorts as the first arc takes place in Victorian England, and Joseph's part takes place partly in the U.S. and later Italy and Switzerland. Jotaro's arc starts off in Japan, but he soons leaves. That's as far as I have gotten so far, with JoJo.
