At the risk of being seen as a newbie to anime (-__- ;) this is an honest question I have been wondering for quite some time. The longest anime I've sat down and watched every episode of, was Naoki Urasawa's Monster; which has 74 episodes. I've also seen a large chunk of episodes from Naruto, but that's because I used to watch it weekly on Toonami when I was a kid. Although I doubt I could marathon all 220 episodes, then continue on to watch Shippuden; just thinking about that seems overwhelming.
The majority of anime's I do watch range from 12 - 50 episodes normally. Although lately I've been curious, as to what it is like to watch something really long and see what all the hype is about. My biggest concern would be starting the anime, then not finishing it because it's too long.
So if any of you have or do watch really long anime series, why and how do you do it? Is it preferable for an anime to have a ton of episodes?

Thanks!

For catching Detective Conan some months ago i watched between 10-13 episodes at day without watching other thing, and that is hard when some of them are 2 hours long.
If it's enjoable the lenght isn't a problem.

Most long anime go from bad to worse. The fact why people enjoy it is pretty simple actually.
See, all of these are shameless masochists, who torture themselves with watching these shitty anime, just for sexual pleasure fun.

pretty much that; some people started watching naruto/bleach on toonami or w/e, and were more interested in naruto/bleach than in anime in general
also when they finally become up to day, and look a little deeper into anime, they find the other long shonen stuff and watch them too
these are mainly gateway series to get you started; the 12-50 eps is where the fun is at

unless you have a fetish for the long running battle shounen tropes and filler episodes, it's better not to watch them, if you're already familiar with good anime

I think a lot of the really long series people have watched were the gateway anime that sparked their interest in watching other anime in the first place, and they've been keeping up with those anime for years.

That and just having really great patience getting through some of the more tedious arcs of the long anime.

I think long animes aren't a problem if they are good, and if you're talking about Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and etc it's because they've started watching since the beginning so they just have to watch one episode a week(in general).

The longer the anime the better in most cases. When I'm interested in the story and characters I usually want as much as I can get. So I usually prefer longer anime. I'm actually the opposite of most people, I usually find less show ruining flaws as the anime gets longer.

How?
I just watch them.
One Piece I started with while on holiday for times we were just sitting in our apartement or at night if I couldnt sleep

I recently started Naruto because I felt it could turn out to be a decent anime, I didnt really enjoy Naruto S1 that much, 2 much recollections of older episodes and the dreaded 80+ eps filler untill the end.
I finished it in 3 weeks, then decided not to watch Shippuuden right after because it probably wouldve been 2 much for me ^^

After watching Fringe (normal series, about as long as Naruto S1) I decided to give Shippuuden a try, and actually enjoy it so far, but I do hope it will get more interesting.

So just marathon it if you enjoy the show still after a few episodes, if not just watch it regurarly, as people had to wait each week for 1 episode, so you could do the same.
The good thing is you don't have to wait each week, you can decide to watch 1 more for example.

Well the ones where I watched a whole lot of episodes of the anime like 100+ episodes were DBZ, Naruto and the like. This was during my childhood where there were weekly, even daily broadcasts of these shows. Of course at that time I had nothing else good to do but watch tv. So it would be no surprise I would be able to watch 100+ episodes of those really long anime.

But now that I'm older and don't have a lot of free time, what I would do is find free time and marathon the anime, whether long or short. It doesn't matter if I finish it or not but watch as many as I can. On busy days, I still take time to watch 2 or 3 episodes to relieve my stress.

On the not of really long anime, I suggest that you don't rush it, especially the ones that you really like, because once they are finished, you would really feel empty and sad because it's finished. I say savor each episode as if it were your last. And it doesn't really depend on the number of episodes but the amount of enjoyment you can get from watching these shows.

I haven't watched that many anime that are very long. Only one's I can recall now are Dragon Ball Z, One Piece (dropped anime awhile ago), Naruto (dropped anime awhile ago), Bleach (dropped anime awhile ago).

Extremely long anime (like 300+ episode ones) I usually can't get into. If you have that much material its usually bound to get repetitive or boring at some point. Or just deliver inconsistent entertainment. Like for example in One Piece, I find some arcs of the series I really like, but then there are whole arcs (usually the # of eps of a normal anime series) that I either hate or don't like at all. I just think its difficult for creators/studios to deliver the same quality (and especially refreshing) content if it goes on for that long.

I love it when an anime or a manga can get entertain and you don't have to spend an insane amount of time to enjoy all the content in it. Like 50 or less episodes, max 100 or so eps.

Just an extra tidbit: Even with very long anime, its not extremely difficult to catch up with it if you are smart with your time and you are patient. You have 365 days in a year, you can watch at least one episode per day, and there will likely be vacation days where you watch much more than that. I actually watched/read the last half of one piece in summer 2012 in only about a 2 month period, with having a full time job and going out with friends once a week.

I think it all comes down just to how much you like a show and how much time you have. If you start watching a long one and you enjoy it a lot, you put the time in to catch up with it or finish it. Personally I don't have that much patience anymore for long running shows like that.

