Man, Hughes is one of the characters that really didn't deserve to die. :/ A man with such a good heart who cares for his friends and especially his family.. leaving a wife and a young daughter behind. That's sooo sad :(

Upsets me that a lot of people found Hughes annoying. Hughes was actually one of my favourite characters and I cried when he died. My tear ducts are still stinging. I'm glad Roy said "I will take vengeance for Hughes... are you with me?" and Riza's all "Do you even have to ask?" :)

R.I.P, Hughes... I was on the verge of shedding some tears, but refrained myself from doing so. Elicia's innocence during the burial was also quite sad.

I wonder what the Erlic Brothers' (and Winry's) reaction is going to be like when they find out that he is dead ;_:

What the hell just happened?? I first thought that this anime is just a waste of time, but things got complicated within this episode.
Those two bitches just slaughtered Hughes.
Elicia is left an orphan now.
BTW, have you realized that King Bradley is 3rd Hokage from Naruto.

No because your statement is absurd. Also Bradley >third hokage

A very emotional episode. After all we've seen of Hughes' family it really hits you hard to see him lose his life. And the contrast with the happy trio in the train...and finally Roy Mustang's scene: "It's raining"...Really good stuff.

Envy is a miserable little c**t and he better lose his life painfully and with much humiliation involved before this anime is over.

Besides, I heard the characters were all messed around with in that one, good guys being bad and vice versa, I don't see how it could work for me at all.

Untrue. Good guys are in no way "bad," but

I guess it's good the first anime was made, since it gained popularity and made the Brotherhood a) possible and b) BUDGET'D AS F*CK, but after Brotherhood got made, there's really no reason to watch the first one IMO. Aside from "what the heck is this, lol, they got it all wrong" feeling. Which some enjoy. I don't.

I understand this opinion, but I can't agree with it. The first anime tells a completely different story from Brotherhood - and it is incredibly excellent. If you go into it expecting it to be the same as the manga or being annoyed that they "got it all wrong" when it's meant to be entirely different, then yeah, you'll be sorely disappointed. If you go in expecting a completely different story, though, I don't see how anyone could dislike it.

Anyway, I don't know how but they managed to make this scene even more heartbreaking than it was in the first anime.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Except... it's a terrible day for rain."
"What do you mean? It's not raining."
"Yes. It is."

that was one of the sadest moments in anime i have had to date.
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

I'm going to say this to get it off my chest if I offend anyone I'm sorry. Why do people say Fullmetal Alchemist is the "original"? Originally it did follow the manga but strayed from it quickly which is why Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was created which follows the manga. So Fma:Brotherhood would be the original not Fullmetal Alchemist. Anyway, I always liked Hughes but I didn't cry ( only animes that have made me cry are Anohana and near the end of this one).

Who says that Fullmetal Alchemist is the original? It's like you said, FMAB follows faithfully the manga, instead FullMetal Alchemist takes a different route.

I can see where you're coming from. He didn't get as much character development this time around due to the removal of the fillers which didn't make him as lovable as he was in the original. I however found it more saddening because I already loved him as a character and to see him die only in a much more graphic depiction seriously made his death and the funeral scene much more tear-jerking for me.

Since my dad was killed in an accident when I was 10, I was just sitting here watching Elicia like, "I know those feels, bro. :'(" Losing a parent at a young age is absolute hell.

At the scene where Hughes talked to his daughter before going to work I thought : "Hughes is becoming way to much of a lovable character, theyre gonna kill him off arent they?"

5 mins later: "Called it!".

So far not to impressed by the highest rated anime on MAL. Its pretty damn predictable and honestly its not that great either. A close 7-8 for me for now.

I can't believe they killed off Hughes, he was becoming one of my fav characters. The moment when his daughter was asking her mum why daddy was being buried had me crying on the inside.
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! I've never forgotten the "It must be raining" scene - one of my favourite lines in anime.

It wasn't as sad in this version, but a lot of is has to do with the fact that I was expecting it. Things don't have equal emotional impact the second time around.

Damn.

Now I'm sad. Got really sad when his daughter was asking why he was being buried and then I teared up when Roy said it was raining.

Anyway, this show has been great so far. I can't say I'm super hyped over it yet, just because for the past ten episodes, I already knew what was going to happen (since I watched the 2003 ver before)

hi there, I see that you were discussing about maes hughes from fullmetal alchemist brotherhood and is quite the popular character. It appears that his death one of the saddest in all of anime, especially during his funeral. I would just like to say that and I might be the only one but I did not cry and didn't feel anything except feeling satisfied and relived that a overly loving, annoying, no good, overrated cheap supporting character died humiliated in a phone booth which cruel karma decided it was his time to leave. I know I might get a lot of backlash and hate from this and I am truly sorry If I hurt your feelings and I do respect your opinions regardless. But I never liked hughes to begin with and was always annoying with his pictures of his daughter and his impossible not to love personality. But some anime characters like hughes, good or bad die because the author can do whatever he or she wants to do and I am fine with that. But remember I have my opinions and you have yours so lets try to be respectful of each other and I intended no malice towards any of you fans of maes hughes, just hughes himself. Peace out

TBH this episode wasn't anything special for me. The "it's raining part" was spoiled to me already thanks to rabid weebtakus everywhere, and although I loved Hughe's character, he wasn't developed enough for me to really feel anything.

What really bothers me is that he went up to the telephone and decided not to call, then went to a public phone alone where an enemy can fight him?? That receptionist was stupid too. She just gasped and wah and wooh and sat back down. Based on my understanding, Hughe's death could've easily been avoided or put off.
