Maybe it's already the time for Kyoani to actually come out from their comfort zone and create something completely different They already sort of that did that with Free. What i meant by "not coming out from their comfort zone" is that there is nothing daring about majority of their works on the surface (Free! is nothing different). KyoAni is so firmly entrenched in a world of frivolity and idealism that they will never be able to put their talents as animators to any higher artistic purpose. They don't strive to be anything more than what they are. I'd be angrier if it were not for the Kyoukai announcement. EDIT : And frankly i'm one of those enraged fanboys upon the announcement of Free! They need to start catering to the avant-garde audiences. Screw doing things they want to do. They need to suck it up and take their talents to south beach. Maybe then they'll be able to win not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7, emmies ( Or whatever their equivalent is in Japan ). Seriously, trophies and recognition in the art world is what matters here. Get your shit together KyoAni. |

Amiluhur said: And from previous discussion of things like omnibus format, you already showed that you treasure innovation A LOT, and I would say probably a lot more than the buying consumers are prepared to take, or the risk deemed tolerable by the studio. One thing that should be clear is that KyoAni indeed has taken risk and everything they have tried since Haruhi has been one probe into something a bit different from the other, though indeed what they have opted for is incremental change that always keeps their well-known style and approach. And even this more cautious approach does not guarantee consistent success (check Tamako) because those probes into new areas still clearly carry risks and there are simply few people who will just buy their work just because they have KyoAni imprint on it. Saying that they are entrenched in frivolity and idealism is really missing the point, big time. It is as if to say that there is no worthy artistic value in the kind of popular entertainment they do -- just simply a classic case of elitist snobbery. So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Oh well, not going to continue any further then (simply being called elitist is already a turn-off for discussion for me). You've got your points and i've got mine, though i'm not going to change my opinions on Kyoani unless this show manages to be something different than their usual tiny circles. |

^ When you demand a studio, which is not large (yes, not even KyoAni is considered large) and makes product for popular entertainment, to strive for some higher "artistic purpose", whatever you define, while neglecting their risk-taking and attempts to try something new, just because their style strikes you as "frivolous", it is all hallmark of elitism. Nothing more. |

I think it's just simply that if so many people are going to continue to have this attitude that Kyoani is so much better than every other studio out there and that there's some sort of tier structure with them and maybe SHAFT alone at the top that they should you know...prove it. Though truthfully I think this is an unrealistic prospect built on wishful thinking, increasingly loud hubbub, and a disproportionate degree of fanboyism/hype/possessiveness surrounding the studio and the degree to which their output is weighted against everything else being produced on the internet more than anything else so really they don't have to prove anything so much as people need to better recognize the reality of what they are and what they aren't as a creative force and that the people working there are indeed human beings with deadlines to meet and shareholders to answer too and not some sort of demi gods that tower over anime culture or however it's imagined by this community and just enjoy the shows or don't and try to bring it down to Earth a bit more. That though I believe is also wishful thinking on my part sadly. Anyway this looks somewhat promising, but obviously I'm going to actually watch it before pondering what it is and what I think about it. My main area of concern is the script and whether it will be strong enough and the characters interesting and well realized enough to keep me interested as I've never felt Kyoani has been particularly strong in this department where my standards are concerned save when Shoji Gatoh is involved. There's this tendency for their usual stable of writers to fall back on the really fluffy idealistic stuff that one user here pointed out that I don't think would work well with what I've seen in the trailer and what I think people are expecting of this so hopefully they can cut down on that sort of thing and really focus for a change on delivering where drama is concerned without having it come across as artificial and disingenuous (latest example would probably be episode 6 of Free) like I've often found is the case with most of their output, again save when Shoji Gatoh has been involved. |