Some people think quantity > quality, or some derivative excuse.

I personally watch them out of curiosity, and keep watching because I can't just stop, and there is always SOME quality in it, albeit average.

If you're really interested: Never worry about catching up. Don't burn yourself out.

You just have to like it a lot. I don't see a reason to watch a long anime if I don't like it. Usually I keep breaks from watching and then enthusiastically marathon it. Then keep a break again and watch some anime with less episodes.
It doesn't take long to complete if you really like the show.

3 Ways to do it.

1. Watch it from the start. If you do this, then you have really only been watching one episode a week, so maybe a 20 minute investment of your time a week?

2. Marathon through it. You can go all in and watch several+ episodes a day and try to catch up or finish the series as fast as possible.

3. Slow and steady approach. If you watch an episode a day, then that is 365 episodes in a year. Just because an Anime is long doesn't mean you have to rush through it.

Anyways I guess just start watching it and then spend a loooong time watching. I think I started watching Naruto back in 2010 so yeah

For me, the length was never really a problem. As soon as I got completely hooked on them (which happened pretty soon after starting) I was extremely thankful for the episode count. That feeling you get when something's so good you don't want it to end anytime soon… well, that wish is pretty much granted ;) When I'd just watched the best episode ever and knew there were literally hundreds left, ahh, those were the days :P

As for how, I marathoned a lot. Especially during summer holidays.
So it basically comes down to the usual deciding factor: enjoyment. Lots of it.

How ~ If the start is promising, I finish it. And I don't understand why people just assume you have to marathon the series watching 10-50 episodes per day, there's no reason to finish it like there's a short time limit

Why ~ Because you can miss a lot of good shows for letting the length bother you which I find stupid. The longer the series, the longer you'll enjoy it and the more characters will grow on you

When I was younger it was easy because watching things on TV you don't really notice the length.
But now I hate long Animes, I don't know how older people can do it; to me I shouldn't even be watching anymore so I'm trying to finish all mine before I'm 20.

Well, most of the answers have already been given:

1. Watch them weekly from the start or catch up early-ish and keep watching them weekly. Been keeping up with Naruto and One Piece since 7 or 8 years now, a lot of episodes accumulate during that time. The new HxH, Toriko, Fairy Tail or Uchuu Kyoudai are shows I watch/have watched weekly since the first episode. I don't know if I would have gotten into Fairy Tail and Toriko otherwise, though I'd have loved the other two either way.

2. Skip Fillers if they bore you. Naruto for example is surprisingly enjoyable if you skip the fillers, imo. Skipping the fillers doesn't save Bleach though.

3. If you really like the series you'll be glad there's so much to watch. In any case just go with your own pace. I marathoned the first 37 episodes of Prince of Tennis in the last 2-3 days but today I'll take a break to catch up with ongoing shows. But I've also marathoned 100+ episode series without much need for a break in the past. It depends.

4. Long series are limited to a few core genres (mahou shoujo, battle/card game/pokemon shounen, sports and s-o-l though most of those long-running s-o-l series don't get subbed) so if you don't enjoy those you probably won't find many 100+ episode series that are to your liking.
I probably regret this post by now.

If you want to watch a long series, just be prepared. You have two choices:

- Catch up/be finished with it as soon as possible, hence watching it non-stop and excluding any other anime from your field of vision.

- Take it easy and watch with calm.

Either way, it all depends on whether you like the series or not. In my case, I caught up with the Detective Conan manga, which has a whopping 885+ chapters. Yeah, it's not an anime, but it's still long.

Nowadays I don't watch long series anymore.

100 episodes isn't even that much if you compare to live-action series. Generally speaking watching stuff is a whole lot more enjoyable (and also faster) if you don't concern yourself with such meaningless bullshit.

I have watched and completed Naruto (marathon) all 220 episodes... And I'm caught up on Shippuden. Why? Because I've gotten to far to stop now. Watched Naruto a while back and I want to see how it ends, for better, or for worse.

Sure it's frustrating at times but it's still semi enjoyable to watch now. I have no real reason to stop watching it. =^-^=

Well it's all up to how much you enjoy the show. One Piece destroyed me, I fell in love with it and marathoned like 250 episodes in 2 weeks. Also you don't really need to catch up to the series. Just go at your own pace and enjoy it for what it is, not how long it is.

Don't feel like having a whole convo about Naruto in this thread(especially when it's not necessarily about that). But I will say that being almost(as it's less than half) of the episodes be fillers is not necessarily a bad thing even for a longrunning series. For the most part they were enjoyable, they took place at the end so they are easy to skip, and provided screen time for the other genins. The only thing they really did wrong was slow the overall pacing and even that was only a small problem.

Just watch it in the train, when going to bed, while eating etc.

You can easily get 15 Episodes a day and you only need about a month to finish it. Easy.

I just finished Supernatural Season 1-9 Marathon. Each episode is 40 Minutes long.
