lol out of style?

its something we need more of since there plenty of generic mahou shoujos

I'd like to see those generic mahou shoujo you speak of outside of Pretty Cure...

Yes, and as usual the edgy teens on MAL will flock to it because it contains the magical word "death game".

As for usual reactions in forums you can't do anything about it. For some reason there is a misconception among fans which I don't understand, everytime something comes out with "death battle" tag which actually translates to pointless death tournament, some people take it as it is an indication of show not being generic, when actually you can't get any more predictable than that. If almost everyone is going to die in 12 episode why should I even care about them, it is not like they are going to be developed anyway.

This along with the supposed "breath of fresh air" arguments always annoy me. Everytime we get an overpowered main lead in a show we see some people saying "Finally someone who is not as wimpy as the normal, spineless MCs that populate [genre X]", when really all the recent LN action shows featured at least competent leads.

People need to realize that when everyone breaks a trend, breaking the trend becomes the new trend.
I am not a fan of wimpy protagonists and 10 magical girl shows with 100% pure friendship power would probably annoy me as well, but a bit of variety would be nice.

There are tons of survival themes around, but what sets them apart are what the rules are and how good it's executed.

Wondering what the fuck this "administration is smoking"? Any girl who tries only has a 1 in 100K chance of becoming a magical girl. Out of all the girls who tried, there are only 16. That's....not a large number.

Mai Hime too.

However when people talk about Madoka rip off it is not just about the deconstruction aspect - it is about the abstract art style, aesthetic choices, character designs(ex: Okada Mari's trainwreck Wixosss franchise).

Expecting a "death game light novel" to even try to rip off the deconstruction aspect would be giving them too much credit.

Maybe if they stopped making threads all together about Light Novels here then people wouldn't be circlejerking.

I've read the first volume of that one. I have most of the others but missing one which was out of stock (since they announced an anime I suppose every online shop will replenish those quickly so I'm glad even just for this, I 'm now sure that I'll get my hand on the volume I didn't manage to until now o/ ).
It's okay, and peoples liking to see lots of character dies and "cruelty for the sake of it" should enjoy it but... That's nothing really original nor impressive and the character development at least in the first volume is clearly lacking.

It's entertaining, definitely. And I am looking forward to read the following volumes that will definitely be covered by an adaptation.

SchwingBoner said:
Based on the novel genres, this is the kind of magical girl anime I would enjoy.

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural, Thriller

I do hope that the anime focuses more on the survival game part. I hope it won't turn out like Gakkou Gurashi anime where the focus is more on moe & fanservice instead of zombie apocalypse.

It's definitely focusing on the survival part. There is no ecchi fanservice there btw, although lots of costumes are a bit "risky" so the anime may abuse of it (the ln illustration don't and there is ZERO ecchi fanservice in the text as well)

yhunata said:
Right, so how long before we get the "OMG, it ripped off Madoka" comments?

Technically, the influence of titles like Madoka can clearly be seen. But the cruelty is more direct, less subtle here. I personnaly clearly prefer the way MAdoka handled it in the series (not talking about the third movie there) than the way this author handled it in the novel. I clearly didn't felt sad for most of the deaths. The author didn't take the time to make me like the character. It's too fast. I hope further volumes don't do that again.
Now, rather than Madoka, it felt more in line with the very original Mahou Shoujo Kinshihou which at that time completely changed my way to see mahou shoujo. That may be why I felt like MSIK wasn't original, too. Kinshihou is far more extreme in its way to do things so reading the same kind after it will obviously seem like a "already seen that stuff".
So for peoples who didn't read Kinshihou (which should be like 99,99% on MAL since it's not translated) it may feel more original than it felt to me.

Anyway, it felt like the first volume was more of an introduction, to put some characters in a "specific" situation and to introduce us to what is going wrong currently with the magical girl system.
So really, if the further volumes aren't better than the first one then yes it's average at best. But there's hope definitely.

DJAnime254 said:
Is the LN dark/gory? It be interesting if it is. If they got SAO type deaths then I'm out.

Those mahou shoujo's powers are quite weird. And due to this, this makes some of the deaths very bloody because that's definitely not the kind of power supposed to be used against a human.

Paul said:
How dark and gory is this compared to Mahou Shoujo of the End? Would honestly rather get an adaption of that instead.

I haven't read MSotE but from the pics I've seen here and there, MSotE is far more gory than MSIK.

Orix said:
Another translation stated that the reason for the culling is because of "a lack of supply of magical energy".

SO WHY THE HECK DO THEY PRODUCE SUCH A GAME THAT MASS-PRODUCES MAGICAL GIRLS IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Christ, was this game developed by Kayaba or something?

There are proper and valid explanation so don't worry on that point. It may be average, but the plot is correct as it indeed makes perfect sense after reading the first volume.

"Deconstruction of Magical Girl Genre"

just getting dark doesnt make it a Deconstruction

I don't... think that MSIK can be called a deconstruction, at least not as far as volume 1 goes. Closest of a deconstruction would be Mahou Shoujo Kinshihou ImO (still waiting for a third volume on this one, that one is crazy xD... ). As I said above, MS Ikusei Keikaku basically takes a lots of ideas from the original MS Kinshihou ImO BUT it doesn't really follow through on the deconstruction part that Kinshihou is doing. Maybe on further volumes though. Too soon to judge, but the first volume didn't make me feel like it was among the goal of the MS Ikusei Keikaku author to do a deconstruction.

I don't even think anyone asked for this to be a deconstruction except for those complaining about Light Novels existing, correct?

This community and their buzzword dropping gives me a headache sometimes.

On the show: I'll watch, will have lower expectations than the next guy. But who knows if it will surprise me or not? Doubt it, but I'll stay alert.

I wouldn't call it a Madoka ripoff, but when that show came out and became the biggest thing since Jesus, and suddenly we start getting gritty and dark magical girl shows left and right, you can't help but think people are trying to cash in on the phenomenon.

"We want to make a bunch of people magical girls! Oops! We made too many, now we have to kill them off!" It sounds so deliberate it's painful.

I wouldn't mind a dark magical girl show if it wasn't always the same kind of "deceived into receiving powers that come with a terrible price/lots of suffering" thing.

At least in Daybreak Illusion the powers weren't specifically crafted to make the girls miserable or kill them.

Technically, just making a dark version of a wide theme isn't precise enough to have other works doing the same being called a rip off. I mean it's just combining mahou shoujo (very large theme since it doesn't indicate anything else than a CONTENT in the initial setting) and the "dark" part which simply say that it's going to be harsh.

THe fac that we got a lot since Madoka can be attributed to Madoka's success, yes. As such, we could say that Madoka has influenced this as well. But like I said before, the similarities stops there, so it stops far too soon to even start the pronunciation of the "r" of "rip off". Or else, any modern fantasy setting with dwarves and elves is a rip off of Tolkien's lord of the rings. And any love triangle is a rip off of the first novel (whatever it is) with that content. And so on. That's just plain s.t.u.p.i.d. especially since MAdoka isn't the first story with magical girl suffering a lot, it's just the one which made it popular.

"it sounds so deliberate it's painful" -> you haven't read the explanation. I can't say anything there without spoiling, but the reason is completely natural.

The highly popular social network game "Magical Girl Raising Project" is a miraculous game that produces real Magical Girls with a chance of 1 in 10000 for each person. Girls who are lucky enough to gain the power of magic spend fulfilling days. But one day, the administration arbitrarily announces that "There are too many magical girls so they will be halved." The curtain will now be raised on the relentless and merciless survival game between 16 magical girls. (Source: Baka-Tsuki)
