Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack has some really well done fight sequences, though the film isn't very good when you take that away

I know this is going to be a predictable answer but one of my favorite anime fights of all time will always be Chun Li vs. Vega in the English Dub of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. This was a fight that was incredibly evenly matched with both fighters literally beaten, bruised, and bloody by the end of it. The reason why I suggested the English Dub over the Subtitled version is that in the English Dubbing they use the song Ultra by KMFDM as the background song as the fight is taking place. That is just an awesome song to have playing in the background while an awesome fight is taking place.

Vega also has a great quote as he is taunting and cutting up chun li with his claw.

"My hobby is to slowly peel the skin off the rabbits I catch, especially cute little bunnies like you and my friend here is rather thirsty for blood."

inb4 the final Stranger fight&some Madoka/Fate fights

I think Naruto fights are generally underestimated.
Gintama° has a cool one but I dont think its the best animated fight ever, it gains much from the context.

Oshii is probably the only director that loves dogs. He thinks he's a dog himself.

That's right, its slime! It will dissolve your clothing slowly before my eyes!

Besides the obligatory Fate, and Sword of the Stranger answers. I gotta say Cowboy Bebop:The Movie, the fights between Spike and Vincent were incredible. Also I have to mention One Punch Man for the Saitama vs Boros fight, that was so lit and the fact the OP played in the middle of it made it even more hype.

hunter x hunter 2011 has some insane fighting in it
tetsuwan birdy, tetsuwan birdy decode and especially decode 02. the final fight is amazing
tekkonkinkreet
kemonozume
etc

point being there are a lot of well animated, well directed fights in anime. it's not just about a couple of flashing lights like some people on here might think. yeah, flashing lights are cool, but they're just one aspect.

The anime that come to my mind when you say "great fights", in rough descending order:

• Sword of the Stranger
• Mob Psycho 100
• One Punch Man
• Heartcatch Precure!
• Hunter x Hunter (2011)
• Naruto/Shippuuden

Notably, I haven't seen any Fate works or Madoka, which tend to get mentioned a lot in topics like this.

Edit: Also, although I list them in the order I do, my current favorite fight in the medium definitely comes from Heartcatch Precure!, specifically the final confrontation with Dune. Others favorites include the final Sword of the Stranger fight, Gon vs Hisoka, and Naruto vs Pain.

The Fate fights are mediocre as hell, can't believe people are head over heels for them just because the studio decides to throw every damn digital effects that they have on the screen all at the same time. None of them are interesting or have great choreography either (something which even Naroodoe is better at).

As for my pick, I would say the EoE/Rebuild ones for doing a great job of capturing the intensity of the battles.

Kara no Kyoukai was no slouch in that department. Neither were the action scenes in Jin Rou. I was also impressed with the short fight sequence in Run, Melos, artwork especially.

Obligatory Katanagatari response. I mean, the battle against Sabi Hakuhei has one of the best sakugas I have ever watched in my miserable life.

The fights of Araragi vs the vampire hunters in Kizumonogatari II were also spectacular. Shaft can do marvelous battles when they want.

Also, even if it's not really an action anime, the fight of Taiga against the president of the student council in Toradora looked really good. I'm surprised they animated that scene that well for a romcom.

I would have used to say Sword of the Stranger and Cowboy Bebop but now I'll have to go with Mob Psycho 100. The animation in that show blew me away. Even better than OPM fights. The industry really went all-out on these two shows.

Now there are other fights where I find the choreography more impressive or love the use of tactics and brains, but simply talking about animation quality there isn't much that can be mentioned alongside those shows I mentioned without falling short.
I probably regret this post by now.

yes this, it's such a shame they didn't have enough people to work on the animation for season 2. :(

Japan has some messed up economics for the anime industry.

I don't think Fate fights are that good either, the visual effects are gorgeous definitely, but the fights themselves aren't that good.

But without including movies and OVAs, best fights I've seen are from Naruto, Hunter x Hunter and maybe even Gintama

Obviously there's your Fate series fights - Zero and UBW were always going to be top-notch, animated by ufotable, but as someone above said the Prisma Ilya series were also surprisingly good. I especially remember the first season of 2wei tiding me over nicely while I waited for UBW to come out.

As far as the actual fights themselves, they really made the first one of each series (Saber and Lancer for Zero, and Lancer and Archer for UBW) stand out, as they should do for our first look at the action in a, you know, action series. I actually prefer UBW as far as animation goes, just because they better portray the superhuman speed and power that the Servants are supposed to have.

Someone mentioned Katanagatari, and I agree... sort of. The fight with Sabi Hakuhei, is, okay, really well done. But a lot of the other fights are less focused on action and more focused on the conversation being had at the same time. That's not to say the action isn't good - it is - but it's not the focus, and that does show through at times. (It's a Nisio Isin thing - the Monogatari series has the same style.)

The last one I'll mention is Homura vs. Mami in Madoka Rebellion. It's the Matrix and Equilibrium, done by magical girls inside a timestop in a Gothic cityscape to a Yuki Kajiura soundtrack. We'd been waiting for the entire series for these two to cut loose, and holy crap did this movie deliver. One of my favourites.

My answers will be very expected but hey it's true.

Fate series, of course (F/Z and UBW)

One Punch man and MP100, and Gintama's definitely in there too, latest arc sparked some criticism but overall fight scenes are very well animated in Gintama.

Samurai Champloo was great as well. Can I also give a special shoutout to the pool cue fight scene in Death Parade? That was great lol

Naruto, Naruto: Shippuuden, Mob Psycho 100, and, interestingly enough, Yumekui Merry. With Naruto, it seems that only the important fights are fluidly-animated, but with Yumekui Merry, so far, every fight seems to be fluidly-animated.

I tried to convince a friend that is not at all into Anime to watch Girls und Panzer series just to build a rapport with the world and narrative just so he could watch the movie, just so he could watch that one fight scene. He won't get there, but if he did I know he would think it was all worth it.

Another honorable mention is episode 6 in no game no life. -unconventional but simply epic.
