Spy x Family

Corrupt politicians, frenzied nationalists, and other warmongering forces constantly jeopardize the thin veneer of peace between neighboring countries Ostania and Westalis. In spite of their plots, renowned spy and master of disguise "Twilight" fulfills dangerous missions one after another in the hope that no child will have to experience the horrors of war.

In the bustling Ostanian city of Berlint, Twilight dons the alias of "Loid Forger," an esteemed psychiatrist. However, his true intention is to gather intelligence on prominent politician Donovan Desmond, who only appears rarely in public at his sons' school: the prestigious Eden Academy. Enlisting the help of unmarried city hall clerk Yor Briar to act as his wife and adopting the curious six-year-old orphan Anya as his daughter, Loid enacts his master plan. He will enroll Anya in Eden Academy, where Loid hopes she will excel and give him the opportunity to meet Donovan without arousing suspicion.

Unfortunately for Loid, even a man of his talents has trouble playing the figure of a loving father and husband. And just like Loid is hiding his true identity, Yor—who is an underground assassin known as "Thorn Princess"—and Anya—an esper who can read people's minds—have no plans to disclose their own secrets either. Although this picture-perfect family is founded on deception, the Forgers gradually come to understand that the love they share for one another trumps all else.

Each character shines in their own lane. Loid is cool-headed but soft on the inside. Yor is deadly but adorably awkward. Anya steals the show—her facial expressions and thoughts are gold. The chemistry among the trio is the core charm.

Colorful and clean. The action scenes are sharp when they appear, but the visual highlight is in the comedic timing—especially Anya’s exaggerated reactions. Wit Studio and CloverWorks did a solid job keeping it fluid and expressive.

The OP “Mixed Nuts” is catchy and full of character, while the soundtrack supports both the fun and the tension. Voice acting is on point, especially Anya’s bubbly tone and Yor’s deadpan switch between housewife and killer.

Spy x Family doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It aims for fun, light tension, and wholesome comedy—and it delivers. The balance between chaos and heart is what makes it work, even if the story doesn’t move that fast.

Loid itu tipe cool tapi gampang luluh. Yor manis tapi bisa membunuh. Dan Anya? Anya tuh pusat perhatian—ekspresinya, pikirannya, semuanya lucu banget. Dinamika mereka bertiga jadi alasan utama anime ini seru.

Anime ini sadar banget kalau premisnya gila. Tapi karena dibawain dengan gaya yang “serius tapi lucu”, justru jadi tambah enak ditonton.

Mixed Feelings

A spy, an assassin, and a girl who can read peoples' minds walk into a bar. The result is a somewhat decent sitcom that's fairly funny, as long as you're comparing it to other anime which is grading on an extremely generous curve. There were a few gags that could consistently make me smirk, e.g. the telepath girl's horrified reactions when someone thinks something bad, or her smug face when she comes up with a galaxy-brained plan. But there was certainly still nothing laugh-out-loud funny, and I swear this isn't just me with a stick up my butt. Japanese humor just really doesn't translate well ... at all.

The bigger downside is how corny this show is. It's an anime, so some level of cheesiness is to be expected, and it's a sitcom on top of that, so even more would be expected, but this still takes it up to 11. There's hardly any attempt at all to conceal the plotlines bending over backwards so the show can contort itself into whatever sitcom scenario it wants in any given episode. This corniness nearly pushed me to the breaking point in episode 5, although I eventually decided to stick with the series for at least 12 episodes. I'm not sure I made the right call, because although the rest of what I watched didn't reach that level, it was still a constant feature nevertheless.

It wasn't a total waste of time, but I didn't really want to continue watching after 12 episodes or so.

It is an unfortunate case of mistranslated comedy, reduced to staleness due to lack of variation. The espionage background provides a foundation for creative witticism, but the show isn’t audacious enough to augment its parodic eccentricity to engender guffaws. However, this is not to say that it is entirely unentertaining, as its self-containment can be seen as a merit according to the audience, but its reliance on a fixed set of jokes gets old quickly. Anya and her school plot to get close to the Desmond family aren't appealing to me, as it intrinsically diminishes potential sub-plots concerning Loid and his operations. And this is ... evident as most of the show ends up focusing on Anya, underutilizing the scope of its setting and turning it into a kids show. Production-wise, it definitely appears smooth, but that can be deceiving as there are tons of inconsistencies in the animation, mostly consisting of static frames and inadequate movement extending to the few action sequences. Apart from that, there are some specific instances of bad CGI and 2D-3D animation integration as well. The score manages to be fitting enough, appropriately giving the spy-esque vibe. SPY x FAMILY could've been much worse, though there's no excuse for not expanding its comedic structure; this is mediocrity at full display.
