The Anime News Network (ANN) article on Yasuke by LeSean Thomas reportedly had its comment section self locked, likely due to heated discussions sparked by criticisms of Thomas's past and the show’s reception. Thomas, who previously faced backlash for his Cannon Busters Kickstarter campaign, drew scrutiny for how Yasuke deviated from expectations. The inclusion of mecha elements and supernatural themes in what many thought would be a grounded historical anime upset audiences expecting a more faithful adaptation of the story of Oda nobunga's Black samurai. This controversy escalated due to the accusations on the mismanagement during the Cannon Busters campaign where promises to backers went largely unfulfilled, and the "why not" attitude basis for the creative choices by Lesean for his shows whether it be Yasuke or not had further alienated the people there. the Comment sections had devolved into heated arguments with defenders of Thomas clashing with critics, some of whom suspected as "suspicious shills," leading to insults and moderation measures like self locking the section (requires moderator's approval to post) and shadow deleting comments en masse that don't fit the moderators' discretion on what's ''appropriate'' (censorship?) for a comment. |

Ok..My question is; did he ever explicitly state Yasuke was going to be more grounded? If not, then unless he intentionally mislead people without directly saying anything, that's on them for expecting it to be a certain way. |

I liked Yasuke anime. It's not one of the best shows I've ever seen, but it was fine as a miniseries. At first, I also wanted to see something more grounded, so seeing mecha stuff and all was well, kind of shocking at first. But once I got used to them and accepted the fact that this anime wouldn't be historically accurate, I can't say I didn't have fun while watching it. It was a nice, interesting take on mixing actual historical characters, events and aesthetics with mecha elements, futuristic body modifications or supernatural stuff. I'm pretty picky when it comes to such things (mixing two elements that at a first glance don't seem to have much in common), but Yasuke anime felt well-done, or at least proper if someone wants to be overly critical, and those elements also felt natural (for this particular anime's story, that is). About the article and drama: I don't care, to be honest. It's also the first time I've ever heard about Cannon Busters. Edit: huh, that first paragraph was too long, so I divided it into two, lol. |

Cannon Busters is okay, I guess. Nothing special. Same with Yasuke, the whole problem is when the producers somehow pretend Yasuke was anything more than an apocryphal personality, like we see with the new Assassins' Creed game that's coming soon. Don't recall such stuff about Yasuke. |

I can sort of understand some disappointment in a series being less grounded, but at the same time my reaction would be more like “oh, this is not what I thought it was going to be” versus whatever the hell this is. To be clear, accuracy of the historical sense is different than a series being grounded. Grounded series tend to abide by more real-world rules, so you come in knowing or assuming certain aspects of the world would be similar to our own. A bad example that I often think of, but we can assume that in any slice of life anime that taxes exist despite never explicitly being told that they exist. Many slice of life series takes place in the real world, and any deviating supernatural elements like ghosts are going to be outright stated or alluded to; anything unsaid are things we can assume do or do not exist. It is for this similar reason why Kaguya is such a weird addition to Naruto canon; no one expects aliens in a fantasy ninja world. For a better example, a series that focus on martial arts, we assume that no character is going to perform a shoryuken. I think being angry about to the extent of arguing about it online is weird purist shit, honestly. |

@Dante012 the show came out in 2021 and there are various other media depictions of the character from before then. He was also in Team Ninja's 2017 action game Nioh, so he's been in pretty popular media even outside of japan for a few years now. He genuinely is an interesting historical figure and is somewhat well known in japan |

cannon busters was alright, but had a lot of shortcomings, kind of felt like a fan project, with some really cool elements and some interesting ideas, but with a half baked execution regarding the production and writing, also had a bad case of no proper ending. haven't seen yasuke as it didn't look that great to me and haven't heard great things, but i'm for this guy if he's trying to do something fresh in the world of anime, but obviousely not delivering on kickstarter promises is shitty. |

@Dante012 he is popular though? I mean he's notable enough to have had children's books written about him, video games developed about him, TV shows produced about him, appearances in media not specifically about him that were set during the Sengoku period, and to have inspired a ton of dark skinned samurai characters. While his time as a samurai was short, it did leave an impression on history due to his unique circumstances. While you may not care about him personally, he is pretty well known and an interesting part of the history of Japan so to write off his impact on pop culture is disingenuous. It's not really "pushing him to be popular" when you can easily look up the influence he has had on Japanese pop culture |

Who would've cared much about that lousy anime though. It looks so tasteless, cheap and retarded that hardly anyone is interested.
Those negative comments would at least give it some more popularity.
Btw, is it that director who has unhealthy focus on representing a particular race?

