| 1. Why do you like moe? - When I think of moe, I think hyper cute. An exaggeration of something that already invokes powerful emotions of warmth and happiness. This is a win win situation, I get to smile and be happy and it's all multiplied several times over. 2. What did you use to think about moe before becoming a fan? - Not sure I even knew what it was until I actually sat down and gave K-On a go. I guess I'd say that I used to think it was just dumb shows about nothing aimed at little girls. 3. What's the best moe anime? - Clannad might be too obvious, I love it because it's visually appealing and substantial. If we're talking CGDCT, the Aria series has my vote if that really counts. 4. What is your favorite female moe character overall? - Nagisa Furukawa from Clannad. Precious beyond words. 5. In terms of aesthetics, which artists or character designers from anime, manga or visual novels do moe the best? - KyoAni is the master artisan of le moe. Hard to really pinpoint any specific people beyond that, as much as I like them they are dime a dozen and I don't keep track. 6. What is your favorite male moe character? (That is not Kaiji, of course). - Can Makoto Tachibana from Free! pleeeease count? He's got me wanting to put a ring on that and I don't even swing that way. 7. What's the biggest misconception regarding moe in your experience? - That it defines the contents of an anime. Anything with moe is often regarded as otaku pandering, style over substance, lowest common denominator, etc. It's an art style and there's no one size fits all usage for it. |

Chihaya from Chihayafuru, Sakura from Nozaki-kun, Chitanda from Hyouka are the holy trinity of moeblobs. Nico from Love Live is the best example of gap-moe, aka the disconnect between the character's outward appeareance and their actual personality. 5. In terms of aesthetics, which artists or character designers from anime, manga or visual novels do moe the best? The Love Live designs are the best ones, and Japan agrees with me, so suck it :) 6. What is your favorite male moe character? Hikki from Oregairu, he's me from a couple years ago, except he's even more prideful, and seeing him fail is adorable 7. What's the biggest misconception regarding moe in your experience? Moe =/= cute. Moe is the superficial appeal of a character, including his basic character traits and gimmicks. More generally, Moe is the feeling of immediate attraction and fascination towards a fictional character which makes the viewer do stupid shit like buying figures, collecting fanart, writing bad fanfiction and screaming like a little girl whenever said character does anything relevant on-screen. |
