What is your favourite standalone episode in Anime?

By standalone, I mean it has to be an episode that anyone can sit down and watch without having watched the other episodes before it. These generally tend to have no plot, and whatever plot they do have doesn't carry on to the next episode. Not sure whether you should use spoiler tags or anything, but I'm using them anyway

Mine is from Ranma 1/2 when

Edit - Try describing the episode guys, please, even if it is in spoilers. Even if I've seen the series myself very recently, I'm not going to remember what happened in each specific episode. Telling me "episode 138" of Bleach won't help me understand/remember what the episode was about and why it was so great as a standalone episode.

Toradora: Bentou no Gokui. It involves Ryuuji competing with Kitamura's grandmother on making the best lunch. It's technically not part of the Toradora anime TV series though, but it's a hilarious episode. I gave it a 10/10. Anyone can watch it and get a good idea on what Toradora is like.

There's too many to choose from in Mushishi, but one would be episode 4, with the farmer and the dreams. The mix of fascination and tragedy were godly, completely top tier. I felt so empty at the end when it was revealed that -

The ending of that episode was surprisingly dark compared to the other Mushishi episodes, which usually end with more neutral feelings. Good choice.

Episode six of the first season of Railgun, where Mikoto joins judgment for a day and learns that, yes, being a cop is about a whole lot more than just electrocuting criminals. With one exception I don't think it is ever specifically referenced again, but I definitely think it increased her respect for her friends Uiharu and Kuroko. I think it's something you could watch and like without having seen any of the rest of the series, although I expect that some of the context of the world the show is set in would be missing.

The Steins;Gate 'standalone episode' is also REALLY good imo, but it isn't a standalone episode by the criteria established - I think there's no way it would have the same impact if one hadn't watched the series.

I have no idea, I wouldn't even seriously think of which episode of the 500+ anime I've seen has been the best.

But off the top of my head, HOTD OVA comes to mind.

Seriously, that Saeko and Rei naked Yuri kiss...one of the greatest scenes ever!

I found this ep to be the closest thing to perfection imo, there's nothing i can think of to make this episode better.

Something that confused the hell out of me was when I recommended Monogatari to a friend and he had something good to say to me about pretty much every episode in bake except for this one??

The episode in Gintama about a kid writing a journal about Madao was amazing (I think it was around 180-185). It shows that Gintama isn't just great for the comedy.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

This is a pretty cool question. I remember making a list of my favorite episode of each anime series that I've seen. Most of them fit your definition of a stand-alone episode.

Haiyore-Nyaruko San Episode 10
If you've seen the anime you know what I'm talking about. I swear the show would be nothing without Nyaruko's shenanigans

Toaru Majutsu no Index S2 Episode 17
This is all you need to know. I love the Toma x Misaka moments ^^

I agree mushishi is episodic by nature and doesnt have a strong plot that must be followed. its engrossing enough that you can enjoy it, just watching a single episode.

I think that the epsiode 180-185 range included the Popularity Poll arc. I believe it was between episode 185-190 if you're talking about the Madao episode involving the journal.

OT: Episodic anime usually have the best standalone episodes because continuity isn't as important. My favorite standalone episodes include Madaodog Millionare from Gintama', the one where Madao was in a game show (and was a parody of Slum Dog millionaire) among many others. I found that episode to be hilarious and sad at the same time... Madao has it tough. There are also other episodes I'd include, such as Ballad of the Fallen Angels or A Risky Racket from Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, respectively.

Ahh, awesome! I'm going to add that as a rewatch priority in that case. Madao episodes are always great at being hilariously sad.
