I noticed that female anime characters are usually more wasted than their counterpart. I Believe that well written female characters are rarer :(

Hmm, a lot of shonen male characters are pretty generic, but they'll be beside more generic female characters since the male tends to be the focus, also those annoying school girl shows with cutesy characters all up and down anime list. So in a way yes when it comes to numbers you'll find more serious male characters than female characters but as a whole theres just a lot of really badly written male and female characters so when you do find a good one it'll most likely be a male.

SN I really enjoyed moribito and book of bantorra, had action, good strong female leads with a good backstory. Not sure why these are so hard to come by.

Well, I kind of agree. Male characters tend to be more intelligent, develop more and provide more of everything to the watcher. Many female chars are only there for looks, and some are annoyingly stupid. Not in ALL anime, but in quite a few. That's why all my fav chars are male.

I'm a new-fag but I'm pretty sure this only happens when the show has a main character that is male; shows with main characters that are female have well-written female characters, if the show itself is good obviously.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

This is one of the reasons I've grown to really like magical girl shows. In a battle shounen like Naruto or Bleach, the female characters tend to get relegated to healing/support or damsel in distress, or in DBZ they cease to serve a purpose once they have a child.

Shows like Precure on the other hand let them be the heroes. They get all of the action and character development because they're the stars. And there's almost always an emphasis on the entire team. No one is considered "useless" like Yamcha or Krillin in DBZ. At worst the leader takes the spotlight but the others are on the same level with each other and still very capable themselves.

The target audience can also be a factor, as most shows with a female protagonist that are targeted toward older male audiences tend to be more interested in sexualizing the character than writing her decently, or just write her as a hardcore badass with none of the character traits that make female characters "weak".

in most anime females mostly care about love while main guy is trying to achieve something else.. to find well written female character is difficult mainly because most anime are oriented to male auditory.

Nah, lots of male characters are shittily written. Most harem protagonists are boring as fuck, the semes in BL stuff tend to be borderline rapists and there are always those dudes who are wishy-washy and unable to make any kind of decision.

There are lots of good female characters out there, you just have to look in the right places. BL isn't the place lol. Generally harems have some badly written ones too, but they can also have good ones and it just depends on the author.

Shoujo females are shit but they're meant to be weak and naïve, so whatever.

It's because most shows have male protagonists, so well-written female characters are rare gems indeed. Yet, when you find them, they turn out to be diamonds.

Like, you know, I have recently completed Kara no Kyoukai...

Considering most anime are marketed towards the male demographic it makes sense there are more male leading characters. Also

Lets assume the percentage of well written characters is 50% and the male to female leading character ratio is 80:20.

So out of a 100 characters there will be 40 well written male characters and 10 well written female characters.

Obviously the numbers and percentages aren't accurate. My point is there are more male leading characters but i think the percentage of well written leading characters is even across the two genders.

I don't know what criteria you are using to see if a character is better written than another. It depends on the genre of show you are watching and sometimes, characters are used as a foil so they don't require the amount of characterization or development as the main characters.

if we are talking about fighting shonen and harens that is usually the case
woman in these genres are used as prizes for main characters most of the times and their characterization is greatly lacking

For the most part, female characters are either useless sex dolls or hardcore bad-asses (even then, they're usually sexualized). There is no in-between.

No, I'm not even making an argument, someone here takes things too seriously :-P I'm not verifying anything. I'm just giving OP a recommendation regardless if there's enough female characterization or not. Some people understand words in mysterious ways.

With the anime I watch it's usually the males who are generic. In a lot of harems you'll have a generic male character with a few generic females and a few well-written females. Out of my ten favourite characters only one is male (L).

Nope, in most cases when female characters are badly written, so are the male ones. It's just that male characters have more screentime, but their "quality per screentime" ratio is not any better than the female characters'.

Maybe the male counterparts are also lacking depth. Just women are viewed as a, "prize" does not mean that the males are written any better. Look at sword art online, Kirito is a bad character as are all of his love interests. I don't see how he is better written than any of them.

Indeed, in most cases an author is going to either have good or bad quality consistently. If you look at an average harem, even generic tsundere loli-hime #9283 tends to have more going for her than the male MC. When there are cool/interesting MCs (Arata from Trinity Seven), the girls are usually able to match in wit and execution.

Psycho-Pass came to mind when thinking of an example of brilliant (or pretentious for you know who) character balance. Akane, Kogami, and Makishima are all on equal footing in terms of quality, as each one highlights a contrasting ideology that you can't paint the whole picture without.

Ironically the place where males are thoroughly more valuable then females is reverse harem. Go watch Amnesia (DON'T!) or Diabolik Lovers (NOOO!) and you'll see a true representation of OP's dilemma.

On the other side of the shoujo spectrum, you have characters such as Yona, Shirayuki, and Nike who all have brilliant dynamics with their male counterparts.
