The visuals in this episode paired up with the story! OMG! I couldn't hold back my tears as well. I honestly didn't expect the birthday greets every year, that was so sad..such a good ending to an episode. My rating for this anime is getting higher and higher!

I bawled my eyes out. Such a beautiful episode. If this anime can't get any better, this episode proved me wrong. It just keeps on adding goodness on top of goodness. This one hit me hard as my mom is currently in a different country to visit her family so this episode really reminded me the importance of your mother being by your side. Three more episodes left!

I kept thinking who the letters were for... It was so obvious all the time that it was for Ann. I didn't anticipate that I would tear up after it was revealed. Ann was so bratty but I actually liked it because it added a touch to the episode where she really loves her mother and vice-versa. Violet crying sealed the episode perfectly. I'm starting to change my initial rating from 9 to 10, who knows?

majority of the episode was just flat out uninteresting. The end however was sweet. Just the thought of this mom leaving a letter for 50 years shows how much she cares. Though im curious what the 50th letter says since its the last one and theres a chance her daughter will be still alive.

Even though I knew this is "feels" anime and I quickly grasp what all episode gonna be about since first 5 minutes, I couldn't help myself anyway, I was holding it like another 5 to 10 minutes, then straight up cried like a little b*tch whole 15 minutes, I was not ready for this, it's my weakness. I think I am gonna cry till morning now. Why am I doing this to myself?

Violet Evergarden is such beautiful peace of art between anime.

Such a simple, predictable story, yet at the same time full of beautiful nuance, directing, exposition, and it still hits you right in the feels when you can see the reveal coming. That's a sign of masterful storytelling, directing, storyboarding, voicework, writing, everything...

Nodame Ayako Kawasumi voicing in this episode brought a smile to my face as well :)

PS: I watched the Blu-ray version and re-watched a clip of the episode on YouTube. The ending music when Anne reads her mom's letter for her 8th birthday is different. It's a remix or full version of Michishirube in the TV broadcast, but in the Blu-ray version it's a tranquil, subdued, sweet instrumental piece. I definitely prefer the BD version as it fits the atmosphere better IMO.

I'd been holding tears since episode three, this episode is an exception.

Not sure what the tears are for, a heartbreaking moment of separation of a loving mother from her daughter, the touching letters that she requested to write for her daughter each birthday, the joy to find out that Violet is no longer emotionless or simply because Violet's crying contains the real sadness within itself which has moved me.

Didn't cry like most did during this episode, but still was quite sad. Aside from feeling a bit melodramatic, the episodic format of this anime really hinders its emotional impact.

Despite that, the timeskip scene was incredible. Seeing Anne grow up and read her late mother's letters was beautiful.

The fact that Anne's mom wrote all those letters to comfort her daughter after her death gives me chills just thinking about it.

Good episode. Gets an 8/10 just for the ending.

After more than an hour trying to assimilate this episode, and most importantly, trying to get back from the big crying at almost the end of the episode. I may say that it made me even sadder when I still had the fresh memories of Violet's past with the Major. I watched Ep 8-10 just today and it hurt me much more when it was already dark when Ep-10 was almost finished.

I was trying to hold my tears back all the day, that's why I also took breaks between the episodes. But at the end, when Anne started to read her first letter, I literally couldn't stop crying and I didn't remember nothing more, then I calmed a bit, but watching Violet-chan crying, I became a literal mess and that was it. Way too much feelings for me, today.

I guess giving Violet Evergarden a 10 is justified, but unfair for VE because it doesn't reflect how beautifil this anime is. So for now on, Violet Evergarden will not have a rating, it's way over the numerical scale of MAL, I may even say that's ethereal and Godlike.

This might be the best ep so far in terms of how enjoyable it is for me!

At first, I was quite annoyed by the little girl's attitude, but she's a child, after all, maybe a tsundere in the making. I was thinking that the letters have something to do with how the mother's properties will be inherited to Anne and other things related to money, etc... However, it's just now the case! The 50 letters that were written over 7 days period were all for Anne all along! The other knew her time is limited, so this is a way to talk to Anne even after her death. This is actually brilliant and sad at the same time... After all, Anne was not even 10 yet when her mother died, just as Violet said, she's so you and yet she has to undergo all of this. Seeing her grow up felt so heartwarming, and knowing that her mother's letter will reach her for 50 years, every year is reassuring.

I was wondering, why was Violet so emotionless during the entire ep, especially during the scene where everyone cried when Anna knew her mother's time was limited. I thought after these past few eps, Violet should've reacted since she has understood other people's and her own emotions better. But wow, she was holding her tears all along! Seeing her cry after holding it all just made me want to tear up alongside her too... (T^T)

A beautiful episode this is... A perfect combination of focus on the characters beside the core main characters, and Violet's own emotions. This is simply a superior episode to the episode revolving around the writer who lost his daughter IMO. Well done... I was literally smiling seeing Anna grow up while I feel the rush of feels with the tears on my eyes.

This is the closest this Anime has actually brought me to tears, I won't lie I got some blurry vision out of this. The author's episode was more emotion packed than this one, but I couldn't help but relate to this one more.
It actually broke me when I realized that those letters were for her, that is wild. I hope the series continues down this path, no more torturing for Violet.

Everyone would tell me, when you get to episode 10 your tears won't stop overflowing. But with all the sad events that happened so far, I was like noway that there will be a sadder episode but never have I been this wrong before ...
It was very well put together, it is simple yet detailed, I do not know how they did it but they made us connected with the characters within one episode, and empathize with them with every piece in our heart!

Oh fuck... I honestly never cried at this anime even during that heartbreaking scene when Violet tried to commit suicide but this episode really got to me. I have a weak spot for mothers' love and this episode was just beautifully-done and the surprised reactions from the other Dolls after seeing Violet cry is a testament of Violet's growth as a character.

I guess we're back to the episodic stories now. Not that I'm complaining since I did love this episode a lot and Violet has finally gotten the resolve to keep living in the last episode but I'm guessing they'll save up Dietfried for the final episode or something. I'm really curious about the guy. I hope we get to see more of Violet's past as well before getting in the military. I wanna know how she ended up in that state.

Violet Evergarden continues to demonstrate how profound & poetic it is as it leads us through each heartrending tragedy and towards the uplifting beauty that can still be found in this world. While Ann's mother had to sacrifice the time they spent together while she was alive, she did it so that she could watch over & inspire Ann for the rest of her life.

Btw, there is a japanese movie that had very similar setup to this chapter (iirc the movie name is birthday card), maybe the writer took inspiration from there

Wow, I’ve been crying for the last hour or so now...

Another bittersweet episode, Violet breaking down in tears and seeing Ann growing up and reading those letters plus those intricate and amazing shots totally hit the feels for me. I’ve always been a little vulnerable to motherly love like this but this was definitely another top-notch episode! Violet, you did well!

Such a beautiful series and this episode still remains one of the most emotional episodes in anime.
