Every single episode after 5 or 6 has just been 20 minutes of me shouting at the screen for them to "GO DO THINGS". The progression has slowed to a grinding halt and I no longer care if either Riko or Reg die, in fact I want both to because at least they could start over. I loved the first three episodes but man this show sucks now. I don't care about Markula (sp?) saying goodbye, y'all were there for a little over ten days. Fuck you, you don't get to be THAT attached to anyone. Screw this show, I hate it for wasting time after episode three.

They were there over four weeks dude(said in ep7),10 days thing was only survival training,it makes perfect sence for poor kid to get attached to first kids his age that ever visited seeker camp and cry when his new friends going futher on journey of no return and he will never see them again alive,is this so hard to understand?Btw from your words you actually may really enjoy next episode, though if you don't care about any characters and worldbuilding then show clearly not for you.

Can anyone tell me if the song in the beginning when they are saying goodbye is an actual song I can find or just a stand alone piece for the show?

Could be wrong, but everywhere I look people point to the song name being Hanezeve Caradhina๏ปฟ. Pretty sure it won't be officially released till the ost comes out. Couldn't find any YT videos of it from lazy search.

Rly did not like this episode.
I understand Riko beeing helpless against ozen or at least once in a while, but to make her almost fully rely on Reg is very saddening to see.
The parts where she actually tried to do something and use her knowlage about the abyss were great. I dont get why they made Reg shoot the final blow. It seems very out of character for Riko to do this. And there was no reason for it. She knew how to use the weapon she was aiming at the creature but she still decided "no better Reg be the hero il keep on cooking food and vomiting".
This seems to me to be very out of character for her . Atleast from the impression she made in the first episodes.

@Pkingforests

Dude, she's a small human kid. Even if she were to hit the beast w/ that weapon, what guarantee there was that it wouldn't endure the pain and then devour/crush her? It was already stretching it, that the weapon was so effective against the beast. In RL, if you were to shoot a lion in the side of its head, it'd not stop it from rushing to you.

I was scared for Riko every time she walked away from Reg. And then he tells her to stay in one place for two hours, but she can't 'cause apparently, she'll die if she doesn't eat in the next two hours ๐Ÿ˜…

But I guess she learned her lesson at the end there, so hopefully, she won't walk off on her own anymore :P

Riko is a true adventurer, always getting in trouble but always finding a way out of it. And I'm thankful for witnessing her adventures.

Also liked the hallucination sequence, short and to the point.

That is true. The weapon situation might as wel have been Reg using it. But my concern still stays the same they could have made it her redeeming moment, maybe change the scenario on how she was attacked or something, to make her more self reliant atleast. Stop reg from being pushed to be the white knight cliche

Now I get why I'm not enjoying this anime so much.

There's obviously not much plot details--just characters exploring and discovering a new place. Unlike Dark souls where you explore but also learn all this cool lore about the places you go to.

And it's just not that exciting. I want to see this kids SUFFER. I want to scream, HOLY F*CKING SH*T WHAT'S HAPPENING!

And Riko...God, she's so boring. She's always in Genki mode. Whenever she talks, it's either exposition, or something that we all know, like, "I wouldn't make it this far without you", yeah, no shit girl, without Robobro, you'd be dead in ep 4.

Compared to other hallucination scenes I've seen, this one just felt...bland. Like, really predictable and obvious. I'd love it if in the hallucination the other characters would be trying to tempt Riko to give up on her journey in a lot more interesting way.

But she's just a kid. Her hallucination is limited by her imagination. It just felt natural for the hallucination to be so simple and simply about her goal. There was really nothing else going on in her head.

Well, it's civilization that creates lore; and in those layers there wasn't... And they weren't there to document creatures and such, but to go through layers as best as they can.

Age doesn't matter. People of all ages can have all sorts of hallucinations.
There could've been one of her friends trying to actually convince her to give up. Something like, "you'll die down here, there's no point", or, "your mom is most likely dead".

Like I said, there was really nothing else going on in her head besides her want to find her mom. And this desire became stronger in the more dire situation she was in. Throughout the episodes, she's not been shown to be missing the kids--so yeah, she wasn't thinking about them at all. While she had been forming a strong bond with Reg.
Age matters in which the imagination is limited by the amount of things the person knows. So can't ask much of her--what do you think some kid that hasn't really seen much in life can imagine? So she can't imagine things complex; can't expect much.