@Nemo_Niemand How is a black guy writing stories about black characters an "unhealthy focus"? You wouldn't call Japanese anime "unhealthily obsessed" with representing Asians, or shows made by white people "unhealthily obsessed" with representing white people. |

@LSSJ_Gaming While his time as a samurai was short I don't have a horse in this race, but the claims about him being a samurai are generally Western-driven. The term "samurai" is often used as an umbrella term in the West to group together all kinds of bushi, which leads to confusion. As such, the average Japanese person generally rejects this notion, as it originates from the West. There’s no evidence that he was a 旗本 (hatamoto), 御家人 (gokenin), 足軽 (ashigaru), or 地侍 (jizamurai), or that he ever learned bushido (武士道) principles such as bu-gei (武芸) or practiced basic arts like kyujutsu (弓術) or kenjutsu (剣術). What we have are fragmentary references saying he was made to serve Nobunaga as a retainer whilst being referenced to having joined battles with oda's forces as well Since saburau (侍う) means “to serve,” it was presumed that he must have been a samurai cuz of such, because that’s where the term “samurai” comes from aka saburaru=serve. However, the way the term “samurai” tend to be broadenly used in the west is not the same as it is in Japan—just look at how the term anime is used differently for example but people appropriated the term either way. So, Yasuke was either a retainer or a samurai, depending on which side across the pond you look at it from. That said, this whole debate is disingenuous and agenda-driven as heck, due to the West's culture war |

@phantom346 I'm not sure why either, but one thing is clear: ANN came down hard on anyone who was overtly critical in the comment sections of that article, which seems very suspicious. They almost never act like this, yet they did when Yasuke was involved, particularly given how controversial the character has become nowadays due to Ubisoft lots of users reported that their accounts got soft locked as well now and any comments they make gets pended till it gets approved by moderators to be posted. You can always count on places where Yasuke is the subject to go south very fast nowaday cuz people can't accept being called out whether through criticism/facts. |

look to who owns ANN and their connections with the Yasuke anime and the director... what was his name again? ook there it is in the OP LeSean Thomas. look into Mr. Thomas' previous work(s) and their connections with whom owns ANN. check with his staff members present and former. whom have they worked for or with? who has given cash/assistance/credence/weight/gravitas to Mr. Thomas' present and previous works? ya gotta think and look behind the scenes folks. people get butthurt about anything. but smart people don't just follow the herd and pop off with kneejerk reactions. best as i know, Ubisoft doesn't have a horse in ANY Japanese media... other than selling their products to consumers there. i don't even think Ubi has any of their satellite studios in-country... if i'm wrong do mention it. Ubi has pulled almost entirely and utterly from EUROPEAN historical figures. i include the Americas and Carribean with the European historical influence due to the predominant populations. Altair being of Arabic ancestry and living in the regions near Jerusalem etc. and Adewale of course being a former slave from Africa and AC Origins being set in Egypt and Aveline de Grandpré the female creole (half French half African) main character in AC3: Liberation and AC Chronicles China and India being set in those two countries with a female Chinese Assassin as the MC in China and a male Indian MC there. so AC Shadows being the first AAA, MAINSTREAM TITLE, big draw game for Ubi's AC Franchise being set IN JAPAN (an Asian country) where myself and TONS of AC fans wanted a 'ninja/samurai Assassin' in Japan... and instead of Ghosts of Tsushima being set in a smaller area and littler known era of Japanese history... THE MONGOL INVASIONS! not alot of world-wide folks know a ton of that history... and good for Sucker Punch and Nixxes Software for working in that kind of idea... this is Ubi's first step into THAT part of the world and trying to 'fold it into' their overall franchise. now, as to Shadows' content? ya gotta wait till Valentine's Day 2025... of course press and speculations and footage and bla bla bla will and has come out. i haven't read or watched or checked into it much at all... i'll wait till somebody i like on YT starts streaming Walkthroughs or Let's Play recordings and find out BLIND! what is going on... but! y'all do know... if Ubi takes AN ACTUAL HISTORIC FIGURE FROM THE RECORD... and makes him/her etc. THE MAIN CHARACTER... y'all do know that IS THE FIRST TIME UBI HAS DONE THAT? right? every real historic person in AC franchise history, has been an NPC. everybody. every other Main Character has been conglomerations of legends or entirely fictional creations of Ubi's writers etc. i don't think Ubi is going to pull somebody (even a whiff of a legend of a rumor of a fairy tale) who MIGHT have existed... and make that person the Main Character of Shadows. because Ubi hasn't done that before... and probably KNOWS 100% that making a historic figure into a fictional Main Character is a tricky thing! especially since Ubisoft IS NOT JAPANESE! the Japanese will handle and appreciate ONE OF THEIR OWN working with the likes of Oda Nobunaga and suchforth... even gender swapping him to a girl as Oda Nobuna in 'The Ambition of Oda Nobuna' as well as gender swapping ALL THE OTHER major historical men in that period to girls! but if Ubi did something 'bad' with one of Japan's historic figures?? that's not a good business idea. so whomever this Yasuke guy is... or whatever his story is... i don't know crap about the guy or anything... if he's a real guy? i'm betting Ubisoft is making the guy an NPC. that's their history. |