If there is any tier structure - it is only limited to expectation and hype, and it is in large part related to KyoAni and Shaft having some of the most recognizable styles and some of the most memorable/popular works made in recent time. That said, I think the "tier structure", if there is any, only extends this far. I do not see any particular tier structure when it comes to actual sales or fan feedback when the works are aired. From what I see, watchers still judge a show as how interesting and appealing it is, not some a-apriori preconception about which studio makes it. So it still comes to what those studios can prove themselves by the works they make, more than anything like brand recognition, that is the major factor of why a certain show they make sells. As for script, I have always lament over the over-obsession by western fans on script and this is still one big gap of expectation between western fans and Japanese fans (recently I read an analysis about American gamers complaining Japanese games not having good story - so it is clearly not just an anime thing). But it goes both way I guess since I have also read comments from Asia area saying American comics too talkative and get their story and setting overly complex. All I want to say is that from what I observe, fans in Japan care a lot less about "story"/"plot" than most of the western fans and they place much heavier emphasis on things that western fans often glance over and put little weight - like character design, situational interactions, balance of moe-ness and fan service or the kind of humor used. |

I merely ask that I find the script in some way interesting so that I have a reason to continue watching a show and care about what happens to any significant degree. I just tend to get middling feels from shows that are content to focus on things like moe appeal and fanservice as you said. I think good character designs and character interactions are important but if they're all just kind of every day laid back things then odds are it's going to have a tough time standing out to me unless I really care about the characters. So basically yeah a lot relies on the script and screenplay to make me care about what I'm watching before it comes down to the other things. I don't see how those two things can be thought of as anything other than the backbone upon which a memorable story rests. And yes there seems to be something of a gulf between what Japanese fans now find interesting and what Westerners will watch. For example nobody outside of the internet that I know is remotely interested in something like Monogatari or Free nor would know what they are, but things like Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball Z Battle of The Gods, Ghost In The Shell Arise, Sword Art Online (strangely enough perhaps) and Gundam come up a fair bit in terms of recent anime when it comes to people I know IRL that enjoy anime. Especially Attack on Titan, I think that show has the real potentially to be the first major hit on Western shores in a while. |

I merely ask that I find the script in some way interesting so that I have a reason to continue watching a show and care about what happens to any significant degree. Kaioshin_Sama said: Bear in mind that character designs and character interactions that you like and aspects you focus on can be very different from what the fans in Japan look at. For example, I am sure that when you talk about character designs, you think in terms of story and development, but in Japan a lot of focus would be on the visual part and art/sakuga aspects. So what stands out to them may be just neglected or brushed aside by you. I think good character designs and character interactions are important but if they're all just kind of every day laid back things then odds are it's going to have a tough time standing out to me unless I really care about the characters. Kaioshin_Sama said: I can tell you a lot of western comic/animation, even the acclaimed ones, fail to excite me and there are all kinds of reasons behind it, from story to settings to visual art etc, but I won't call the western entertainment style as boring, inferior or lacking. Well that's a tough question. I wanna say "yes" because there is only 2 volumes and volume one only has a prologue, 4 chapters, and a epilogue (this is me assuming they use the 13 episodes to adapt everything). But the director could change things up like they did with Chuunibyou and the story could be split up into two seasons. If that is the case then I have no clue because I don't know when she appears in the LN. All I can say for certain is that she does not appear in chapter one. EDIT: I asked Nakulas (the person translating the LN) about this Nakulas said: I'd be surprised if Maiya doesn't appear in the show, since [character name withheld] is intimately involved in her plot thread, and [character name withheld] is on the character chart on the Kyoukai-anime website. |

List of differences between novel and anime ・Apparently, Yuuto Mashiro is replaced with Sakura Inami *Yuuto is very important man for story and he is old friend of Mirai. I'm not sure whether he will appear in the future on anime series. ・Due to that replacement, It is possible Mashiro family is not exist on anime series. ・Character designs except 4 main characters are completely fresh and first look even for readers of LN. (There are no illusts of them in LN) ・Youmu monsters have more variety (Flying Youmu looks like dragon never appeared in LN) ・Youmuseki (Youmu-Stone) is anime original thing ・Unlikely to LN, Shizuku Ninomiya is teacher of their school ・First appearance of Miroku Fujima is vol.2 of LN. But he is shown in 2nd trailer, so his first appearance in anime is moved forward ・anime version Ayaka Shindo has a little sister, Ai Shindo. ・Mirai bleed from her palm instead of her wrist when she create blood sword. And she seal it with bandage on anime, while she just cover and hide her cut with many bracelets. can be expected many plot changes and new plot addition for anime |
