It's nice that the director of GaruPan and the guy who created AKB0048(yeah I know Macross is way more important but haven't seen any Macross) get recognized.

Yeah, kinda weird the OP didn't mention Girls und Panzer at first.. since thats the reason he won the award in the first place, not for his old titles released before this year.

Why would you ever think that Karneval would have been given a major award? It was both a show that got an average at best reception and didn't put up huge numbers. It was just another show.. its as likely as any other average show from the last year showing up in a major award show.

Karneval is not average. Karneval is an interesting show. I don't think SnK deserves all these awards because when you look at it, SnK is an average show too. It's characters are dull, other than a few of them, it's art isn't spectacularly, superbly amazing, the OST is trying too hard to give off that Two Steps from Hell feeling,(Which it will NEVER accomplish, BTW) the OP/ED were just not good, and the plot isn't original. Yes, Karneval may not be the most original, but it's far more interesting than SnK. Karneval's characters actually have depth. I like most of the characters, except for a FEW (Jiki, Kiichi, Uro, Karoku(Just for the anime, the anime makes him out as a douche), and Eleska) In SnK, I only LIKE 4 characters (Levi, Armin, Annie and for some ungodly reason, Jean) the rest are dull and plain. I'm not saying Karneval is interesting because of Bishounens. I hate when people assume that. Karneval is interesting because the art is done beautifully and the story is interesting and complex.

I would bet the award is mostly for what he did for GirlPan....
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Believe me, I love Karneval too but the adaptation was poor, so many scenes were either skipped or rushed(I still can't forgive them for removing the scene where Gareki comforts Nai) not to mention the stupid anime original ending.

Besides, it only sells about 4.5k or so while SnK whether you like it or not, has crossed 80k for it's first volume.

.....see what I mean?

Personally, I don't want Karneval to be up there because it deserved a much better adaptation.

Actually just found that the official explanation for Mizushima's award is indeed because of Girls und Panzer and how it managed to revive a town (Ooarai) put low by the earthquake and the tsunami:

個人賞に水島努監督が選ばれたのは、『ガールズ&パンツァー』の功績が大きい。
選考理由として「アニメで町おこし」の成功例として新聞テレビのニュースで取り上げられるなどで大きな話題となったこと、水島監督の初の完全オリジナル作品ということなどが挙げられている

I've read the manga, yes the anime does seem a little fast-paced, but that's because they didn't give it a longer series. Trust me. there are anime that deserve longer series, and some that shouldn't be extended. And Karneval is one of those that should have had 24 episodes.

And I don't see why Karneval sold so less, it's much better than Isayama's unproportional, shitty art and plain characters. And you know the reason why SnK's volumes are selling so much? Because of the anime adaption. He would have stayed less known if they didn't give him an anime adaption. So really, he should thanking the anime for getting his manga so popular. Otherwise, it would have just been another manga with shitty art that is not widely known.

You are just bashing SnK because you dont like it. Just because you dont like it doesnt mean it shouldnt be popular. The people in Japan like it and thats all that really matters.

Actually the panel has given quite detailed reasons for each award given. As I said Mizushima Tsutomu got it mostly because of Girls and Panzer and his contribution to reviving Ooarai and spread mainstream awareness of the town as well as anime. And the decision for Shingeki was the smoothest because consensus was quickly reached. It gave a bunch of reasons from achievement in animation quality for action to spectacular BD/DVD sales to international popularity but the main reason is how the anime entertains a large sector of audience including non anime fans. Very broad appeal that extends beyond the established target audience base is the key reason for its getting the award.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

Calm down. Jeez. Everyone has his or her own opinion on things. Especially anime and manga. You guys should stop having a "heated discussion" here - this stuff here isn't for your personal tastes. If you disagree, that's fine, but that doesn't mean you can go about forcing your opinion onto others, even if it IS the opinion of the "vast majority". Nor do you have to comment with exasperation about ANOTHER show that should have been there. Just leave it alone if you can't stop arguing.

Im not forcing my opinion on others, Im just saying what the Japanese like is the only thing thats important here.

So, nobody else but the Japanese matter? Wow. That is basically cutting out most anime fans.