She's a 12 year old, going into an Abyss, just to find her mom who is 50/100 chance likely dead, while aware of how terrible, that Abyss is.
Doubt, fear, uncertainty, regret, every insane emotion you can think of, should be happening in her head.
If anything, the fact that she's a child, should make her hallucinations a lot more rampant.

I feel like this series could have been more popular but the style might turning people off. It's really good, in my opinion but the animation style might not appeal to many people. It looks very Final Fantasy Tactics-esque and not everyone likes that. They like generic-looking characters with nosebleeds and shit.

Those cute little squirrel things, the neritantan. They're so fucking adorable and savage Riko's all like, "We should be thankful to them... their meat is delicious." LOL

She even wanted to eat the madokajack thing. Those neritantans blocked their way, they be like, "You ate us, motherfucker. Now, suffer."

Riko just stabbed that purple blob to save her and Regu. She may be capable after all. :) Of course the neritantans tried to eat her afterwards.

Poor Riko hallucinating....

That is a fucking awesome weapon. Looks like a weapon you'd find in an RPG.

The narrator's voice, this time, is well engrossed in the story, always giving a lot of emphasis to the adventure that awaits the two protagonists. The narration adds another piece to Riko's understanding of how intelligent she is, but also too cumbersome. The designs are always divine, as quality.

Reg: Riko, I'm about to pass out; just stay here...
Riko: Okay!
*five seconds later*
Riko: Shit I'm hungry, time to go
Me: REEEEEEEEEEEEE

The visuals in this show are amazing, especially the monsters. I really liked the one of Riko slicing through the creature's stomach, the blood gushing, and then her sliding out with the stomach fluids.

"Sounds like you have a fetish, CatSoul." No god damn it I realize it sounds like that but I just appreciate how cool it was.

The third layer definitely is powerful. Riko was reminding herself of all the effects (including "visual and auditory hallucinations"), and yet the hallucination with her mom was still powerful enough to get to her for a little bit.

Heading into the fourth layer! I see we're picking up the pace a bit.

Riko was so annoying in this episode that I actually wouldn't have cared if she died, because she would've brought it upon herself. It's one thing to be enthusiastic and adventurous, quite another to be an absolute moron who lacks even the least bit of awareness of her surroundings. Carelessly walking straight into unknown places, yelling inside dark caves when you know the entire place is crawling with giant predators, and then needlessly running around and putting someone else's life in danger. And after all this her dumb ass once again needed to be saved by Reg.

As a testament to how hollow this show has been, if you just take out Riko's ignorance to everything going on around her, this show would have next to no conflict up to this point. That's not even subtracting out her incredible over reliance on Reg.

As many have said on this thread, it's hard to take the story seriously when Riko is so obviously opposed to any form of logic. It's a nice gesture at the very least that she finally "understands" how hard Reg has been carrying her (the depth of her understanding has yet to be seen), but how could she have possibly not known this before? To immediately take off after Reg explicitly and desperately tells her to wait kind of just shows a disrespect to his opinion, and makes me much more disengaged from the story if all the strife is going to be driven from her idiocy.

If they want to play the "child of the abyss" card and say she's helplessly drawn to it, then they need to make that theme more obvious. Because from where I'm sitting, I see a willfully ignorant genki girl devoid of logic.

I always have to remind myself that Riko is only 12 whenever I get pissed off at her for falling for obvious traps or running off on her own for stupid relics >:T she's lucky she didn't get her and Reg digested =___=

At least she mentally beat the hallucination part, so I'll give her that. If she had run towards the Orth crowd of people, she would've fallen off the cliff and died.

Made in Abyss is a story about a boy with superpowers, named Reg, who is on babysitting duty and who, after a while of the toddler Riko's nagging, has no choice but to accept her wishes of going out for a stroll within the deepest level of Abyss.

Riko really hurt her head near-after when she was born so she hasn't grown a brain yet; so it is up to Reg to save her from every terror she runs smiling towards to. Even if the level of terrors seem to grow more horrifying further and further along the levels of the Abyss.

Good luck Reg! We believe in you!

hahahaha This is exactly how I feel about the show so far. These characters are so stupidly childish and cliche it hurts. And yeah I know they're 12 but this is dumb even for 12 year olds. Look at HxH for a smart 12 year old.

You got your dumb protagonist who wants to follow in the footsteps of their father/mother/older brother etc.
You got Reg, the most interesting character for sure, who goes through the whole 'lose their memories but you know they have some important role' shtick, who serves as the only reason Riko is not a pile of mush in this world.
Even Ozen who is arguably the third most developed character in the show is the stereotypical 'cold-hearted but means well' character where they supposedly hated Riko for some reason that didn't really make sense and was more just to add unnecessary buildup to this mysterious character.

