What are some of the worst subs you've ever encountered?

Last weekend, I binge-watched Tamako Market because I've been wanting to watch Tamako Love Story for a while. Naturally, I watched it dubbed because of course I'd prefer the superior option. But then I came to find out that the movie didn't have any dub release so I went "eh fine" and decided to watch the sub. An acquaintance of mine chimed up to hand over her flash drive because she has a copy she recently downloaded from KA. Eh, okay, what could go wrong, says I. Then I watched one of the worst subtitle job you would expect from some random fansub and not from one of the largest and most well-known illegal streaming sites.

Exhibit A: The most memorable one. The others were facepalm-worthy ones. This was the hilarious one that truly ruined immersion for me as I laughed my ass off a scene that's meant to be anything but.

Can't say I'm really pissed, though I did spend the better part of the movie trying to figure out how to dub it rather than appreciating it.

Hmm. So far i've only ran into pretty solid translations. Nothing that i would really call bad. There were some times when the translation could have been understood in totally other ways ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) but that's more of a fun factor rather than a bad one

There was once I watched an OVA with bad subs. It was Date A Live encore OVA, where the translator note literally stated he happened to be with a call girl that roughly knew Japanese. The sentence structure was broken as heck. The "He" and "She" was used interchangeably, sometimes the same character could be referred to in right the next sentence as another gender. I still understood it perfectly though, the words were still more or less a direct translation but I could correct the sub's sentence structure in my head.
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

This local fansub, that I think has the best quality (compared to others) and rarely miss, but once they miss, it's very fatal.

Like, how they translated Momo's explanation about inertia in Bakugou's move to some humidity crap that didn't make sense at all and completely random and out of context and I just want to face palm so hard.

Or in SnK S1, they mixed up the subject and make it seems like it's Armin who was scared and couldn't think anymore while it's clearly the chief/captain that is scared shitless he couldn't think rationally.

Or this Koe no Katachi one. I watched with local subs and it's the worst sub I encountered so far. They don't translate the japanese texts like the one on the calendar and envelopes and phones (thankfully I can read them just fine) and their translation is awkward and inaccurate I was so mad.

I mean, a lot of fellow anime fans who doesn't understand english relied on this local fansub and they kind of ruined it...

Well, translating stuff is not an easy feat and I thank you for them doing it at all. And for free. While I believe I can do better I don't have time nor I care enough so I still greatly appreciate their hard work.

I'm not going to mention subs that are so bad that they seem to come from non-english speakers, as those are easy targets. The only professional subs in recent memory that were pretty bad were the crunchyroll subs for gabriel dropout. They added a ton of expressions and jokes to the subs that I didn't think were very funny and also sometimes resulted in wrong translations. I haven't seen all of it yet but a professional translator should be able do better than that.

The fansub of Omoide Poroporo I watched a couple months ago was really bad. In addition to them being timed weirdly, there were a handful of misspellings, and stuff was just translated very awkwardly.
The Girls und Panzer subs I found were less than ideal too. For whatever reason, whoever subbed it decided to throw in random German at times, and hearing Japanese audio, while reading mostly English sentences with occasional German thrown in was really obnoxious. I speak a little bit of German too, and I'm relatively sure some of the German terms the subber threw in were used incorrectly.

Whoever subbed the version of OPM I watched did a shite job at it, considering there were multiple "&@18r;83" jumbled type things per episode and they would noticeably fall out of sync from time to time. I don't know who did it, though, but that'd definitely be the one I consider the worst I've seen.

Sadly i cant remember the show and episode it was, but i once dragged myself through an episode where the subs were red and green. one word would have green letters with red outlining and the next would have red letters and green outlining. they would alternate with each word for the entire episode

My main language is spanish but I mostly use english subtitles, the reason for that is becuase I've seen it happen a few times that the spanish subtitles are a translation of the english one, and it shows, a lot, you can really tell they come from english and not the original.

The most atrocious one I found was ''casualties'' translated as ''casualidades'' which means something like ''coincidence'', it was Zetsuen no Tempest sub, and they kept repeating it.

When characters talk too fast and the translators can't keep up. Etc. it is when you don't know what's going on!

Anyways, if I download anime (which I rarely do), it's either raw or soft subs which I never end up using in the end.

tf edgy show is that,

OT: cyborg 009, 50 eps of out of synced subs, no subs sometimes, and wall of dialouge being shortened to 1-2 lines
It's good that Slop leveling won the CR awards with such a power gap, Gaijin Weebs don't deserve good anime.
Not after what they did to frieren, kusuriya, and many others

If this isn't anime specific then

Any Kamen Rider/Super Sentai series subbed by Tv-Nihon, the only good thing I could say for them is that the design for the specific series are spot on good. Otherwise, I haven't seen any horrible ANIME subs.

Especially if it's some horribly misguided localization like in fucking Sakura Quest when they decided to persistently translate 'Tanuki' as 'Monkey'. Not even raccoon or anything. Monkey.

Whoever made that decision must be a braindead retard and I want to punch him. Definitely the worst example of misguided translation/localization in a professional sub that I can think of.

Sure, when it comes to troll subs or subs from non-english groups trying to make english subs (legendary HK subs for example, or the turkish based subs I watched for Slam Dunk for example) there are worse cases. But this level of shit-translation is simply unacceptable from a professional company that expects you to pay for their service.
I probably regret this post by now.

The subs of Saint Seiya I watched for the Poseidon saga where pretty "questionable" to say the least. There's also the subs of both Fist of the North Star and Slam dunk that Crunchyrol had back in like circa 2013 where also ass. The dialogue wasn't really the problem, it was the timing man, those subs where a good two-three seconds off.

I think that was your fault for watching bad subs. You could've just gone to the Tamako Love Story page and checked which sub group was good and then downloaded it yourself.

OT - never watched bad subs because I do some research into sub groups before downloading an anime.
There are tiny mistakes here and there(which always happens), nothing to break your experience.

Sub > Dub 99% of the time. But it's subjective. You wanna watch dub, I'm not gonna stop you. Just don't complain about it afterwards.

I've never actually stepped foot inside KA ever since they've been having problems months ago that eventually warranted that shitty "Are You Human" pop-up. As I said, a female friend of mine. She pulled a prank because she's an ardent sub watcher and she's been butting heads with me on the topic repeatedly and me turning down her offer for her copy of Tamako Market because I wanted it in dub triggered it. When it came to the movie, there was no official dub and she has a copy already there on hand. Why bother to download again? Not like I was expecting the prank. I would have gone to 9anime, downloaded it in 720p, not the light 480p I used too because it's a movie. A Yamada movie at that. (Why 480p you may ask? Inconsistent internet, and most anime are fine in 480p and doesn't deserve to be watched in any higher res, unless I ended up liking them enough to buy the blue-ray)

Besides, I had fun watching the horrible subtitles. Jeremy-Irons-in-the-Dungeon-and-Dragons-film fun. And I get to pay her back by watching Love Story's fan dub.

I've accepted that dubs are a hit or miss affair. I did not remember complaining about dubs, unless it is series-specific, in which case the only bad thing I've ever truly said is that I did not like Shinsekai Yori's dub.
