Since I'm quite positive right now and filled with joy, moving aside the degenerate talk

Has there been a time, at least once, you thought, "I'm glad I got into this medium" or "Anime has entertained for the longest time"? If so, why did you think of this?

I'm all butterflies and rainbows right now.

Too bad this wasn't posted on MD, because I'm definitely in the mood of writing yet another essay on my favourite manga. You dodged a bullet there!

Kaiji and Nichijou made me feel like this. Both these two (three if counting Kaiji's two seasons separately) anime thoroughly entertained me. The former was just extremely interesting and made me want to watch episode after episode, so it was a true delight. The latter on the other hand was the right kind of comedy for me. I love randomness in an ordinary setting.

I was about to write an actual reply, but my brain isn't in the best of moods right now, so I'll keep it quick. I'm glad I got in this medium and think of it as a good decision, even though I wouldn't say that in public.

No. It took me about a decade to finally enjoy anything in it minus a couple scattered examples.

I'm too much of a filthy casual and too picky to be like "whoa, im super glad I did this". Sure I've enjoyed stuff but I've never praised the medium itself like a beacon of light. Its just something else to do when I'm not writing, driving, or playing games.

When I finished Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, and subsequently sobbed for 30 minutes or so, I was quite appreciative of the medium for being able to tell such a story.

Then I cursed it vehemently for breaking my heart and stealing the 2D light of my life.

Ah, memories~

Nowadays it's just a fact of life to me, I'm just happy about discovering individual shows or by them being unexpectedly awesome, being glad I watch anime would seem like a normal person being glad they watch Hollywood. But I remember when I discovered my university had an anime club and attending for the first time, with very limited experience of the medium. And seeing episodes of six things, of which both Excel Saga and Nadesico delighted me in ways I was completely surprised by, while Lain just blew my mind completely. That was one of the best nights of my life, the feeling of a whole new world opening up in front of me.

I also felt kind of like that the first time I watched KareKano, and CCS. Because those were things totally unlike anything I'd ever enjoyed before, in genres I had automatically dismissed, and yet, here was anime, making them enjoyable. And not just enjoyable, actually pretty great.

Yeah, multiple times already since I've first started. I appreciate anime because it's given me another form of entertainment to fill my life. Not only that, but the shows produced have given me an array of topics to ponder about which I wasn't aware before, introducing me to many characters, soundtracks, art styles and animations that I've enjoyed watching. I like how this fictional medium can play around with my emotions, creating happiness, sadness or even anger. It's all the things that made me appreciate anime.

Of course through anime, I've also seen many cool people who are passionate about anime too.

Both combined are my exact sentiments. A few things in anime I find aren't offered in western TV.

To support the industry I did purchase some manga and LN when they were on sale. Figurines etc are too much for me

I constantly feel glad I got into anime.
For the last 4 years now, anime has been my addiction/compulsion.
There are far worse and/or more expensive things to be addicted to.

I don't have to wait 1 hour for every episode of anime I watch, before I can legally drive.
I don't have the State telling me it's ok while the Feds are telling me anime is illegal.
I don't have to compete with bids in excess of $50k for a rare anime at an auction.

Yeah, I appreciate anime.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I haven't been watching for "a very long time". There was roughly a 20 year span that I don't think I even watched a single anime. (approx 1992-2012)

As for shifts and trends of anime...
With a higher volume of source materials out there, there's more to choose from, but there's also often less material to adapt for each, thus a higher count of shorter series vs long-runners.
Trends seem to be shifting from adapting well-established stories, to adapting the latest hype.
So for many studios now, every show or season is becoming more of a gamble that could bankrupt them if it flops, as opposed to in the past when studios seemed to be able to survive a couple series with poor sales.

I won't pretend like I'm an expert on this, so I won't try to say that these changes & shifts are good or bad, they're just different.

That's a fair assessment, I also just jumped back in after being out of the loop for ~2005-mid 2017.

A rise in free market capitalism does lead to more corporate greed. I guess the latest thing these days is to give the audience blue balls so they go out and buy the source material, with no guarantee that the anime will continue afterwards.

