The official website of the Lupin III anime series announced a new anime movie for the franchise on Friday, revealing a teaser trailer. The movie, tentatively titled Lupin the IIIrd the Movie, will premiere in theaters in Japan in 2025.

This marks the first 2D movie in the franchise in 30 years since Lupin III: Dead or Alive premiered in 1996. A longer version of the teaser trailer (approximately two minutes) will be shown after the revival screening of the 1979 movie Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro (Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro), which will be in theaters beginning Friday, November 29.

Voice actors Kanichi Kurita, Akio Ootsuka, Miyuki Sawashiro, Daisuke Namikawa, and Kouichi Yamadera are reprising their roles from the previous installments.

Staff
Director: Takeshi Koike (Lupin the IIIrd: Jigen Daisuke no Bohyou)
Script: Yuuya Takahashi (Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai)
Music: James Shimoji (Hinomaruzumou)
Creative Advisor: Katsuhito Ishii (Redline)
Studio: Telecom Animation Films
Production, Copyright: TMS Entertainment
Distribution: TOHO NEXT

Lupin III: Part 6 (Lupin the 3rd Part 6), the latest installment in the franchise, aired in 24 episodes in Fall 2021. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime in North America and simulcast it on HIDIVE with subtitles. A six-episode prequel anime titled Lupin Zero streamed exclusively on DMM TV from December 2022 to January 2023.

The Lupin x Takeshi Koike universe continues! I seriously thought they had abandoned these films. This is probably gonna focus on Zenigata, making it the 2nd last film of the franchise. I hope I'm right because I don't want this amazing franchise to end just yet 😂

@deg I sincerely hope you're wrong. If this one focuses on Zenigata that means we likely have one more of these in the works where a Lupin focused film wraps things up nicely.

@Genoard We are just following what the sources says ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's just assumptions, but I think what they meant by that is that it's the first 2D movie in 30 years to be a full-length movie going in theaters nationwide.

All of the 2D stuff after Dead or Alive were TV specials or in the case of Koike movies, less than an hour long.

How are the different Lupin series related? Is it something like PreCure and Gundam or do they all take place in the same universe?

@bastek66 @EcchiGodMamster It's only a temporary title, the real one will probably be a bit cooler :D

@DatRandomDude They're also excluding the crossover movies.
They're really stretching their definition of "first 2D movie in the franchise in 30 years" lol

@RobertBobert I only started watching from "Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna" but from there, there are 2 different continuities.
One is:

  • Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna (TV series)
  • Jigen Daisuke no Bohyou (Koike movie)
  • Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon (Koike movie)
  • Mine Fujiko no Uso (Koike movie)
  • Very probably the movie from this news

The other one is:

  • Part 4 (TV series)
  • Part 5 (TV series)
  • Part 6 (TV series)

This anime is very episodic though, even if the seasons usually have some kind of overarching story. Especially Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna from what I can remember.
However, the continuity from season to season is rather thin. Apart from the main cast, we may see a few characters from previous season and some events might be mentioned but if one jumped into the latest season, nothing vital would be missed.
Most importantly, each continuity has its distinct tone. The "Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna" one feels more gritty than the part 4/5/6 one.

Before that, I'm not sure but I read that the anime was even more episodic.

@RobertBobert Kinda yeah.
I think the different TV series that are called "Part X" are the mainline.
And "Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna" followed by the Koike movies are some kind of darker reboot of the franchise. I read that this one is closer to the tone of the manga but I didn't read it so I can't vouch for that statement.
And the 2 are being released side by side.

I don't know where all the other movies and specials stand though. Maybe some side-stories of the mainline? I'm not knowledgeable enough about the franchise to know :'D

@ginko29 I originally thought that Lupin was some kind of inherited gimmick and title that was passed between characters.

I'm thinking the movie will be released after the Conan movie is released... Since the number of theaters seems to be small, I would like to go see the movie if it is well-received right after its release.

Will this again only last about 50 minutes like the other Koike films? I'm not sure if that's enough for Mamo, who is being developed here as the great antagonist of the Koike films. Not that he deserves it, The Secret of Mamo was, alongside Green vs Red, for me the worst Lupin the III media.
