The Internet birthed a hashtag, #thingsfakerdoes. Some League fans nicknamed him the Unkillable Demon King; others simply referred to him as God. "I think of him on the same level as Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods -- people who brought their respective industries to the next level," says Jeon Yong Jun, a veteran announcer, or caster. "He was the first true global superstar."

this is a joke right

As someone who loves esport to the core, I have to agree with the people above. You can't compare someone who plays computer games with an athlete. These are two completely different things and people who compare these are delusional. I like to compare it to sports like chess instead which require no physical skills whatsoever, it just makes more sense as there is heavy strategy included in both.

"Unkillable Demon King" make me cringe so hard.

There's work behind his success though.

I'd rather compare him with a chess champion instead of a sport player. The sport part in E-sport is the fact that there's two teams fighting against each other, nothing more.

I think it's weird to call him the first global e-sports star. We've had one or two before.

Anyway, the comparison isn't quite valid yet, but mostly because e-sports are newish and golf/basketball are pretty old.

Skill-wise, neither requires more than the other as far as I can tell. Basketball is far more athletic, but on the dextrous side of things, they are all probably equal, with e-sports generally having greater focus on mental acumen.

This is the part of video gaming I am more than happily to ridicule and criticize.

Please do NOT compare REAL athletes with basement dwelling, doritos and mountain dew Champions.

And yes I'm stereotyping, relax it's a fucking joke....seriously though the real joke is thinking video games are anything other than God damn video games.

I think you guys are misunderstanding something, comparing as in

"Faker is to League like Michael Jordan is to Basketball"

or

"Faker is to League like Woods is to Golf."

It has nothing to with comparing League with actual athletic sports. If you guys actually read it, you'd realize the article's talking about how big Faker is in the world of League of Legends; similarly to how Jordan and Woods were in their respectable fields. Nothing more, nothing less.

I enjoy playing LoL but even I'd be had pressed to put Faker on that level. Now, if we call him the "Michael Jordan" of professional LoL, then sure, no problem since it's all relative to the other players in the League (i.e. Faker is to League of Legends as Michael Jordan is to Basketball). Though "esports" is far different from traditional sports. That being said, his mechanics are awesome!

It's obvious that Esports, isn't basketball or football with people with super-human speed and strength and size etc.
But it definitively requires a high level of skill and concentration. There are sports in the Olympics that require hardly any athletic ability.
I still remember this fat Korean archer guy who won the gold medal during the London Olympics.

Yes esports isnt a "physical" sport, but that doesnt mean that what this guy does isnt impressive. To be able to compete at the level he's at you probably need
1) Lightning fast reflexes comparable to some sports like badminton/ping pong
2) Excellent hand eye coordination comparable to Nascar racers
2) A strategic mind similar to pro sports league coaches

Also think about Poker. Poker is arguably not a sport, its a game, yet we dont see people hating on Doyle Brunson or Daniel Negreanu for sitting there asses at the poker table all day.

And yes NudeBear is right, the article is comparing Faker's INFLUENCE on the game of LoL to MJ's INFLUENCE on basketball. Its not comparing Faker's abilities or achievements to MJs

iirc this was a name given to Faker in Korean, so it might sound cooler in Korean (how, iono), but it was probably started on some random forum dedicated to LoL (Inven?)

This is honestly a tradition in Korean e-sports, which has often given rather ridiculous names to their pro players.

If you want to be a professional at the video game you're playing and become the best at it, of course its difficult. The training and dedication acquired to become the best is pretty intense.

I love reading comments like this though, especially from folks who sit at home all day like this guy. Sure, he's no NFL athlete or a tennis champion. Though, he worked for title and he himself deserves no hate for it. Hate the decision, not the guy who likely worked his ass off for it.

I think the consideration of playing one or a variety of video games professionally being a sport is at least on the verge of being plausible. Gaming has changed so much over the years: You can play online, professionally at events, stream live matches on twitch to entertain the masses. Video Games are no longer a "sit at home and rot" hobby. It has expanded onto the professional scene. You can create clans and even high budget professional tournament teams to entertain the fans. Its competitive and takes skill to master your craft.

No it isn't. There is nothing strenuous about sitting down playing games all day. Why do some people have problems accepting that?

Why does it matter that some people sit at home all day? We have absolutely nothing to do with the topic, so why bother mentioning it? It's just a cheap attack on people who disagree with you. And nobody in this thread said that they hate him personally. They dislike the fact that some people think e-sports is on the same level of real sports and that these "athletes" are an insult to people who pushed their bodies to the limit to get where they are.

This whole e-sports shit is just people trying to justify sitting down and playing games all day by labelling it as something that is socially acceptable.

Well whilst I agree that sitting on your arse playing video games is no where near athletic nor put in the same league (hur hur) as actual physical sports in terms of endurance or physical training involved

However it is still possible for people to push themselves too hard playing video games. The amount of focus you keep is so wound tight that it fucks your head and neck muscles, you're always tense and your body is always ready for the quickest reaction times. Basically its like putting your body on ready to jump out of the way mode for hours. Ive made myself actually sick putting too much into online gaming, hours and hours and hours of tension wore me out physically and made me ill for a few days after. Now I try to take it easier but its hard when you want to win and you want to be the best.
