You have the courage to post this , all my respect to you OP

I know you'll be eaten by shaft haters but I'll respond seriously

As a shaft hater , I don't see its animation good .. this studio stops the screen on a good picture and let the characters talk , this is called economy of the money , i know it's hard to undrstand
This studio knows how to cheat on ppl by giving them shiny , bright and vivid colors and drawings .. also I don't usually judge a studio from the animation cuz it's pointless tbh , you should judge them from their produced shows , shaft only has the monogatari series (the eternal ongoing series) and mahou shoujo madoka which are not that amazing or that popular tho ..

So I just want to answer your opinion with my opinion since at least you explained why and didnt post some random pics.

This toic was doomed to become an classic opinion wars on MAL anyways.

To me animations is never the important point of an anime(as for you it seems). For example ufotable. What makes them so popular is their animation. Other than that we are watching a eroge plot without eroge part. Nothing special imo.

"I don't see its animation good"
-> You are right. They are not good at animation. Because they choose to adapt show that require static movement. I am fine with it tbh. I also wonder how they will adapt the new Fate for that reason.

"shaft only has the monogatari series (the eternal ongoing series) and mahou shoujo madoka"
-> Have to point that out but this is being ignorant.

"which are not that amazing or that popular tho"
-> Both has a very big fanbase in Japan "and" also for the rest of the world. I dont know how many people you need to say this show is popular so yea. But again I think you are being ignorant again in here.

DEEN masterrace amiright?
Legit though, these topics are largely pointless since we should be talking more about directors and original authors than studios.

I don't like Shaft. A lot.

There are far better studios out there (Bones, Kyoro Aniamtion, etc.)
Help the industry and buy Blu-rays and DVD's.
Noragami is the best anime ever.

Each to their own taste but SHAFT is one of my low anime studios. When I see a anime done by SHAFT, I am usually unhappy about it. Looking at the Fate series from SHAFT, I just dont feel like watching it.

I think the appeal of Shaft is that their style is "different" and looks very "unique".

Is it better than other animation styles? Personally, yeah, they are. I would see why people would disagree though.

All the other animation studios (not all obviously) feel sort of the same in terms of style. A (bad) analogy would be that every (modern) pop song sounds the same. What I like about Shaft is that they are a breath of fresh air. Maybe like how rock and roll was a breath of fresh air in the past (again bad analogy) (maybe a better analogy would be prog rock but yeah).

Context: I am an anime newbie; the only Shaft anime I watched is Monogatari
(but yeah I hope my insight would be interesting/helpful nonetheless)
(also even bad analogies present insightful comparisons)
Puns, sarcasm, irony, references, inside jokes, and memes.
These are what make life worth living.

I would say they are one of the best.
Profit is definitely the best parameter measuring a company's success. Shaft indeed made some of the best-selling series of all time. Bakemonogatari and Magic Madoka are ranked 2nd and 5th in term of average BD sales in Japan anime history.
But Shaft is still a relatively new studio. Besides that 2 huge success, they only have about 4 other anime that are worthy mentioning:
1. Goodbuy, Despair-Sensei
2. Nisekoi
3. Hidamari Sketch
4. March's Lion
This makes Shaft seem pretty weak compared to Kyoani or Sunrise who have a bunch of successful anime.
I would say Shaft is one of the best, but I can't say it is the best.

Shaft has like 3-4 series with their ''iconic visuals'' that apparently really stand out, most of what they've produced is generic stuff that you wouldn't even guess it's by Shaft if you're only familiar with them due to Monogatari, Mekakucity Actors, Zetsubou Sensei, Nisekoi, Madoka Magica or 3-gatsu No Lion.

They're still nowhere near giants like Sunrise or Kyoto Animation.
As both of those have way more successful works in their repertoire.

Besides, I don't think Shaft has really made anything that good.
Monogatari series are just decent, Madoka Magica is a plot hole infested edgefest, Mekakucity Actors' structure is a mess, Nisekoi... we all know about Nisekoi, no need to even say anything.

3-Gatsu and Zetsubou-Sensei are probably the only things Shaft has done that I can think of as good.

Pretty much the only decent anime is Nisekoi as I've tried the other Shaft series and it was just BAD.

Shaft seems to be really good with shows that have a large amount of dialogues , like for example the gatari series which is indeed a great adaptation. Most of their works are moe animes tho , the most action packed thing i recall would be the gatari movies which recently aired. They're good but they don't excel in all types of anime genres

pretty sure most dialogue heavy shaft series is sayonara zetsubou sensei which pretty good while action heavy shaft is dance in the vampire bund which also does pretty shit... as for moe... oh well, it's really mixed bag, from hidmari sketch whcih pretty good to kofuku grafity which just stright insulting...

Why you quoting yourself?
Well.. I would say Shaft doing things cleverly, even the Ecchi. I don't really fond of fanservice yet Monogatari is still engaging and fun in their own way. I still look away if the scene is too erotic, though.

Is it safe to assume the thread is dead the moment OP doesn't even bother comes from the first page?

There's a site I saw sometime on MAL forums displaying the top selling series and both of those were at top. Maybe Eva and Gundam outsold them in the DVD section? As they are both quite old anime

They've outsold them in general.
IIRC ,Monogatari and Madoka are the best sellers of this decade, from 2010 and up.

Shaft is a great studio, but they aren't the best. They have good visuals, and cinematography, but not much animation compared to other studios. Personally, I think Gainax and Bones are better purely animation wise.

Honestly, I think Shaft is easily the best studio out there along with KyoAni and Ghibli. Many people might complain Madhouse, Bones or etc. are the best studios but I think non of those studios have any sort of creativity when it comes to actual animation. However they do trying their best to present something standard. To accomplish that, all they have to do is waste budget and time on their projects. They don't make something unique

But I think it's because there's almost no space for creativity when it comes to action scenes in anime.
You see...
To create a hot fight scene in an action anime, you don't need to get much inspiration from the real world. While in a Slice of Life anime, you do.

You might say there's also ComixWave with good Slice of Life animation but in my opinion ComixWave is very bad at character design. Almost every character in their each anime look the same. And the animation as a whole doesn't seem very unique and creative. They're also just trying their best to present something standard.

But KyoAni, Ghibli and Shaft are different.
Each one has their own unique style which you can't find anywhere else.

KyoAni has it's super realistic animation very close to real life with smooth character movements,
Ghibli animation is just in another dimension with not a single repetitive frame,
And Shaft is doing impossible with making boring lines interesting with it's visuals

I always get obsessed with KyoAni animation, doesn't matter if the story is boring.
And I don't remember ever getting bored while listening to dialogues in an anime made by Shaft.

Maybe it's just because I prefer a good realistic Slice of Life scene over an action scene, but I find KyoAni and Shaft style very unique and I don't think there's anything similar to these two

To me they come off as a one trick pony. You either like their style or you loathe it. Outside of Monogatari i can't think of anything they did that was that great.
