one of the best short movies i've seen, i loved the meaning behind it and how it conveyed emotions using animation and music instead of using dialogue, quite a gem indeed

Well that was fucking great.

Puts literally every series airing this season (hell in most past seasons) to shame, and not a word was spoken.

Unique Animation, great Atmosphere and a touching Story in around 12 minutes. Totally worth the watch.

This show is a must watch!

It's only asking a 12 minute of your life, instead of a 24 minute per episode of your ecchi show.

Gosh, well that was depressing. I'm glad that this short got the rating it deserves.

Those who might not have thought this was not special might want to translate this anime into their life in the future. Or think about their grandparents.

I just don't see what is great about this movie.

I have to agree with you. It's not like it's the first ever show or short film to touch on subjects like reminiscing one's life, memories and loss. I liked the concept of the cubes; The ones that were submerged representing the past, his journey underwater like a scene of foggy memories and then still having to build to keep living because that's life, you can't just give up. Well you can but that's another story. So I got it, no problem there but I'm also not sure why people thought it was exceptional. Do we not have much to compare it to? I just didn't feel it despite the lovely orchestral soundtrack and sad themes which are normally up my ally. Might be one of those things that it depends how you feel at the time. If it happens to hit a nerve I can see why people love this. Also I was kind of expecting a twist which didn't happen. When it finished I thought "ok, fair enough, I like what it represented and I wonder why I didn't like this more". Just my opinion :3

Sometimes I wonder when was the time I became such a softie when it comes to sad love stories. I guess that it was when I just gave up on it kek.

I have ta admit that the music really helps build up the feels since I guess that I wouldn't have teared up without it (especially that intensifying part when the past couple was about ta toast).

The floodwaters signify the fact that ya can't live in the past and if you try to, it will never feel the same way like it used to.

That part when he toasted with no one was heartbreaking af ;-: His daughter should go visit him...

What a unique artistic movie, it was a canvas of greatness. I understand the Old man's staying in that flooded house, he doesn't want to leave those memories he shared with his family especially his wife. I guess he will die with that as I see, because there is no one who seems living in that town anymore. Great silent movie with not your typical Japanese anime and award inspirational, it was almost like a moving portrait.

8/10.

When the old guy started fishing my first thought was: That's a nice ice shanty you got there.

But then it got deep. (pun intended)

It was about our lives being built on our past.

5/10 (average) Nice presentation. Not great or bad.

I must have watched this 5 or 6 times by now, and each time I find myself loving and appreciating it more. It really makes the most of its short runtime and the medium it operates in, with wonderful audiovisual storytelling used to convey ideas and messages that are universal. Great film; one of my favourites.

Heard about this short forever and just never got around, glad it was on netflix to just click on turning my binge.

It gives me the same feelings Up did which is a common connection even though Up came out the year after this, funny that. In all honesty I would've thought this was a European art house short. It's refreshing to see people go outside their relegated art style.

I could gush about the art design and the shaded medium of pastel used. The quaint character design, along with the simplicity in shapes and details. The idea and style tied into the story was so good. It didn't need to go into much other then a few scenes to convey this old mans entire life. Tear jerker to say the least.

I didn't cry or anything, but considering it was 12 minutes I think this short was near-perfect. Beautiful, touching and simple. Can't see anything wrong with it.

I really liked the imagery of who/where we are right now being the accumulation of all our past memories and experiences; as if they've all built us to this point (all the lower rooms), and how the past is never really forgotten (they're always there to explore). Sometimes it may seem invisible (below the surface) but we rest/rely on it all the same.

I cannot believe that it has taken me so long to finally watch this magnificent work. So simple, so unpretentious and yet so incredibly poignant and powerful. There's so much going on while nothing is being said out loud. It takes a true artist to pull that off. No wonder this won an Oscar.

Digging through all those memories, all the love, happiness, sadness and pain, I thought nostalgia would crush the old man. But no, he pulled through and decided to honour and cherish all those moments of his life and bring the memories into his current existence.

Watching this in the middle of an existential crisis about time passing maybe wasn't the best idea... But I loved this little movie. It touched me right in the feels.
First of all, I love the art style, it reminds me of those weird yet charming and poetic cartoons I used to watch when I was younger. The music is also beautiful in its very simple way.
And the story... An old man simply remembering his life, as he is now all alone, in his big yet so small house...
It is done in such a poetic and touching manner. I don't care if it is nothing truly amazing, I think it really deserves a 9. It is beautiful and perfect in its own way. I'm sure I'll rewatch it quite often, anytime I need a little poetic story as I love them.
But I just have a little question, I noticed the title directly translates in french, why is that so ? It even did in the actual movie but I looked up the name of the creator, he isn't french, is he ?
