I don’t mean to keep ragging on the obvious, but this episode's use of the 10 minute downtime Luffy suffers after gear 4 was literally what I was concerned it would become. As Luffy charges up, a weaker party member gets time to shine, they barely hold off the enemy, and Luffy shaves in saving Rebecca and Viola or Nami while shouting: “don’t hurt my friend!” The start and end of a fight may be predictable but we don’t need every step of the way to be so cookie cutter. This doesn’t mean using a formula like this is bad, it is obviously effective, and this time showed off Nami’s strength and love of Sanji. The flashback of him being a pervert or saving Usopp in Water 7 or saving the gang from Doflamingo was sweet. He has put himself on the line for them without hesitation. As Zoro said in that amazing filler conversation in Alabasta “Everyone should do what they can with their lives on the line and then say to the next guy: ‘I did what I could. Now it’s your turn. If you don’t finish it, I’ll kick your ass!’”
As for the Vinsmokes, as much as I praised them for not crossing the line of unbelievability while being very silly and extreme, I preferred when their values and past were implicit. Having Niji, who looks like he would lose to Sanji, beat him while he can’t defend himself, and having Ichiji talk about the proper hierarchy of boys who need a hostage to keep him down, after having Niji beat defenseless woman, and before flashing back to show us beating those Sanji cares for is a pattern among other mistreatments, it’s simply a little overbearing. I understand that the Vinsmokes are prideful, sadistic, and cold, I understood that very quickly, and this episode just reiterated that sentiment. Was what they’ve done not enough? I extrapolated they’ve always been like this from their first appearances, and because of that, it made it feel as if there was an attempt to manipulate my emotions. It didn’t feel sincere, it felt like a montage of really bad guys doing bad things to make sure I feel super super super bad about these woman beating, family betraying, animal abusing scum. I didn’t need that and it was so extreme it only hurt my impression of them, taking them from believable to overly simplistic due to the amount of this behavior I’ve been shown in quick succession.
Now, I’m being too critical, I did like this episode. To start with, it seems Sanji and his siblings are superhumans modified by the Vegapunk bloodline science. And when it started, we saw the Endeavour-like Judge announce that these kids were birthed for a reason. To train and to become leaders of Germa 66. That’s why they exist, it’s even more conditional than we could have glimpsed from Sanji’s first on-screen meeting with Judge. They were modified for this! Further, Sanji, like the siblings, chanted to this future Judge had in mind. I think Sanji was willing to train, he wanted to do what his father wanted as I imagine most boys would in his shoes. This makes the slow and constant failure of Sanji all the more sad as he cries, abandoned by his father and left to die, apologizing that he was born weak. Brutal stuff, it was a nice look into the transformation Sanji had, and if Sanji was conflicted on his feelings for his father, the fact that he probably aspired to be the man Judge wanted and therefore wanted his acceptance feels all the more meaningful. It gets me excited to see the difficult emotions he’ll have to confront.
The Sanji beating scene and the flashbacks made something else clear. Ichiji has continuously been another pompous asshole, just like Niji and Yonji, and like them, he has a different flavour of it. A more reserved and confident demeaning scumbag, unlike the bullying Niji, or the antagonistic punk Yonji. The flashbacks never gave me an impression of another side of him. However, it very much did for Reiju. Around the 16 minute mark when Sanji lost the race and Judge looked at him with cold eyes and left him behind, Reiju was the only one who paused for a minute to look back at him. Later, we see Reiju look concerned for Sanji but laugh alongside her brothers, imitating them. This was quite awesome visual storytelling, I had a suspicion that Reiju was actually considerate and cared for others, but ultimately agreed with her father's views. This made it clear that at a young age she was in conflict and had a heart but never put it first. Later when she stated what was already shown, which felt slightly unnecessary, she put it explicitly and said that she laughs so that she isn’t bullied as well. A sentiment we can presume she still holds to some degree, like she agrees and lives up to her family’s decisions and expectations because she never wanted to be treated like Sanji was.
Lastly, we saw a photo of Sanji’s mother and were told that feeding rats was living up to the legacy of the deceased. This goes to suggest that Sanji took more after his mother than his father. Perhaps Reiju also got some of their mothers kindness but the other boys are 100% Judge. Further, we don’t know what the death of the mother did to Judge and the children, I wonder if that played a role in how they’ve become. Sanji was in the photo with his mom and he looked old enough to remember her after all. |
