Spy x Family

Corrupt politicians, frenzied nationalists, and other warmongering forces constantly jeopardize the thin veneer of peace between neighboring countries Ostania and Westalis. In spite of their plots, renowned spy and master of disguise "Twilight" fulfills dangerous missions one after another in the hope that no child will have to experience the horrors of war.

In the bustling Ostanian city of Berlint, Twilight dons the alias of "Loid Forger," an esteemed psychiatrist. However, his true intention is to gather intelligence on prominent politician Donovan Desmond, who only appears rarely in public at his sons' school: the prestigious Eden Academy. Enlisting the help of unmarried city hall clerk Yor Briar to act as his wife and adopting the curious six-year-old orphan Anya as his daughter, Loid enacts his master plan. He will enroll Anya in Eden Academy, where Loid hopes she will excel and give him the opportunity to meet Donovan without arousing suspicion.

Unfortunately for Loid, even a man of his talents has trouble playing the figure of a loving father and husband. And just like Loid is hiding his true identity, Yor—who is an underground assassin known as "Thorn Princess"—and Anya—an esper who can read people's minds—have no plans to disclose their own secrets either. Although this picture-perfect family is founded on deception, the Forgers gradually come to understand that the love they share for one another trumps all else.

I loved Spy x Family. The show does an excellent job of balancing spy thriller suspense, heartfelt family life, and sometimes outright comedy. The plot itself is actually fairly straightforward, with Twilight undertaking the mission to infiltrate the elite school and gain access to a high-level political target. The twist is in how the show combines that with the found-family concept. I liked the constant back and forth of Twilight, juggling spy missions with trying to be a normal father. That dynamic is both humorous and touching, and it propelled me through the story.

The characters are easily the highlight of the show. Twilight is an ... excellent protagonist. He might come across as cold and calculating, but he shows surprising warmth as Loid Forger. Watching him gradually come to care for Anya and Yor was natural and gave the story real heart. Yor is another character that I liked a lot. She's awkward and a bit messy, but she's also very nurturing, especially with Anya. Her dynamic with her little brother gives a nice mix of humor and drama, even if her brother is a bit of a pest. My only complaint is that I wish Yor got more focus, since she has so much potential and at some points the focus lay a little more on Twilight and Anya. And then there's Anya herself, who steals the show. She's adorable, hilarious, and just bursting with personality, her smug expressions and kid-like misunderstandings enhancing nearly every scene. The cast of supporting characters adds even more charm, whether through Franky's comedic relief, Damian's bratty but developing personality, or Becky's over-the-top enthusiasm.

Production-wise, Spy x Family is everything I could have hoped for. The animation is flawless, as one would expect from Wit Studio, and it does a perfect job with both the high-energy action set pieces and low-key family moments. The sound design and soundtrack are a perfect fit for the tone, with an opening and ending that I found myself revisiting after each episode. The voice acting is another huge plus. In Japanese, Anya's acting is simply perfect, bringing out her innocent, playful nature and melodramatic reactions. In the English dub, I thought Yor and Anya stood out in particular, nailing both the comedic timing and dramatic beats. Overall, this is just a really fun show that blends genres together in a way that feels new and exciting. I gave it 8/10 because while it's not perfect, it delivered a blend of humor, action, and heart that entertained me the whole way through, and I'm excited to see where the Forger family goes from here.

Mixed Feelings

A spy, an assassin, and a girl who can read peoples' minds walk into a bar. The result is a somewhat decent sitcom that's fairly funny, as long as you're comparing it to other anime which is grading on an extremely generous curve. There were a few gags that could consistently make me smirk, e.g. the telepath girl's horrified reactions when someone thinks something bad, or her smug face when she comes up with a galaxy-brained plan. But there was certainly still nothing laugh-out-loud funny, and I swear this isn't just me with a stick up my butt. Japanese humor just really doesn't translate well ... at all.

The bigger downside is how corny this show is. It's an anime, so some level of cheesiness is to be expected, and it's a sitcom on top of that, so even more would be expected, but this still takes it up to 11. There's hardly any attempt at all to conceal the plotlines bending over backwards so the show can contort itself into whatever sitcom scenario it wants in any given episode. This corniness nearly pushed me to the breaking point in episode 5, although I eventually decided to stick with the series for at least 12 episodes. I'm not sure I made the right call, because although the rest of what I watched didn't reach that level, it was still a constant feature nevertheless.

It wasn't a total waste of time, but I didn't really want to continue watching after 12 episodes or so.

Spy x Family, or more apt, Reddit: The Anime.

If you want something besides "wholesome Loid x Yor moment", you'll be sorely disappointed. It's just bad gag reels over and over again - once you've read the premise, you've seen the show, because it doesn't grow beyond its core gimmick. The show's terrible writing is apparent early on - Loid is supposed to be a world-class spy, yet still blushes and gets flustered around women. This is, of course, because the anime doesn't want him to lose relatability points - god forbid we alienate the audience in any way.

Besides that, nothing in this anime feels natural. ... Ah yes, the wife happens to be an assassin, and her brother happens to be a secret state agent... it's just a bunch of out-of-place gimmicks interacting with each other - forget character writing or development. The anime also doesn't even contain a modicum of tension, because it devolves into episodic nonsense instead of following a through line. You might enjoy it if you turn your brain off, but have our standards really fallen that low?

All in all, the worst impulses of anime concentrated into one. Don't watch.