I don't like seeing Americans move into Japan then exploit the county's poor economic state producing animation that has more of a Western audience in mind over the likely poorly understood Japanese one. Japan already produces too much anime but using them as a replacement for the fact the West doesn't have enough 2D animators I find questionable. I haven't seen Yosuke but looks okay but mediocre except for Flying Lotus doing the soundtrack. I'd rather just see better treatment of animators in Japan and the US and for them to just make their own stuff. It's already bad enough the US exports animation to like Thailand and Japan is having to export more too in part due to this kind of Western takeover of their industry but also due to foolish studio antics of producing way more anime than the market in Japan and globally can handle and put more stress on the animators. Cross cultural collaboration can be nice but it just feels one sided with this guy from what I can gather about him at the moment, but I don't know enough to be sure how much he actually understands and cares about Japanese people and culture and I don't give a damn about petty edrama. |

I have nothing against Yasuke but its pretty obvious he's being used and pushed in the West as a overly glorified historical/popular legend in Japan when he was just a minor historical figure in Japan, he wasn't even a samurai (it was better explained above why). The main reason for the current controversy is that people in English-speaking countries are interpreting materials in their own way or using mistranslated information to assert as fact the speculation that Yasuke is a samurai. Even the Japanese Wikipedia -which it's the only trustworthy source and not internet users opinions- doesn't call him a samurai. I found ironic those negative comment on ANN are from tourists who wanted the Yasuke Anime to be proper anti-Japanese propaganda when Japan and sane people would never to allow it. Yasuke being a samurai is just an interpretation, NOT a historical fact. Anime is allowed to make their own interpretation of historical people AS LONG don't try to pass as facts, that's why fantasy elements were added which I'm glad the Yasuke Anime did. It's annoying some people in the West are using him only because of his skin color and trying to use Japanese culture by force acting they care about Japan when it's cleary they are just insulting the country. If Yasuke wasn't black, they will never care about Yasuke in the first place and much less trying to openly use culture appropiation to pass him as samurai. They don't care about Yasuke as a person, they don't care about historical facts and obviously they don't care about Japanese culture. They just want to push a political agenda. The Anime is just an interpretation of the character since it contains a lot of fantasy and supernatural elements while Assassin's Creed Shadows did the opposite, an openly racist game towards Japanese people and has a lot of revisionism and historical inaccuracy at the same time. |

@KittenCuddler Mods are, in fact, allowed to delete comments if they break the rules. However, the way it happened with shadow-deleting comments was such a bummer WTF because shadow deletion relies on the mods' discretion or judgment rather than being strictly based on the ruleset. Additionally, those who had their comments shadow-deleted ended up with their accounts soft-locked, even if they were long-time members. it wasn't just some tourists with freshly created accounts hence why it become controversial for ANN when it happened. no asumptions needed @KiliianSleipnir oh, didn't know about his connections to the ANN staff and onwer!!!!!! my thanks for hightlighting that @Nurguburu your post was fun to read and had lots of substance to it, thx |

@kutuya people who make up things and blow things out of proportions for people to be mad about that they actually don't care about but know will make them likes/clicks/money. Seriously assassins' creed 2 you fought the pope using magic alien destiny staff. if you care about "historical accuracy" for AC now that bus left after AC1. @KiliianSleipnir i mean fate/go turned half the historical figures into anime girls and i don't see as much of a outrage as this nonsense. Seriously who gives a fuck? i sure don't most Japanese manga and anime producers that mess with history in there mnaga/books/anime/games do not. heck honkai impact turned newton into a anime girl. so clearly china doesn't give a fuck either. |

People aren't mad because it's "historically inaccurate", you're the one latching onto that, they're upset about the irreverence towards Japanese history and culture. None of the other examples you bring up are at all similar, Fate/Grand Order made Da Vinci a girl because they thought it would be cool, not to boost their ESG score. |

@kutuya they likely used yasuke as the same reason Fate/go did things again you are over thinking things don't follow youtuber grifters.there are plenty of people that genuinely think yasuke is cool. next thing your going to say is that Nioh put the obsidian samurai in for "ESG score." |