Hmmm, it is clear this is just a popularity contest. Shinsekai Yori and Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 were both far better series that aired this year than Shingeki no Kyojin, whilst Shingeki no Kyojin ain't a terribly bad series, it ain't exactly good either.
That said, I appreciate that Shingeki no Kyojin has invited more people into the anime medium.

I was thinking it's just a popularity contest. Don't get me wrong, I 100% agree that Miyazaki got that award. He is amazing. But, I'm glad someone else thinks that there were better series than Shingeki this year and that Shingeki isn't amazing, but it isn't horrible either.

Well, anime is basically made by Japanese for Japanese, and most of the revenue and business for anime is located in Japan anyway, so why should an anime award from a Japanese organisation care about fans outside Japan that much ?? And how can you tell how many anime fans outside Japan compared to those inside it? Why do you think "most anime fans" are not Japanese? And even if this were true (which is doubtful) I am sure money generated from outside Japan is very small by comparison. And even so, Shingeki got the award with "international popularity" quoted as one reason, so it is not as if zero consideration was made towards fans outside Japan.

They are the ones that support the medium by buying BD's, merchandise, soundtracks, etc. Even if there are some western fans that support the medium by buying licensed goods, it doesnt really mean anything in terms of profit.

IIRC, the Anime industry makes likes billions in Japan while outside its in millions. So, its pretty clear which audience is their priority.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying that anime fans outside Japan dont matter, rather that the Japanese audience has and probably will always be more important.

Come on now, we all know SnK would have won the award regardless if it was popular outside of Japan or not. No need to delude ourselves.

I've read that people in America are more into anime than the Japanese. Not as in, the Japanese don't weirdly advertise their stuff, but more fans are more into it. I think it's kind of rude to just cut out all other fans that aren't Japanese. And, I'm sure the Japanese don't make anime just for Japanese people. They aren't that inconsiderate to not think they don't have tons of fans outside of Japan. If they do that, they are losing A TON of money.

I would need some source of proof then because it is not what a lot of people think. Besides EVEN IF Americans were more into anime, how does it prove that Americans thus should have the say? As I, as well as many here, have said already, in terms of business and focus, anime is always a Japanese thing. We are all extras that go along, and even though it has more recognition than the past, we are still very much a minor presence in the view of anime industry.

I think it is even ruder to assume that we overseas fans should be entitled to some say and influence for an award inside Japan when we have contributed so little to the baseline of the industry.

Well, the fact and reality speaks for themselves. You already have a lot of anime fans outside Japan (following what you said) but where is the money? Ask yourself - how much do you spend in anime every month or every year? The fact is that EVEN though the industry knows about the growing number of fans outside Japan, they don't see how that can be monetised and turned into revenues. And this is the current situation. What you say is actually reversing the cause and effect - it is not "they don't consider overseas fans" -> "they lose money" BUT "there is no way to turn overseas fandom into money making business that is worth the risk and effort" -> "better focus only on domestic market; if I venture overseas, I might really lose A TON of money"

MAL is only an opinion site for those who acknowledge that what they say is an opinion. That's something you're not doing, you think as if what you say is fact. Furthermore, you are taking everything way to personally and are being too hypocritical. Lighten your tone and people might start being more respectful to you back, I'm sure no one would attack your taste if you did that. Try to keep things civil and I'm sure others will as well.

Since when the hell do people care about Karneval? I honestly forgot it existed.

Seriously quit whining because your favorite anime didn't win an award. Awards dont equal quality, you know that right? I can't show this award to someone as actual proof that SnK is the best anime ever, because in the end awards never are equal to the actual quality of an anime, but the overall reception, enjoyment, and presentation of it. Just because something wins something DOESN'T necessarily mean it's amazing/great. Calm down, please.

And WHY are you even comparing Karneval to SnK??? Why???? SnK is longer than Karneval and is a totally different demographic and genre and everything. Like, where's the comparison coming from?

No, I actually try to be nice to people on here. But whenever I do something wrong, like say I say something in a review, I get a flood of hate comments and my review deleted.

From their quality, they're on the same level.
