I rewatched that part many times and then I've figured out it was "mate for life" by myself. I couldn't understand well the word "mate", but, knowing penguins are monogamous, I made some research and find out the "mate for life" expression :)
I'm obsessed with that idea too! In Lain, "perception is reality". If everybody think that something is real, then it's real. If Lain believes the rumors on the web, then those will be reality. Thanks to that video I discovered a lot of thing related to the argument, and a lot of authors (Like Douglas Rushkoff) who theorized the idea of the "human collective brain". Chiaki J Konaka made an insane work on the script of the anime. All the things people consider just put there to give an "idea of conspiracy" are just little pieces of a bigger puzzle.
Also the direction of Nakamura was top notch. (You should definitely try Ghost Hound. It will remind you about Lain more than once).

Utena and MP surely have similar themes and artistic choices.
I am finding Utena a little bit harder to follow, maybe because it's the older one, and also has many elements of the shoujo genre I usually don't like. But I heard that after the first saga (ep 1-13) it turns into a much deeper anime.
It'd be cool if you made videos on Utena too ;)
Speaking about Lain, there are a ton of analysis, reviews, essays and even university thesis on that anime. But I disagree with most of them, since they focus on internet or the nature of Lain as extraterrestrial. Lain is an anime about people connections, and how they perceive reality, which is influenced by the collective unconscious. Internet is only a medium.
I found this review to be the best one, for now.

Well, I don't blame you
They are quite hermetic shows, that target very specific audience. But judging by your taste, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy them. I personally prefer Utena because of its MASSIVE (and quite agressive) use of symbolism, with tons of refrences (and autorefrences), but also being quite emotional and genuine overall. I find Texhnolyze to be the exact opposite, but that is far from being a bad thing. It plays quite well within its raw subtlety, that it seems kinda harmonic to watch, regardless of how dark the show is.
It's really up to you which one you think would suit you better
I am studying physics at my local university. Pretty good department, third best in Europe I am hearing. Do not really know, but I am enjoying my time there (even though were on exam period currently.)