An influx of new studies also means going for the safe adaptation, as you said with no assurance of profit after paying all the dues.

It does suck in the end when there are great stories that the big boys could adapt but won't

Who knows what the future holds though, Game of Thrones was niche until HBO took it on and exploded its popularity to staggering heights.

I'm uncertain as to how much the studios play a part in deciding what to adapt as opposed to being hired to adapt something by a committee.
If they're just getting hired, then it can't be said they're only going for the "safe" stories to adapt.
No matter who is doing the choosing, your point is valid that "safe" stories seem to be the trend, which is to ride the coat tails of stories or formulas that have been successful.

GoT wasn't really "niche", I'm sure people that are avid readers of that genre knew about it.
It's popularity soared because HBO adapted something with gratuitous nudity, murder, and offensive language.
People were more willing to set aside 1 hour per week to watch it, rather than set aside time to read a book.

In today's society of political correctness, GoT sorta shocked some people into remembering "hey, I actually like this sort of stuff".

I wonder if anime today is anywhere close to what people back in the 70's or 80's imagined it might be like "in the future".

Fair enough, I was not in the know as with others of those in my generation, most were probably hung up on the Harry Potter novels and cringe inducing YA fodder like Twilight.

if i remember correctly, the overwhelming push for political correctness and buzzwords like SJW didn't come into the public sphere until about 2014-15, then again it could be my bias as I always was into violent entertainment like WWF, UFC, FPS games etc where there isn't much emphasis on being politically correct at all

The last point is intriguing as Back to the future had many wild predictions for the late 2010s, as with other works of fiction like 2001: A Space Oddysey. From what i've gathered, we tend to forecast on current emerging trends but many times data manipulation can't account for confounding variables in the future

Case in point, my older brother began his higher education in 2008 right after the housing bubble burst. The forecast called for a bounce back in the future, and as such finance jobs would be in demand. Obviously it didn't turn out that way, and those jobs never materialized.

Sometimes I wonder what would I do if not anime and often end up thinking that I would probably watch series and movie with real people which I haven't done in years and dislike that idea because "real" shows are more limited than anime, some things are just impossible to show and they all "look" the same - there are no different art styles because it's just filmed.
I like books, manga and anime but anime is my favorite because you can hear the characters, see them moving and as it may not be anything special for many people because "you can always imagine these things while reading manga / books" I'm still happy that they're there as they can make a scene more emotional than it was in the original or make the action more intense. I also got to know some people thanks to anime so yeah, I'm glad that I got into this wonderful world of imagination.
I'm watching anime since 2012. I also play games, sometimes.

Don't bother me if you want to 'become friends' or things like that.

Hmmm, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 94. My life essentially crashed and burned. A massive dose of depression and a desire to just die. I lost the ability to cry and to feel. Basically emotionally dead.

Anime gave me the ability to cry again. Simple, and silly and funny. I watched it mainly so I could experience crying. Sappy relationship driven shows. Emotional content. Air TV is a good example.

So yeah, anime has given to me in ways hard to really describe.

Whenever I start watching a new show that I really enjoy and it reminds me of how anime is capable of so much.
I enjoy Western cartoons and live-action TV as well, but I feel like anime is the medium that truly takes advantage of everything animation has to offer. There's so much more opportunity for interesting symbolism and imagery, creative settings, character designs, storytelling methods, etc, which live action simply isn't capable of doing (and which Western cartoons could do, but often choose not to).
So, whenever I see directors like Akiyuki Shinbou, Kunihiko Ikuhara, and Shinichiro Watanabe (among others) push the limits and take full advantage of what they can do within the realm of animation, it makes me really glad that I got into anime.

I think Gintama for me or the monogatari series makes me remind myself why I love anime mostly how it can either be hilarious or wtf moments to sad and pretty gory moments. Anime can even make you feel relatable to that specific character and that makes me love anime. (also I think it’s more enjoyable to watch then shows besides cartoons from adult swim)