And this show has had 9 episodes to develop these characters and this world as well but iit just feels like its dragging. The ratings its getting are probably why I'm so annoyed as I've expected much better.

Everything worked out but Riko should really listen to Reg when he asks her to stay right there

She never listens and repeatedly gets herself into trouble, causing her to fall right into the damsel in distress trope. It's obvious that she's very knowledgeable about the Abyss, but it feels like she's equal parts foolish and brave.

Had she defeated the crimson splitjaw herself while Reg was out of commission, it would've restored some of my faith in her and made her seem more reliable. Unfortunately she got saved by Reg (again) and didn't learn anything from her mistakes (again).

She realized she never would've made it without Reg, but it doesn't matter if she remains reckless and selfish.

But that's a character flaw that's not going to be solved in a manner of a couple of episodes. Hell, it was even said that she's no where near of conquering her rashness by Ozen herself.

Not only that--it's not a bad thing that a character is flawed. The way I see it: so much of the tension comes from the fact that Riko is your typical, anime protagonist who is way out of her element, but makes it up by being endlessly optimistic--which would be fine if this were your typical anime adventure series. Made In Abyss is not your typical anime adventure series. And that's where the dissonance comes in: It's this plucky, energetic girl in a setting in which some terrible things are happening in the background. That's what makes the show subtley terrifying: that at any turn Riko could be ripped apart.

Rikos nativity is borderline retarded. Having once been read doesn't begin to explain why she is so incredibly stupid.

She literally showed that she is as stupid as those mouse creatures for falling for that trap. Asides from cooking and naming creatures, she's done nothing useful.

Pure adventure with breathtaking views this episode. I love it!
The curse of the abyss is shown when Riko climbed the upward slope, even for that height, it could really affect her. If she were to do this again when she's further below, she would be bleeding and then transformation?!

It's nice to see Riko reuniting with her mom, friends and everyone else. even though all of them are just illusions...

I love this anime, I really do but I have one problem with it.

Do they HAVE to keep constantly showing Riko puke!?

Like, we get it. Ascension makes humans sick. You can show this without being so GRAPHIC about it; like leaving the sound in while doing a discretion shot but you don't have to zoom in on that shit hitting the floor; that's f*cking disgusting.

And HOW the f*ck did she puke anyway if she had nothing to eat!?

It's like the show has a fetish for this....and frankly, it's disturbing.

That scene where riko goes up the ramp.. just a perfect showcase how the curse of abyss is that much more dangerous this time and how she has a very strong relationship with req.
Definietly my favourite scene from this ep.
Riko actually can do something by herself! I thought this will never happen.
I also liked this scene where they were in the stomach of this creature, when riko stabbed him there was something so satisfying about it, idk XD

For a 4000 meter layer, it went by surprisingly fast but I guess that's what happens when the only way through is straight down~ As for the poor floofy creatures, it's either them or them lol

It's nice to see Riko handle the Abyss on her own for once despite running into all sorts of close calls but ultimately it's their codependent relationship that got them that far in the first place.

That pickaxe sure is handy and I'd like to see if it'll be used like a badass version of a pickaxe later on~ I think she managed to handle the strain of the 3rd layer's curse because she didn't ascend as quickly as she was forced to by the corpse weeper and the elevator.

So, in 1 episode, they make it from the 2nd level to the 4th level. PLOT ARMOR. No one can descend that fast.

I hate Riko. She just fell for a trap. TWICE. I knew they were traps and she still fell for them. What a idiot. If you include the visual illusions too, it makes 3. She didn't see her mom after all, so she should have known.

Not only that, they should have had a watch to keep track of time. I don't know why they don't have that basic apparatus.

Yeah, without Reg you wouldn't have lasted a second on the street. I am actually surprised that she is that foolish to realize it just now.

Riko is reckless as fuck. Don't keep running for relics you fool. I wish you die slowly and get eaten by those creatures.

If these levels were that easy, I would have reached the bottom of the abyss before completing this series. I hate the white whistles. They could have saved a lot of lives by giving this valuable info.

How does that glasses classmate know that they are on level 3 and not on level 4? They used 10 days for training. This anime has not a good plot as I thought. I need better stuff if you have to justify your hype.

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. Living without power, without the ability to change my course, was bound to lead me to a slow death.
